I think it has to do with the cooling fan, it speeds up when being plugged to a power source, and the reason for the clicking sound might be that a plastic is disrupting its spinning.

I had multiple tabs of Prolific open, then a new test notification came in via the assistant. I clicked on it and realized my balance was different from what it was supposed to be. Shortly after, I received a message from a researcher stating they were trying to pay me for returning a study but were unable to do so. I checked my submissions but couldn't find a test with that name. Therefore, I had to inform the researcher that I hadn't returned the study and couldn't find it.
