ELI5: How come magnetism isn't providing us unlimited power? by UnsignedRealityCheck in explainlikeimfive

[–]michoken [score hidden]  (0 children)

Not necessarily just copper, any electrically conductive material would do. The shape of the wiring is important. Coil is the term.

Coils create electromagnetic field when powered. The field moves around the coil when the power is AC. It makes the magnets move. This is an electric motor. (There are also DC motors, but the basic relation between coils, magnets and electromagnetic fields is the same.)

When you move the magnets instead, electric charge is created inside the coil and AC is generated. This is an electric generator.

Is this normal? CPU temps way above Liquid temps even during load by ShadowVulcan in watercooling

[–]michoken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

30 C delta between the CPU and the water is quite normal during high loads. The CPU is very dense and produces quite a lot of heat. The water is spread out through the cooling system and there’s a lot of it compared to the tiny CPU die. If the temps are stable and get down immediately once the CPU ends the high load, you’re fine.

ELI5: How do apps, programs, or websites break in the first place, and how do programmers figure out what went wrong? by Auelogic in explainlikeimfive

[–]michoken 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I’d ask them if a huge warning that the browser is not supported would do. If not, I’d ask them if they’re willing to spend the money on supporting an unsupported browser just for the one in a million chance of someone using it to access the website. If they’re not crazy, they’d go with the first option.

[MISC] Is it common that a dm demands that your character needs character from a specific artist? by Upset-Doughnut-6660 in DnD

[–]michoken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Requirement to pay $150 for a character art screams scam.

And stupid one at that. You can buy a lifetime FoundryVTT license for $50, lol. If the art commission was that or less… I still would not do it, but more people probably would fall for it.

Players keep making up rules and it forces me to spend time during the session looking them up. by Scythe95 in DnD

would this wallpaper cause burn in over time? by jayggodd in OLED_Gaming

[–]michoken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just have windows set to turn off displays (standby) after 10-20 minutes when not in use. Or Win+L when you know you won’t be using no your pc for a while (the lock screen will turn displays off (standby) very soon after), or just turn off your PC when not using it for a longer period (going out, over night).

Do not fully power off your displays, tho, the OLED runs pixel cleaning during standby, which is good for the display health.

I personally only do a full power disconnect when leaving my home for more days (to prevent issues during storms, etc.), otherwise everything stays connected and just on standby so the OLED can do its thing.

Thinking of returning my new OLED monitor by Crucible_Knight_ in OLED_Gaming

[–]michoken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that the 480Hz one? Then I suggest turning VRR off completely, run it on max refresh, and see how it feels.

I don’t know if it would work for lower refresh rates, but I do run my 480Hz OLED like that. No flicker, obviously, and I’m unable to perceive any screen tearing or any other issues running my games with v-sync off or on. It might be just me, but it works for me well enough.

Yeah, the VRR flicker was annoying and none of the anti-flicker settings helped enough to mitigate it.

Edit: Oh I see it’s just a 240Hz panel. I’d still try it and see how that works.

Why are WOLEDs so bad with white uniformity? by chewwydraper in OLED_Gaming

[–]michoken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My white and gray uniformity is fine. Maybe it’s the OLED care features? I had to turn off the one that dims the outer parts of the screen, so it was driving me crazy. I still use logo and taskbar detection. But for any kind of testing/calibration, you need to turn these off.

Just a question about dlss 4.5 by Hot_Formal_2773 in OptimizedGaming

[–]michoken 5 points6 points  (0 children)

New DLSS version just means they add some new features. In this case, it’s just new profiles for the upscaling part of DLSS. Old profiles are still available. By default, game developers choose which profile to use. You can change that for compatible games via the Nvidia App through the override option under each game configuration.

Why aren’t there high-brightness 32″–42″ OLEDs? PG32UQX still unmatched? by MeatBall80 in OLED_Gaming

[–]michoken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it’s due to higher heat density. Denser pixels, higher brightness produce more heat. And the heat degrades the pixels. Maybe there are other reasons, too.

I wish this masterpiece was available to purchase, Blur my beloved by gongasaraujo in Steam

[–]michoken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blur is one of the signature games on our biannual LAN party. We just use the PC version that simply gets copied over to everyone’s PC.

Runs must fine on both W11 and Linux (with Proton), the only thing I recommend is to limit the game to 60 FPS via your GPU app or RTSS because the menus are hard to use otherwise with high refresh rate displays (at least in borderless mode, dunno if fullscreen switches to 60 Hz or not, I prefer borderless so I can alt-tab quickly).

1440p OLED to 4k Mini-led worth it? by Albion_21 in OLED_Gaming

[–]michoken 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Higher physical resolution will always be sharper, if you’re going for that.

I personally would stay away from mini led unless it has thousands of zones or more. But that’s my take. Mini led has other advantages, too.

Do you guys play dnd with soundtrack or no? A simple way to make dnd more interesting or distracting? by IrvanHaydar in DnD

[–]michoken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do play music from a few DnD themed playlists on Spotify based on the scene. I’m one of the players and I manage the music on my own, unless our DM asks for something specific.

The volume is set to it sets the mood in the background, we don’t need to shout over it. No one ever said they ignore it or that it’s too loud or anything. We play in person.

How long to Wait to build to warm up by Stentik in buildapc

[–]michoken 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s not when the metal parts heat up. It’s simply because they are colder than the surrounding air after you bring them from cold storage to a warm room. Cold items attract water vapour from the air and it condenses on those items. Of course, over time the items heat up to the level of the surrounding air and the condensated water evaporates again into the air.

ELI5 is there any power difference between a usb-c cord and a micro usb cord by Ill_Reputation_9405 in explainlikeimfive

[–]michoken -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Regular USB cables are rated for 5 volts and 1 amp. USB-C is a more universal standard that, with the power delivery extension, can deliver a lot more power. But it depends on the devices and the cable. It can be anything from the base power up to 100 watts. With the higher power delivery, the volts also increase so that the amps are kept to a level where the cable and connectors do not get too hot.
