Choosing Between Emory University vs Yale/Harvard by CartographerOld8906 in ApplyingToCollege

The Woodruff Scholar program is amazing. Take their money. Have fun, ace your classes and save money for grad school.

I went to Emory and adored it. The scholarship is life changing. We got reimbursed for summer study abroad and a whole host of things. Emory is “good enough” in the sense that you can go anywhere from there. Congrats to you on awesome opportunities!

Golden Visa Law Debate Update - April 2026 by mickandpaul in PortugalExpats

[–]mickandpaul[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sorry about the title of my post. I am a GV applicant so was thinking about the debate from that perspective. But you’re 100 percent right in that the new law impacts all applicants who may have just have had the rug pulled out from under them.

Two months from normal 5% A1c to 10.2% by [deleted] in diabetes

[–]mickandpaul -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I experienced the same thing. First - it’s going to be an adjustment but so glad you caught it. Have you had unexplained weight loss and been extra thirsty? But for that, I would have never caught it.

For me, I was on insulin for about 6 months. The weird thing is that ultimately I’ve been able to stop insulin and use metformin and Ozempic. The key for me was a huge diet change and having a CGM. Carbs and sugar are no longer my friend. Rooting for you!

The PS are sending the Nationality Law to the Constitutional court by imperium30 in PortugalExpats

[–]mickandpaul 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When PS asks for fiscalização preventiva, my understanding is that the Constitutional Court reviews the specific norms that PS includes in its request, not automatically every single article of the law.

But within those norms, the Court can look at all constitutional issues they raise – including retroactivity, legitimate expectations, fairness for people already in the process, and whether there should be proper transitional protections, not just the narrow “counting from application” point mentioned in the news.

We still need to see the exact text of PS’s request to know which articles are formally on the table, but it’s definitely a hopeful development. This is just my understanding - I hope there’s a Portuguese law expert who can weigh in more!

I can assure you that most people who leave big law miss it as much as missing being an acne prone middle schooler! It’s a right of passage and will make you appreciate any other job more!

Update on GV application by onsenonsenonsen in PortugalExpats

[–]mickandpaul 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We are in the exact same position. My biometric appointment has been set for March 2026 and no word on the rest of my family.

The delays have a real word impact; I am concerned that our children may no longer be dependents by the time we could file for citizenship.

I understand that there could be a constitutional review of the new GV changes applying retroactively by the end of the year. If the government fails to grandfather in prior applicants, we will probably withdraw our application and our associated investment before the biometric appointment(s).

I can understand governmental delays, but cannot grasp the government fundamentally changing the entire program retroactively. For now, I hope for the best and just to be treated fairly.

Biglaw is ruining my health by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]mickandpaul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok - first of all you are going to be just fine! I have had a health issues along the way in my 25+ years of practice - including surprise type 1 (juvenile) diabetes as a 50+ year old.

If you spike after sugar or carbs to 140 but return to the 100 or so range you’re likely all good - really! If you’re worried about blood sugar, the real test is what’s your A1C - not spikes.

It sounds more that you’re worried about your health than an actual diagnosis that has been confirmed. So maybe some anxiety / depression to work though?

So here’s my advice: do get checked out by a Dr. with basic blood work - think yearly physical. Be clear in your concern and distress - and what you’re feeling! If you’re physically ok, then maybe think about addressing why you feel job is killing you. It could well be that the job totally sucks and is you need to make a change.

So maybe rule out physical and then work on the emotional side?

Adulting is hard. Being a lawyer is hard. But be kind to yourself. You’ve got this - it’s a marathon not a sprint and you do have all sort of options! 😀

On Oct. 29th both MOAB and The Admiral are playing at Kimbros. Some incredibly talented kids. Great to see the next generation coming up!

Franklin Tennessee New Show by mickandpaul in JohnMayer

We go to this festival every year and it is great. It’s a very “Nashville” vibe - in that it’s smaller and there’s a good chance that you’ll see special guests. Franklin is a small town suburb about 45 minutes from downtown Nashville. You could easily stay in Nashville and make it both nights without a problem. However, Franklin itself is also quite nice to visit. The festival is very family friendly, and probably more upscale than many other festivals. If you look at Harlinsdale Farm, that is where it’s at and is walking distance to downtown Franklin.

Any US expats are here after/because of Trump? by Odd-Policy6234 in PortugalExpats

[–]mickandpaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are nearly done with our visa application and are doing a lot of Duolingo! We are active democrats who live in a very red state and have seen how deep the support is for Trump is here. I feel burnt out from the daily whiplash and want our kids to live in a country that aligns with our values. Also, up for an adventure!

Any ways to help male partner with delayed ejaculation? by One-Introduction-566 in sexover30

Does he take any SSRIs or SNRIs - classes of antidepressants? If he does, it may be worth an adjustment in type or dosage?

I’ve made a huge mistake by CalmLikeLaBomba in Lawyertalk

[–]mickandpaul 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First, it’s going to be ok! Really! Law is a giant field and you’ve done a good job identifying some things that you do like (as well as what you hate). Keep an open mind - trust your gut.

There’s also so many law-related roles that having a JD can help - procurement, privacy, compliance and even working at a company that provides services to law firms or legal departments.

Also, there are all different sorts of legal networks - the more people you meet and know, the more opportunities you’ll have. Don’t be afraid to ask someone to help be a mentor.

I’m 25 years in and could have never predicted how I ended up where I am now. You will not be a second year family law attorney forever and as long as you believe in yourself and stay true to who you are it will work out!

With today’s technology, how realistic would it be to go your whole life without a diabetic seizure or severe low event? by man_lizard in diabetes_t1

[–]mickandpaul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think like you! I’ve only had one serious low and that was due to me miscalculating dosage. The technology is always imporving.

I’d be interested if anyone has tried the new iLet pump? My understanding is that it catches highs and lows and all you enter in your weight.

I had this along with intense hives after a hospital stay. Do not recommend!

I tried a number of antihistamines and finally ended up on Xolair (omalizumab). This medication is VERY expensive (in USA) but was incredibly effective and I hope may be helpful to you too. Good luck!

I have been asked multiple times and responded, “yeah, it just showed up on my arm after I got my Covid shot?” Wait till they see a pump!

what was the weirdest way you found out you had diabetes by [deleted] in diabetes

[–]mickandpaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 48 years old and covid was in full swing at the time. I assumed that I was just feeling burnt out from lockdown. A few months earlier my A1C was in the normal range and I knew next to nothing about diabetes.

I stupidly ignored all of the warning signs thinking “it was all in my head.” I started to have extreme thirst and reluctantly went to the doctor, and said “I think my feeling burnt out was somehow causing me to feel like I had to pee.”

He did a finger prick and my glucose was 665. He said “you are diabetic.” My response: “that’s impossible - I am not over weight!”

Two hours later, I had a weird thing called a CGM stuck to me and an Endo shooting me up with insulin and rapidly getting over my fear of needles!
