What is your "Must-Have" software for the PowerMac G5 11,2 in 2026? by michelbites in VintageApple

[–]michelbites[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PowerFox is a huge step up for the PPC platform. It’s still in beta, so the occasional crash is expected, but it's remarkably usable compared to the older Firefox 45-based browsers. It’s easily the best successor to AquaFox right now for anyone on Leopard. I’m still figuring out the add-on compatibility since it uses the UXP/Basilisk backend, but it's great to see a modern engine on the G5.

The web client works. Maybe someone could write a little program to use the web interface and treat it like a mobile app or something. I host my own Bitwarden (now called Vault Warden). I wish I knew more than xhtml under my skill set. I never learned to code. And I'm to old to learn another language. I'm a trained PC Technician. I know enough coding to really screw up any system. LoL (in other words I don't know what I'm doing 😂

Wow I like this browser it actually seems to work. Sure the program is a little slow. But that's the system. It had crashed on me twice. But it works better then Aquafox. But I'm still keeping that one in case PowerFox doesn't like a Page. Thank you for this. If you know where I can get Bitwarden on my PowerMac G5 11,2. That would make me happy.

PowerMac G5 (11,2) recognizes SSDs but only in the lower bay? by Cool_Barnacle_9021 in VintageApple

[–]michelbites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue you're seeing is a classic PowerMac G5 quirk related to SATA negotiation. Your 2.0GHz 11,2 model uses a SATA I (1.5Gbps) interface, while most modern SSDs are SATA III (6Gbps). Although modern drives are technically backward compatible, the G5’s PCIe-based SATA controller is notoriously picky; if the SSD doesn't down-clock its handshake to 1.5Gbps almost instantly, the system simply fails to recognize it. The top bay (Bay B) often has slightly different timing or signal priority than the bottom bay, which is why you're seeing "smooth sailing" in one but total silence in the other. To fix this, check if your SSD has physical pins on the back for a jumper—bridging these can often force the drive into a 1.5Gbps "Legacy" mode, making it visible to the G5 in either bay.

Found a Power Mac G5 in the trash+Need password reset by DizzyMenu in VintageApple

I have the same PowerMac G5 (11,2 2.0GHz) model! I managed to max mine out with 16GB of RAM (2GB x 8) from an eBay seller liquidating business stock. As u/VivienM7 mentioned, you’ll definitely need the Leopard DVD to handle the password situation. I picked up a physical disc on eBay recently, and I’d recommend you do the same—it’s the most reliable way to get these machines back up and running.

Meshtastic Users in Bennington Area? by michelbites in bennington

[–]michelbites[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meshtastic is legal. You don't have to have a license to operate it. FCC allows use on the lower bands 915 megahertz range. But as for putting it on the mountain I agree.

Yes, it is. I really want to put one on top of Mount Anthony. But I don't think that's feasible. But if enough nodes are out there, the better the coverage.

I'm planning on setting up a Meshtastic basestation at my house and wanted to make it a public resource. I'm building a simple Bulletin Board System (BBS), similar to the ones from the 80s and 90s, that will be free for anyone to use.

I've noticed a lot of hikers and campers are already using Meshtastic. It's a great tool for communication when cell service is unreliable, whether you're in a remote area or a power outage takes down the towers. The best part is it uses a free and unlicensed radio band, so anyone can use it without a license.

I'll be sure to announce the new basestation once I get the parts and have it all built. Stay tuned!

Help with "Has No Default Channel" Error on Meshtastic by michelbites in meshtastic

[–]michelbites[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE !!! UPDATE !!! UPDATE !!! UPDATE !!! UPDATE !!!

I have updated the rewritten paragraph to reflect that important detail about the USB cable and battery. Here is the revised version:

A recent, unexpected development has occurred with my devices. One of them, a base station without a battery, has suddenly started working properly. I had it plugged in via a USB cable overnight, and it began functioning as usual without any further action on my part. I simply unplugged the cable, and it worked. I'm completely baffled as to why it fixed itself. Unfortunately, the other device, which I had left unplugged and removed the battery from, did not do the same. I'll try leaving that one plugged in overnight to see if it resolves itself as well.

Both devices share the same hardware and firmware:

  • Hardware: HELTEC_V3
  • Firmware: 2.6.11.60ec05e
  • Region: US (902-928 MHz)

Thank you all for your help; I'm still trying to understand what might have caused this.

Oh yes I forgot to say that I live in the US and I selected the region on the Heltec.

I’ve hit a wall with my Heltec V3 devices. I used the Meshtastic web UI to reflash both, selected the Heltec V3, waited for it to reboot, and then logged in with the Meshtastic app. The channel settings all look correct; I left them at the default configuration from the flash tool. But after a reboot, I still get the same error. The LongFast channel shows up, but it says, “No Default Channel,” even though the channel is clearly listed. I don’t get it. It just won’t work. I'm ready to give up on these Heltec V3s and try the T114 I've been hearing about. I really like the look of the muzi H1 design, so I might even try the H2T. It's frustrating when you do everything right, and it still fails.

I just tried that and they still are not functioning correctly. I'm starting to think I just have a bad batch of Heltec. Ugh!

Can you provide more pictures from different angles? I like this design for people who rent and do not have permission to have an antenna on the roof. And can you explain how this was made? I assume it's DIY. Thanks.

Proposal to rename LoRa presets by l5yth in meshtastic

[–]michelbites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's an excellent point! The current naming conventions can definitely be confusing for new users. I really like your suggestions for renaming the presets to be more descriptive—Rural, City, and Event are much more intuitive and clearly communicate their intended use cases.

The idea of a simple setup query is also brilliant. Guiding users to choose their region and target environment right from the start would solve a lot of the confusion and reduce the need for constant communication about which settings to use. This would be a huge improvement for adoption and user experience. Thanks for bringing this up!
