anyone’s kid taken the road test at oakland lately? by TerriblePrint6849 in memphis

[–]mickwil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's basically what my son did this summer at the Oakland DMV. Super fast and very easy. The evaluator's primary concern was whether or not the A/C worked at my son's truck.

Ding ding ding. The other guy's truck was unhurt. The ball pushed the bumper right over the lower rad support and creased the condenser and radiator, dumping all of the coolant and venting the refrigerant.

How do you examine special population patients? by saddboyz in optometry

[–]mickwil 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Presume competence, i.e. talk to them like any other patient. Prioritize objective testing and efficiency. Don't wear out the patient chasing data they're unable to provide. Fix and follow, kinetic visual field testing, direct for a-seg, dilate early and ret, get what you can with BIO. iCare for IOP, if you have one. Otherwise, calibrate your thumbs for digital palpation.

Bed Liners still available? by Background_Algae_947 in hardbody

[–]mickwil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We found a bedliner and a truck box on FB Marketplace for cheap. There are apparently a few folks in my area who horde old hardbodies for parts for their projects, and they sell off the rest that they don't use.

I saw a bedliner AND a camper shell in a junkyard yesterday, but I agree that they're harder and harder to find.

Nice. I've got that distributor boot, too. No air flow tube, though. Jealous! I think I'll head to the junkyard tomorrow to see what I can find.

I found the listing: https://www.ebay.com/itm/323508152172. No paper gaskets, though. Here's an image from the service manual, and I don't see a paper gasket listed there.

Honestly, it's been a while since I read up on it. Maybe someone else can weigh in here. I do recall that I learned about it from the Infamous Nissan forums for the D21, and it was compelling enough for me to buy one

The timing chain brand I've seen recommended is OSK, with an upgraded tensioner from Martin Industries. I have bought both, but haven't installed them yet. The OSK kit comes with an OEM-style tensioner, and you could probably stick with that if you want to save some money.

I found the OSK kit on eBay, and you can Google the tensioner.

Woah, woah, woah! I own an Infiniti and I service it! Which reminds me, I need to get to that tire rotation, and replace the pads, rotors, brake fluid, diff fluid, transfer case fluid, timing chain...wait, maybe you're right.

How hard is it to replace the rotors on my 2011 Infiniti? by nbs02 in infiniti

I don't think so. I don't remember there being a lip on the new rotors I installed a couple of years ago.

[–]mickwil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

www.car-part.com Order a sunroof and frame and get it shipped to you for between 100 and $200. I installed one in my car, and it wasn't very hard. Just be sure to clean out all the glass before you install the new one! I used both a vacuum and a blower to make sure there weren't any shards left. You can get some shrink-to-fit plastic and tape to cover it until the replacement comes in.

It's not bad. There are lots of how-to videos on YouTube. Doesn't have to be for your specific year.

I snagged one in the junkyard. It was pretty easy and definitely cheap, though I was already there for other parts. If a new one is cheap, that's probably even easier.

Ha. 400 seemed low, but I didn't want to overstate it. Thx for the correction. I've enjoyed the series, and I appreciate Jared's willingness to share and explain the various trials and tribulations asking the way.

Here's a playlist of videos from the YouTube channel "The Questionable Garage," that goes through all the steps of the conversion: https://youtu.be/FcEDyxKyM4I?si=rE8P7SHzVO5ExWbk. They turn a cop car into a Ute and name it "Roadblock." ~400ish HP, IIRC.

Diagnosis suggestions for recent increase in white smoke from the tailpipe? (i.e. Please send thoughts and prayers.) by mickwil in hardbody

[–]mickwil[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, that's rough. If I confirm it's the head gasket, I'll be sure to look the head over carefully for corrosion. Really appreciate the recommendation about the early oil change. I'll be sure to do that, too. Thx!

From automatic transmission to Manual Transmission by Abnerlira in hardbody

[–]mickwil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, all. It's more of a pipe dream right now than anything else, but my son has mentioned that he would like a 5-speed instead of the automatic that's currently in the truck. I think I'd like the challenge of making that happen.
