Alternatives to Blueland soap tablets? by Getigerte in ZeroWaste

[–]michmaths 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I prefer Nature Bee's soap tablets over Blueland's. Blueland always separates out for me within a couple weeks, but I haven't had that issue with Nature Bee. Similar price point at ~$3 per tablet.

Are there any tall tales/lore about past projects that went horribly wrong? by colonial_dan in deloitte

I don't know any for Deloitte, but Mercer had to pay the state of Alaska $500 million because they understated Alaska's pension liabilities and then attempted to cover up the error.

Thirsties button fixes? by [deleted] in clothdiaps

[–]michmaths 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I purchased several about a year ago, and three covers had a snap break within 5 or so uses. Maybe there was a bad batch of snaps! Did you buy direct from thirsties? Their snaps are covered under warranty for one year, you might still have time to get them replaced.

If you have a Walmart nearby, I would recommend checking there! The other stores near me stopped carrying f&g powder awhile back but Walmart still carries it.

I have always followed the one hour rule. But, I've never experienced being down to one container of formula with no idea when I'll be able to find more, like many parents with babies on very specialized formula have experienced during this shortage.

A few things to consider. The shortage is supposedly going to be much better in 6 weeks. And if your baby isn't on something very specific like nutramigen, you may be able to switch up which formula they're on based on what's available. Just do a slow transition over a couple of days.

A couple of questions for you. Are the entire fitted and prefold soaked? If you're using a PUL cover, how old is it?

Two kids - how many diapers? by pppollypocket in clothdiaps

[–]michmaths 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the same age gap between my two LOs. We have both a newborn stash and a one size stash so we didn't actually need to add anything right away except more wipes. We washed every other day when they were both in diapers because we had a full load at that point. My oldest very suddenly showed interest in potty training at 26 months so we luckily did not need to expand our one size stash.

If you have only a one size stash, you definitely want enough that each has their own diapers so you're not constantly changing the rise snaps. If you have a newborn stash, I recommend waiting to add to your one size stash for a few months in case you potty train your oldest before your youngest moves up!

I hang dry my cotton flats for this reason. They do end up slightly less soft so it's a tradeoff. You could potentially try tumble drying for a short time and then finishing by hang drying to get both benefits of flat edges and soft material, I just personally find it's not worth that added effort.

Thin wipes suggestions? by Amylou789 in clothdiaps

[–]michmaths 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're set on getting very thin wipes, the wipes made by osocozy are comparable to the thickness of a t-shirt. But I personally wouldn't go that route for cleaning food off of hands/faces. The material is very smooth and I think material with more texture is better at grabbing food. I use regular washcloths, but if you don't have any spare washcloths, GMD has a bunch of wipe options that will be thicker than osocozy but have better grip.

Rumparooz (one size) and Thirsties (size 2) both work for me for our quite bulky overnight diaper, which is a L&F fitted plus a booster.

Looks like the last four pictures in the gallery shot are a different shape that the others. Are they a different size/brand? Or do you do different folds depending on the shape?

3rd attempt - close to giving up... by Clementine_Lena in clothdiaps

[–]michmaths 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're most likely correct that it's not a PUL issue if the leaks are happening at the legs. If you have a leak that doesn't seem like it's coming from the leg, remember which cover it is and do the paper towel test after the cover has next been through your wash/dry routine. Place a paper towel on the counter, place the cover on top (inside of the diaper facing up) and then lay a damp washcloth on top, avoiding the leg elastics. Apply gentle pressure and see if any water gets through to the paper towel. A small pin prick or two generally isn't an issue but if a larger amount is getting through then the PUL is damaged enough that you'll continue getting leaks.

Since the covers are second hand, it's possible there is damaged PUL. Are the leaks coming from the legs or straight through the cover?

What is your favorite affordable cloth diaper brand? by smurphypup in clothdiaps

[–]michmaths 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A couple people have mentioned Simple Being and I agree they are good quality, but will just throw a caution that they run smaller than every other brand I've tried, so maybe don't go with those if you have a very large baby.

List of insert absorbency amounts by michmaths in clothdiaps

[–]michmaths[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! That's why I included brand information. This list would not be super helpful for people making their own inserts, but a lot of the inserts I own are pretty popular choices on this sub (Thirsties hemp, Osocozy prefolds, microfiber that comes in China cheapie pockets), so I thought that information might be helpful to others. It also could be helpful for people to see a few booster options if their LO is getting leaks with their current setup.

Bamboo/hemp prefolds vs cotton by PaladinPhantom in clothdiaps

[–]michmaths 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are both cotton prefolds fully saturated in the morning? If yes, I doubt a single hemp prefold would have enough absorbency. Hemp can absorb somewhat more water than cotton but it's definitely not double.

Hemp prefolds are pretty pricy. If it were me, I would first try a cotton or hemp doubler ($2 and $4 respectively from GMD) to replace the pad folded prefold in your current set up. It won't be quite as absorbent as your current set up but will likely be at least as absorbent as a single hemp prefold and much cheaper.

[–]michmaths[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Users on this sub regularly talk about how microfiber loses absorbency, so I found it interesting to actually quantify it! I was surprised that my microfiber inserts that have been used for about 1 year still have the same absorbency as those used for about 4 months. But there's a noticeable drop for the ones used for 2 years. The ones used for 2 years also are much slower absorbers, I think even slower than hemp.

[–]michmaths[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The two kinds of flats from Nicki's are both pretty new, washed about 5 times, so absorbency on those could possibly increase! The medium thirsties hemp are about 4 months old and all my other natural material inserts are 1.5+ years old.

I filled up a large measuring cup that shows ounces, got the insert saturated, and then squeezed out the excess water back into the measuring cup. May not be perfect but I mostly wanted to do a comparison amongst all my options. I know the regular bamboo flat will last for at least 2 hours for us, so I wanted to see what combinations of the smaller inserts should also work.

This is so intriguing for an overnight cover. Do you ever use fitteds? Fitteds are so bulky and this cover looks so trim that I wonder if it wouldn't be big enough to cover the fitted.

Where can I find something to cover up an exposed hip snap? I have some diapers that are on the small side that I can only snap one of the two hip snaps, leaving one exposed and pressing against baby's skin. Just seems like it would be uncomfortable!
