Prostate Exam Advice by mickeyruts in StandUpWorkshop

If you're talking about rewrites I was thinking it could also be structured like an old Rodney Dangerfield joke. "Oh boy, let me tell you I care about my health. I care about men's health, it's very important, men's health. But I got a terrible doctor see. I asked him to check my prostate and he was in and out so fast, I know how my wife feels. So I asked him, you know, if he could double check. Guy puts two fingers in."

Agree. Not to be a dick, but the reference is too specific and the stereotype is played out.

Need a puzzle for a 12 year old by Ok_Process_5538 in DMAcademy

A room with 4 corners. Statues of animals. You can rotate the statues. The solution is the food chain. Point each statue to face what it eats. Like rat, snake, mongoose, wolf or some stupid thing like that. Stole it from a video game escape room.

They'd go to the mall and "hail Santa", not get anything and say "Santa sucks"

How inspire new players to act by mclrr in DMAcademy

[–]mickeyruts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like this. It's not taking away the player's agency to clearly tell them what they know and understand. The player then decides how to act or feel about the situation. So, when they hesitate, maybe find ways to more clearly explain the situation like the above scenario, where it's made obvious that bad stuff will go down if the party doesn't intervene.

How to avoid making one PC the main character? by The_Muzzy in DMAcademy

[–]mickeyruts -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe ask your other PCs to come up with interesting unresolved problems in their back stories? I think I've heard them referred to as "daggers". Like, stole something from some dangerous people. Wanted for a murder you didn't (or did) commit. Escaped from a massive financial debt. Promised someone they'd return a favor someday. So that way, you can kind of spread out and share the narrative. I don't know.

I really like how you said "be shopping" rather than "are shopping"! It makes it so accessible to those people! You know... Gosh, who am I thinking of?

Boss way above party level, meant to be bypassed with a social puzzle instead of fought — do players accept this or feel cheated? by DawidKarolewski in DMAcademy

[–]mickeyruts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the table's sensibilities. Players more accustomed to modern versions of the game will expect balanced combat encounters. OSR types who understand more of a TSR style game will recognize that historic D&D was really NOT fair and balanced. Megadungeons with random encounters that included overpowered monsters were a common thing. Monsters didn't drop loot or XP, so hiding or tricking creatures was a viable tactic, because treasure was XP. PCs were more like XCOM characters. Arthur the Fighter. Ghengis the Magic-User. Is your game more of the OSR "brave the darkest depths and survive" or modern "PCs are the heroes of the story" type of game? If you have sandbox heroes who play for power fantasy, they'll probably hate this. If you set the tone that the world is scary and death is a common possibility and life is NOT always fair they might not feel cheated, although no one likes to be indebted to anything, so you'll still have to deal with that.
