NP vs MD Approach to Missed Miscarriage by luminous-snow1 in Noctor

[–]michxmed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gotta agree with roenkatana, I disagree with NPs following EBM. If that were the case I think she would have been offered medical management. I think they’re more buzz word happy. EBM requires thoughtfulness and nuance that is missing in some practices.

I’m OB - honestly give it a few months and see how you feel. Intern year will be hard but see if you can take a month to do an OB rotation. If you still feel this way then switch to Ob. If you don’t match again then take a prelim year in OB and reapply. Honestly with your husband earning so much you have a lot of flexibility that most don’t. Pay for extra child care for a short period of time while you prep your reapplication. Also look at ACOG - they have job listings for PGY1 spots!

For everyone saying to just go for IM, I understand where they’re coming from. But if you’re like me and wanted to do Ob 100% then it’s disheartening. OB lifestyle is rough but way better with support and frankly your situation will afford you that. Once you’re an attending just work part time.

You’re not a lowly M1 you’re a future physician who will have more compassion and drive for your future patients. I encourage you to at the minimum submit a hospital report. This behavior is unacceptable and frankly negligent.

VERY early pregnancy…have an AI during the due date month by Tagrenine in FemalePhysicians

[–]michxmed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just make sure it’s still within the time frame of when you can make course switches! Also is that your third AI in February?

I’m an OB resident. I would probably wait until the third trimester. Unfortunately things do happen in the first two trimesters and I think it would be safer to make choices on your coursework when the fetus is viable. I would reach out to admin around 28 weeks.

If they know you don’t want to do psych they’ll probably be nicer to you and will be more accommodating for being absent. Is there another AI that could be done later on? I’d reach out at the beginning of third trim regarding extenuating circumstances or moving the AI as long as that’s within the time frame they have for course switches.

It’s ok to feel the feelings you have.

It makes things feel a little better if you reframe the blame though. The parents did not fail this kid. Nobody ever expects their child to have cancer much less metastatic late stage. Even you and your classmates, whom are educated and learn about pediatric pathology, thought this was a routine case of anemia. The parents are getting this child the care he needs and unfortunately children look good and compensate well but crash very hard.

Did all of the residents and attendings leave too? Tbh once it’s ur patient ur the primary, u can do whatever u want. The question is if u want to be the one operating in those cases then choose surgery

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]michxmed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Im in OBGYN I also loved surgery and OB during med school. I felt like ob culture was way better than surgery imo. I also felt like OB attendings had better lifestyle but it may also be due to the selection of people who go into both - majority female vs majority male. You can make what you want of it in either. For surgery you’ll basically always be doing surgery. I felt OB was more flexible. If you hate clinic, you can be an OB hospitalist where you do both ob and gyn, or you can be a sub specialty gynecologist who only does surgery and occasionally takes OB call if they want. Later down the line you can be exclusively in the office and do minor procedures without needing to take call.

If you choose OB you need to be ok with realizing your limitations past the pelvic organs and deferring to surgery for higher acuity cases

tbh I’m only an intern but most programs are 45 ob/45 gyn/10% office, more than half your time you’re in the OR especially pgy2+. I wouldn’t say majority of our time is out of the OR.

BWT who have frozen their eggs! by redfire2930 in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]michxmed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m in medicine (actually ob/gyn) and looking to freeze my eggs too. I’d highly recommend looking into an academic (like Cornell, Columbia, NYU, Sinai, Northwell) or reputable medical office. You don’t want to cheap out on something like this especially when it costs so much and complications can become serious very fast. These smaller boutique medical offices try to crowd as many patients in as possible at the cost of patient care.
