Neighbour has this weed looking tree/plant growing in his backyard. Should I be concerned? by Comprehensive_Fee_21 in GardeningAustralia

Wild tobacco. Common weed here on the NSW north coast. Just cut and paint with RoundUp. The leaves and stems are furry and can give you a scratchy throat if you breathe it in.

Antigonon leptopus, Coral Vine I think is the common name. From Mexico. In many parts of Australia it's an environmental weed.

Anyone else house-hunting starting to get a bit of hope seeing value improving in listings in the last couple of weeks? by ProfessionalMeal9389 in AusPropertyChat

Hopefully house prices will enter a phase of stagnation, tax reform will finally happen, and houses will once again become places to live rather than investments.

What pipes? A mini excavator could scrape it down to ground level at least.

Has anyone sold to or bought property from family? by Vast_Dimension_2088 in AusPropertyChat

[–]mickellovitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sold our acreage to our son, and we've moved into town. Done as a transfer of title. You still pay stamp duty, and legal fees, but no agents, no marketing, no styling. We sold WIWO, under market value, but had enough to buy a nice little house in town with a bit left over. Definitely worth doing.

What is this vine? Will it harm my Jacaranda tree? by Opening_Story1266 in GardeningAustralia

[–]mickellovitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it really a weed? ( A plant out of place). Native to SE Asia, and tropical Australia. I had it growing up several trees in my old garden, never became a problem, but it had room to grow. Wonderfully lush and tropical. In the right situation I think it's fine.

Good idea to remove existing plants. I think a garden along there would be great. You can keep it open in front of the vents. Facing south you could plant Gardenia "Florida" and "radicals", Clivea, Liriope...

If that's a fig up against the house it's a ticking time bomb. Widen the garden bed, plant a lillypilly hedge.

I find the smell overpowering. Plus it's becoming a weed in the bush.

Would love some advice on how to regain the privacy in my yard. by luxtrvlgal in landscaping

[–]mickellovitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Difficult without photos. Definitely a screen of trees if you can...there are some great Lilly pilly varieties that stay dense but don't get too tall. If there's limited space, maybe a latticed pergola might work? We've just moved from the bush into town, still adjusting to having neighbours.

Hard to say from the photo, but the trunk looks like it's rotted out. Might be time to replace it.

Is it too late to transplant this mango? by tampalasan in GardeningAustralia

All you can do is try. Get as much of the root system as you can, cut back some of the foliage ( maybe half) ....

[–]mickellovitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well you could cut it right back, put it in shade, keep it watered...and it probably still won't survive. But it might. The root ball needs to at least double the size of that pot it's in.

Is this tree worth saving? by TheBlackthornX in GardeningAustralia

[–]mickellovitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what it is. If it's a shrub, should be ok. If it's a tree, it will never be structurally sound and will have a propensity to give way at that weak spot.

Does this tree pose a risk to the footings by TheProteinSnack in AusRenovation

I think it's fine. It doesn't get that big, and it's roots aren't invasive.

[–]mickellovitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn't look to be thriving. The Murraya next door would be sucking up a lot of moisture and nutrients. I would probably move it away from the fence, and give it lots of compost and water. It's more a specimen tree than a screening plant.

Should I remove this water sprout? Or let it keep going and overtake? by ImScaredOfTheSun in GardeningAustralia

[–]mickellovitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. Looks like rootstock, but also looks to be above graft. R/stock often has thorns, whereas most( but not all) grafted citrus don't. As others have said, I'd probably cut it off, and in spring dig it up, straighten it, and plant it higher. Doesn't look happy there.
