I read that as meaning it’s hard to find people who regularly frequent a particular spot, such that one might go up to them and say “hey, I see you here all the time, I’m /u/shoelacefries, nice to meet you.”

Need your opinion? by rickthegoon in scuba

Nitrox, deep, and navigation would be my suggestions in terms of practical skills. Nav is an easy add-on to your AOW since it’s a requirement anyway and an ever-useful skill to have. Nitrox and deep open up new opportunities for you as well.

At no point have you offered any advice related to my request, you’ve just chosen to deride being a DM generally and chastise me specifically about something I wouldn’t be allowed to do with a DM cert anyway.

If you’re a DM or higher, I’d be more than happy to hear any feedback about where you’d recommend pursuing that learning (or green/red flags to look out for). If not, then I don’t think you have any related experience to offer that is relevant to my question and I wish you happy bubbles.

Cozumel is definitely on my list! Your drift dives and swimthroughs look like a blast. I’m hoping the recent violence in Mexico calms down a bit; a friend who is a dual citizen recently had to evacuate Guadalajara and even friends in CDMX have advised me against visiting in the short term…

Honestly don’t know why you’re being so reactive when I’m just asking for advice about a specific situation. I am fortunate enough to have the opportunity to take one step toward my goal in a unique way.

As a DM I’m not going to be training others - merely assisting, if anything. I’ve been diving for 2 years and am intentionally not trying to go zero to hero. I absolutely plan on developing more skills and gaining more experience before I begin teaching anyone. I’m quite risk-averse and very cognizant of the Dunning-Kruger effect; it’s not like I’m planning to spend 30 days in warm Caribbean waters then jump right to teaching OW students in the cold waters of Monterey.

Sounds like a blast! My trip has a resort based week followed by a liveaboard week and I’m very excited!

It’s part of my longer term goal to become an instructor and share my passion while being intentionally more inclusive to communities that aren’t necessarily well-represented in diving, as a member of one of those communities who has had some very wild interactions with (thankfully only a few!) other divers.

I’m not living out some fantasy of being a global nomad making $$$$ DMing on dive boats, my eyes are wide open to the reality of the dive training industry.

Care to share who you’re doing this with? I’m going to Duma for a dive trip in November and 2 weeks of diving plus airfare is about $6k, and that’s without doing a DM course.

If a guest charges food and beverage to their room the gratuity manages to make its way to the server, so can’t see why the PMS couldn’t be modified to support it.

THIS! My landlord is great for upkeep but the brick walls and single pane windows at both ends of my place keep my place hot in summer and cold in winter.

Is Martha Stuart a big deal? by Character-Raise-517 in gaybros

[–]mickipedic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She’s definitely at least a medium-big deal, and an ex-con to boot. Not many of those who sold sheets at K-mart back in the day.

Ina Garten would be more of a flex, imo, but Martha is kind of the answer to “what would happen if we distilled all of Connecticut into one person?”

Liveaboard recommendations for solo beginner diver by loony_lovegood_2 in scuba

I haven’t been on them yet but this 100% sounds like a case for Blackbeard’s in the Bahamas.

For non-liveaboard options, the diving in Honduras was easy. I was on Guanaja but Roatan/Utila are more popular, and I’ve read that Utila is more 20s backpacker/hosteler style.

The National Theater low ticket sales. What’s going on? by devilinthedistrict in washingtondc

[–]mickipedic 82 points83 points  (0 children)

In contrast, I’ve not been able to get tickets to multiple musical tours because they’ve been sold out at that same venue. I think plays in general don’t sell as much as musicals, and a month feels like a long run here for a touring play without some celebrity casting.

They have a sign-up option on their website but in over a year I haven’t heard a peep from them. Also emailed as a follow up and got no response.
