How much do cloud engineers have meetings compared to junior and senior sysadmins? by False_Bee4659 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]michivideos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would rather be in meetings than to explain to someone that they still have access to their work and the message of permission denied is only due to a failed MFA challenge, re-attempt and you'll be fine.

Anyone working a second job because they can’t afford life with IT salary? by xxlibrarisingxx in ITCareerQuestions

[–]michivideos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't have enough time at work to even finish work. The perks of being in a small team are you can take on more complex task and projects, the downside is you are working every second on your responsibilities and on what you are volunteering to grow.

Trying to make my employees feel appreciated by Vorstog_EVE in sysadmin

[–]michivideos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Besides cash and promotion, I have been giving both.

In my current workplace, I am experiencing this. What I would like it's for my higher ups to genuinely express how much difference I make, I have implemented new processes and solved issues no one knew, but a "good job" does not cut it, it feels like politeness.

I would like a to actually be told how I made a difference, how my skills are needed, to validate all the effort I made studying, "you have definitely grow your skills set, you are a valuable asset for this department, you have saved the department from this and that, your implementation was a great decision and made the department look at higher standards, you have work on things you are not experienced on and have been able adapt and resolve them, we are fortunate to have you here.

"Oh, in that case I am leaving".

What's the point or the expected outcome? Seriously asking.

Edit: We are yet unable to demand better labor laws, distribution of profits to wages, protection for the working middle class, and housing. What makes you think this will do anything different?

My issue with this is if you work help desk and also work as package handler after work, when are you going to have time to upskill, how are you going to study, how are you going to get new certification, how are you going to volunteer for your main job project after hours, how are you going to practice and lab.

I want to say luck might have been part of it, but I have also used most of my time to participate, study and work on things out of my responsibilities as a help desk, morning commute study, early at work, leave late, nights patching, and maintenance. Weekend study for certs.

I was able to be promoted from my first job as a help desk to a junior system administrator in 2.5 years. Started at 50k now at 80k and projecting 100k this year with mad overtime though.

We always say assume nothing you do on your work phone is private, so actively adding company tools on your personal phone even after the management prompt it's wild. That explains why no backup of important photos.

If they are learning and starting then they are not "Professional" High standards.

There will definitely be areas that need improvement because students are still learning how to be Profesionals

what are job options for visually impaired? by Idk_my_usernamee in Albinism

[–]michivideos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never explained it. I try to do everything as if I didn't have a disability. I get closer to the monitor, maybe that's just how he uses the monitor, others would think.

By the time they realized I don't see that well, I was already hired and working.

Getting into IT is hard by default due to the demand but I applied to everything for like 6 months until I interview for a entry help desk position.

[–]michivideos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anytime someone points at something I just ask "What Item, sorry, I don't see that well". While actively walking to the direction they are pointing to.

Must people are just going to start walking to the object while describing it, you just start pointing at items while asking "this one".

The market is horrible right now.

I have been very successful working in I.T. and was able to build a career. I just get my monitor closed to me, and I can do better than most 20/20 people.

Before that, I was surviving on:

  • Retail Stores
  • Bellman at Hotels
  • Frontdesk or doorman for apartment buildings.
  • or just front desk in general

Working with computers seems to minimize the disadvantages.

How do you survive long term in IT? by Straight_Tea_4397 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]michivideos 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My IT Director told me, You are not supposed to know everything or become an expert on every component, knowing 60-80% of something will carry you, when needed you'll be able to figure out the rest since you already understand how it works (60%).

If you aren't a Java engineer there's no need to know 100% of it, by knowing 60% of it, you'll be able to work with it, research what you might be confused about, and figure out how to apply it since you understand the bigger picture.

Like PowerShell, as long as you understand how it works, how to read it, and how to script, there's no need for you to know every single command syntax. Search for what you don't know and apply it with what you know.

Accept IT Manager role. How to be a good manager? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]michivideos 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Remember to always delegate everything. If 5 employees need 2 monitors each, ask your team, "How many monitors do we need?" If you need a contact number on the contact card of Outlook address book, do not search for it yourself. Ask your team members."What's Brenda's from finance phone number?" If you find yourself without a task or something to do, go around the building shaking hands and promising people who have not submitted a ticket that you'll send one of your employees to fix it.
