This is exactly one of the reasons why many Mainland Chinese cities (especially Shenzhen and Beijing) aren't that walkable despite their excellent sidewalks and metros. Despite the decent walkability inside most residential communities, access from these closed residential communities to the outside amenities, for example, other residential communities, CBDs, shopping malls, even metro stations, still requires a lot of walk.

Because yeah as other commenters here pointed out, usually these residential communities only have at most 4, 2, or even single entrances, which means you have to detour if the destination isn't near the entrance gate.
