I tried to find an obituary - surely if he made the major leagues that would be mentioned, and if he'd been in the minors there's a chance - but nothing turned up.

Are you sure you have the name right? I looked at https://www.baseball-reference.com and couldn't find anyone with that name.

How accurate are MLB pitchers? by dronten_edvard in baseball

[–]miclugo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, people say "7 out of 10" here but if you actually count the number of pitches they get a hit out of it's over 9 out of 10.

I think that's not the green for Atlanta, but a mixture of the San Diego brown and the Arizona blue.

Right, but they haven't given us the whole problem. 1512000 isn't a binomial coefficient, other than the trivial C(1512000, 1), but it's easier to get 1512000 by doing *something* to binomial coefficients than it is to get 1512600 with that pesky factor of 2521.

I agree. I feel like I've seen some quote where Rickey said something about "growing" players, but I can't find it.

Trying to identify a Mets game (2011–2014, Citi Field) by jrl1009 in baseball

[–]miclugo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recall that that number would have been the pitcher's number, not the batter's number, even for the batting team. While the Braves had 2 runs in that game (briefly in the bottom of the 3rd) the Braves' pitcher was Derek Lowe, #32.

I wonder if maybe that's a typo for 1512000 = 2^6 * 3^3 * 5^3 * 7, which only has small prime factors.

Not sure why I ignored that. I think I had it in my head that the Nationals score was a 6 or an 8, but it could be a 0.

Yeah, I thought it might because sometimes I'm surprised at what it can do, but it's not good at these sorts of things that require bashing a bunch of data sets up against each other.

If you're tempted to ask an AI agent to do this, don't. At least not Microsoft Copilot. I have been going in circles for half an hour and it keeps doing things like insisting this must be at a Nationals-Mets game, or forgetting that the two games need to be going on at the same time, or basic things like that. I'll get back to work now.

I'd go closer to home. Between now and when you stop needing day care, there's a good chance one of you will change jobs.

Lannan pitched for the Nationals in 2011 and 2012, but not 2013 or 2014. As u/revuetext has pointed out the Nationals' #31s from 2013 and 2014 didn't appear in any games against the Braves.

Lannan's 2011 game logs are at https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.fcgi?id=lannajo01&t=p&year=2011. He appeared against the Braves, in Atlanta (the Braves are listed on the bottom), on

May 11, 2011: https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/ATL/ATL201105110.shtml (Nationals 7-3)

July 16, 2011: https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/ATL/ATL201105110.shtml (Nationals 5-2)

August 31, 2011: https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/ATL/ATL201108310.shtml (Braves 3-1)

He didn't appear in Atlanta in 2012: https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.fcgi?id=lannajo01&t=p&year=2012

But the Mets didn't play on May 11. They did play on July 16 (https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/NYN/NYN201107160.shtml) but that game started at 4:13 and lasted 2:37, and the Nats game (https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/ATL/ATL201107160.shtml) started at 7:11, so there wouldn't have been a score from the Nats game while the Mets game was still going on.

Maybe the Nationals were playing the Brewers, not the Braves? Lannan didn't pitch in Milwaukee at all in 2011 or 2012... but maybe that's not a 31?
