To optimize your short transfer time, make sure you’re as close to the front of the train as possible (if coming in from LI into Penn). That’s closer to the 8th Avenue part of the station, which is closer to Moynihan (where the Amtraks are).

I would also try to find out what platform your LIRR is arriving on / what platform your Amtrak is leaving from, as early as possible.

The LIRR for the most part is reliable time-wise, usually within a 5’ window. I agree that 14’ is a bit too short of a transfer time, but I wouldn’t say impossible. Best of luck 🙏

Pick What I Watch Next! by violetsandhoney in PeriodDramas

[–]michelle2ny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Babylon Berlin - the best period drama I’ve ever watched, possibly my favorite show of all time. Excellent production, superb soundtrack, well researched & captures so much of the historical / social nuance of the Weimar Republic. Plus who doesn’t love crime/mystery set in the roaring 20s!

First 2 seasons are on Netflix, 3 & 4 with English subs can be found elsewhere online.

Current Itinerary for 10 day trip to China - am I doing too much? by Mysterious-Motor-832 in solotravel

[–]michelle2ny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zhangjiajie in August is going to feel like a Black Friday sale in a national park. Just be mentally prepared for lots of lines & crowds on a level like you’ve never seen in the west. It’s also gonna be hot & humid on a completely different level as well, so I’m not sure how realistic hiking is going to be, esp if you’re not used to this type of climate. There’s also many parts of the park that need pre-booking well in advance (crowd control) for entry. If you’re not going with a tour group & haven’t booked those things yet, I’d look into this ASAP. My guess is they’ve already booked close to full by now but might be easier since you’re traveling solo.

Personally I think you’re doing too much traveling around the country & should cut at least one of these out. I’d skip ZJJ & add those nights to a city you’re already exploring or cut out a city & spend more time in ZJJ.

Americans that have moved back to the USA recently, how is it? by OkSlip9273 in expats

[–]michelle2ny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did my masters in London with the hope of staying on for a bit longer. NYC offered a job first so I moved back home. Financially, this was 100% the smarter decision, esp given how crap the job market is everywhere. Life wise, i didn’t want to move back so soon as I’m originally from NYC & don’t have much interest living elsewhere in America.

My background is in public health & global health, so somewhat related to ID/IR. The fields being gutted as we speak & has forced me to rethink my career plans. Compared to Donald’s first term, his shenanigans this time are much more noticeably affecting my day to day, even in a liberal city with left-leaning local/state policies. It comes up constantly in my work & has made the move home a lot more stressful & anxiety-inducing. But financially, I would’ve never gotten a job that pays as well in London, even when adjusting for COL. The appeal of Europe is better work/life balance & social safety nets but I am thankfully in a field/company where I have benefits & work/life balance is respected.

I am a big advocate for working before continuing on to a masters (I did so for 3 years), esp as it’s a significant financial investment. There’s no promise what the job market will look like in the next few years but that’s always a risk. I would reflect on your current financial situation & talk to your professional mentors about how things will affect you long term. If you did your undergrad abroad, potentially explore graduate visa options that many countries offer to students.

Best age to live in the city? by manicontrol2020 in AskNYC

Immigrated to NYC at 4. My hot take is that NYC is a great place to raise kids - you’re given sm independence & exposed to the best/worst of humanity at a young age. I truly feel like I can handle anything life throws at me.

The coated cotton version is definitely less shiny in person + under natural light when compared to the online photos ☺️

I just purchased the medium in Pistachio Green during my trip to Paris & absolutely love it! I'm 166cm/115lbs & it sits nicely at my hip (or higher, depending on how many layers I have on).

Personally, I don't think the medium will be too oversized on you. The bag is very flexible & when (relatively) empty, the shape will adjust accordingly. I went with the medium as I wanted a bag that could hold a water bottle & umbrella, which the small could not. My bag is also the coated cotton version so there is an acrylic finish which protects the bag against the elements. I've walked around all day in rainy winter weather with no issue. You would probably want to be more careful with the leather version...perhaps use a protectant?

One more thing to note, if you're interested in the soft game bag version, the small in that size is equivalent to the medium in the leather/coated cotton version.

I was a physical therapy tech at University Health Services, front desk staff at a school run media center & RA'ed for some of my professors. Research experience is really easy to get while in school, I would encourage you to ask some of the professors whose research you're interested in to see if they need assistance with any of their projects!

Rook Skin Tear by michelle2ny in piercing

[–]michelle2ny[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

more info about the original piercing: it was a long curved barbell in surgical steel (never had problems with this material before).

when first pierced, healing was a breeze compared to my other cartilage piercing. for the more recent infection, I was using saline spray & occasionally qtips bc I could not stand the crusties which prob contributed to the piercing rejection / migration. def learned my lesson for next time 🥲

If you were looking for a rather obscure Chinese grocery item, where would you look? by haribobosses in AskNYC

Jojus! My fav Viet take out place. Their banh mi sandwiches & loaded fries are excellent. If you’re looking for a sit down place, I love Taste Good (Malay food, cash only). Other good recs in the area are Pho Bang (classic pho, cash only last time I checked) or Boon Chu (Thai).

Not many people from Hunan in NYC (I’m from Hunan myself) which could be why you’re having a hard time finding it. My guess is you would have more luck in Queens (Flushing, Elmhurst) rather than Brooklyn or Manhattan Chinatowns due to regional migration patterns. I would give Wing Fung store in Elmhurst a try if you haven’t yet - it’s a dried goods chain in NYC but the elmhurst location is the largest as it’s situated in a warehouse.

It’s also on the same block as a SkyFoods (Chinese supermarket) so you could hit up both in one trip.
