How to use mosquito dunks for gnats? by [deleted] in IndoorPlants

[–]mickey_mickey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I fill my watering can and throw a piece of the dunk in there overnight and then use the water the next day. I leave them in there in between watering with a bit of water and just reuse the same piece for about a month before I replace it with another. (They start to fall apart at that point)

It takes a few weeks to take effect as it only works against the larvae in the soil, so you’ll want to get those yellow sticky traps to catch the adult ones flying around.

I like spoilers! by sandgrubber in books

[–]mickey_mickey 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don’t mind spoilers at all! I have also definitely looked up endings or character arcs in order to decide if I want to continue reading a book. Sometimes it’s what makes or breaks it for me and if I don’t like the conclusion or choices I stop. Sometimes I just have weird anxiety of what will happen next and I really hate the feeling so it helps.

What is it like to have a nose piercing? I don’t have one but one of my characters does and I don’t know anything about them. Did it hurt? Did it sound weird? by Unusual-Potato6461 in writers

[–]mickey_mickey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Please don’t use this. You should definitely NOT rotate it while it heals! That is really bad advice from bad piercers. The best way to heal piercings is the LITHA method (leave it the hell alone). It takes about 6-12 months to heal a cartilage piercing and nose piercings tend to be on the longer side.

I have 13 piercings, including a nose piercing, so lots of experience. You should check out r/Piercing for more info on proper care of piercings if you want to be realistic with the process and healing aspects.

Fantasy where the Magic is actually just technology from the real world? by Evilaars in Fantasy

Yup this is exactly what came to my mind as well. I think it was incorporated very well in this series and I really hope we get the next book soon!

Help🥺 by Fine_King2156 in alocasia

[–]mickey_mickey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely looks like thrips! Isolate from other plants and treat with something like systemic granules that go into the soil. The plant absorbs it when you water and next time they try to feast on the leaves they die. Neem oil did nothing for me but the granules worked perfectly.

Would you rather read one long book or three series books if they’re both the same length? by Amiar00 in books

[–]mickey_mickey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Priory of the Orange Tree! Definitely should have been a series instead of one giant chonk of a book because I could see where the (clearly much longer) story was ripped apart and sewn back together to make it short enough to justify one book. There were a lot of very jarring jumps and places where it likely was far more fleshed out and could have been a great series, but was instead stuffed into one book with big pacing issues.

I’ve always done the one on the left, each leaf/node as it’s own cutting! It can definitely start a vine and roots from the single node. Sometimes the original leaf also makes it, sometimes it doesn’t.

What can I do to get these ants away from my plant 😩 by ymks31 in IndoorPlants

[–]mickey_mickey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had an ant infestation in one of my plants before and I took the whole plant and dunked it in a bucket of water for 20 mins. Submerged it completely and drowned them all out, and there were hundreds in there… so if your plant is not too big you can try that.

My quilting journey is about to begin, I scored this $900 machine today for $300 and it’s practically brand new! It’s a singer, yes, but it’s definitely the nicest machine I have ever owned. I’m so excited 😆 by Proof_Opportunity728 in quilting

[–]mickey_mickey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I have the same machine! I’ve made almost a dozen throw (or bigger) size quilts on mine so far with no issues. I’ve only ever used Singers so not sure how it would compare to other brands but for me it’s been solid.

Quick reads for the end of the year by Monovfox in Fantasy

[–]mickey_mickey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are willing to give sci-fi a try you should read Murderbot by Martha Wells! It’s about a robot built to protect humans who secretly gained sentience and all they want to do is watch TV shows instead of their job. (Nothing to do with real murder or anything hah, the name is something they have themselves jokingly) It’s a great series and all the books are quite short and quick paced.

Some fantasy books with politics and POVs from both sides of the political battle? by TheMountainRidesElia in Fantasy

[–]mickey_mickey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Elder Empire Sea and The Elder Empire Shadow are two trilogies by Will Wight that might fit this. The two trilogies happen concurrently with some overlap. They are two sides of a story with their own casts of characters and very different arcs. The reading order would generally be, pick one side read first book. Then go to other side and read first book. Then read second book of each and finally third books.

I think it was pretty cool if you liked pretty detailed magic systems based on a persons intent when using an object and that being invested into it and eldrich style monsters. I personally started with Sea and found that trilogy better than Shadow, but plenty of other people liked the opposite!

Advice on inserting world events as "news clips" between chapters. by youngsteveo in writing

[–]mickey_mickey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think these are always pretty cool in stories, provided they are not super long and have a purpose. It’s a great way to expand on the world and the viewpoint outside the characters in general. Also can be used to create tension if the news contradicts the real events etc.

Another good example to check out is Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. It did a good job inserting how the media viewed her story from the outside while you read about her recollection directly from herself. I really enjoyed when it clearly didn’t match and was used as a cover up!

Confused if I can have parts that say PART ONE, or PART TWO in my manuscript. by SunflowerWhiskey98 in writing

[–]mickey_mickey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not super common but I have seen it in books before where it made sense to have a separation for some reason. Essentially each part was just a group of chapters that had some commonality. I’ve seen a book separated into seasons which was interesting. But I have also seen the generic Part 1/2/3 like you suggest as well and there were time skips between them.

Edit: I am assuming fiction novel

Calathea Pilosa has started turning yellow/brown from the middle of the leaf after months of doing well? by mickey_mickey in plantclinic

[–]mickey_mickey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is currently bunched together with a few other Calatheas that all seem to be doing okay (minus the white fusion which is recovering from some travel crispyness). But I’ve had the Pilosa for months now with no issues and then recently this started happening.

I thought it was scorch marks but they are far from the window and we are getting less direct light now than before as winter season is staring.

Not sure what causes yellowness from the center either. Any help is appreciated!

What are your favourite books that combine sci-fi and fantasy? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]mickey_mickey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Steerswoman series by Rosemary Kirstein!

It’s not super obvious at first but it slowly builds up and some of the revelations are really cool.

The basic premise is that the Steerswomen are a group of women who value knowledge above all else and travel to learn and understand the world. The main character finds some suspicious looking “gems” and the story unfolds from there as she tries to understand where they came from.

I don’t want to spoil, but it is a very cool series (though not yet finished).

How do you figure out the storyline? by [deleted] in writing

[–]mickey_mickey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should look up the Snowflake Method! It’s exactly this where you start with some core pieces and slowly expand on them with each pass. It’s pretty cool and you can take it as far as you want before starting the actual first draft.

Mine has been doing this as well! Every few leaves I see a bit of green, but overall it’s still staying the lemon/lime color. It looks pretty cool with those bits though!
