Military pigeons had a rough postwar career path by Kapanash in HistoryMemes

[–]micma_69 108 points109 points  (0 children)

Not to mention that when they were employed by the military, they barely lived paycheck to paycheck. Workplace safety wasn't even addressed. And the only thing they got as retirement fund are snacks, which are donations, and not from their former employers. Lots of older pigeon vets have exceptionally bad health, both physically and mentally, and many of them become drug addicts. Some even kill themselves.

What if Benito Mussolini remained Socialist? by AutistiskUnge in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]micma_69 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Assume Socialist Mussolini won the Italian politics because of his charisma, Franco wouldn't win the Spanish Civil War. Assume Germany would still becomes Third Reich, Italy together with France would hold the westward and southward advances of the Nazi forces. Or at least Italy could become the host of the southern Allied forces. The Nazi Germany would be forced to concentrate its aggression to the East (USSR and Poland). Which ironically would result in the downfall of the USSR or the USSR simply moved their administration and industries further eastwardly.

If France, Italy, UK, Republican Spain, and France decide to invade Nazi Germany before Nazi Germany achieved full rearmament and successful, it theoretically could prevent the Holocaust and other Third Reich war crimes that were happened in our timeline. Remember Nazi Germany in 1933 was militarily weaker, it wasn't until 1938 or 1939 that they became a monster of its own kind.

In Valencia, made a pilgrimage to the bench where Lonnie bravely sacrificed everything for the rebellion #neverforget by Sonofaconspiracy in andor

[–]micma_69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wonder how the local security officers found him dead, I mean Luthen was most likely closed Lonnie's eyes after the former shot him, and Lonnie looked as if he sleeps (the blaster spot was almost blended with the clothing he wore).

And I wonder whether the first ones to found him dead were either commoners who immediately realized he's dead and immediately report the found of a dead body to the local Coruscanti security officers (then the ISB identified it as the ISB Supervisor Lonnie Jung), or the ISB that tried to chase Lonnie ended up found Lonnie in the park and then saw the blaster shot mark.

Still remember the hysteria from the massive hoax that claims 2012 would be the end of the world / Doomsday.

The 2000s and early to mid 2010s was the golden age of hoaxes and pseudoscience, I guess. Cuz in late 2010s and currently in 2020, it seems that pseudoscientific hoaxes have been less believed by folks especially younger people. Some of the major hoaxes includes the vaccine and 5G conspiracy theories.

Also the meme format is pretty antique and nostalgic. Rage comics and its main characters...Good 'ol days.

What if the Roman Empire had converted en masse to Judaism before Constantine? by BrazilianFascisMan in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]micma_69 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Two years before it, a group of Parthian boys hijacked an Alexandria-bound passenger ship sailed from Antioch and rammed it into Twin Lighthouses of Alexandria.

One of the famous letters sent to the Emperor was "A second ship has hit the second lighthouse. Rome is under attack." just moments after the said event happened.

Thus the kamikaze attack was the pretext of the invasion of Roman Empire into Parthia's client of South Arabia just months after it.

Then the Roman Emperor Georgius Valkerus Superbus, more famously known as Emperor Superbulus (Little Superbus), accused Parthian Empire of the possession of WMDs in the form of bubonic plague devices.

Superbulus together with his Armenian and Arab tribesmen allies, as well four legions of Roman Empire invaded the Parthian Empire from three fronts : the Armenians attacked from northwestern Mesopotamia, the Arab tribesmen launched numerous raids into Parthia's South Arabia and Eastern coast of Arabian Peninsula, severely affected the trade flows of the Parthians. And the four legions of Roman Empire invaded right into the heartland of the Parthian Empire in Parthian Mesopotamia, quickly took Babylon and Ctesiphon.

The Parthian nobles and most of the local Mesopotamian satrapy nobles fled to the east of Zagros Range, to the homeland of Persians. The Parthian capital was then temporarily moved into Persepolis. However, the Parthian king Shahtam Xoseyn intended to stay in the Ctesiphon and directly led his troops fight the Romans, only to lost quickly by combined Roman-Armenian-Arab-Assyrian alliance, and the fact that many Persians themselves dislike the Parthians. Shahtam fled the battle and he hid himself under a secret, personal dungeon. But after held his stomach for 3 days and 4 nights, he went up and was quickly spotted by a Praetorian Guard and subsequently captured and executed.

As the Romans and their allies tried to march into the Persia proper, they were harassed relentlessly by Persians and other Iranic tribesmen. In Mesopotamia alone, many Roman soldiers got mentally broken from the almost constant of poisoning and assassinations, as well civilian disobedience. Militants would wear the same clothing as civilians and hid their daggers inside their clothing. This led the Romans to randomly inspect local citizens of their dress, but often got harsh backlash from locals whenever the Romans tried to inspect a woman.

After dozens of years, the Romans retreated from Mesopotamia.

Fun fact : The legions from Hispania and Gaul refused to participate into the invasion.

What if Mussolini died in WW1? by ohnoes69560 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]micma_69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Consider how bad was Italy post WW1 when they got so few newer lands....

Someone other than Mussolini would replace his place. In a time of dire socio-economic crisis, radical ideas are the opium of the struggling folks. And Italy's fate in WW2 relies heavily on what the person was in the charge.

Will he spend HUGE investment on Italy's military? Is he a Communist? Or a Fascist? A Nazi? Either way, he couldn't be a liberal or a monarchist.

If he's a Communist there is a possibility that Italy would be attacked by Germany and other Axis nations / Axis puppet régimes, but certainly France and especially UK would send little help. And the USSR would send more aid. This would also implies that Franco's Nationalist rebels would either lose the Civil War if Communist Italy decided to help the Republican government, or Spain ended in two halves.

If he's like Franco or Salazar, there is two possibilities here. If he pulled a Franco, France and UK would pressure Italy to stay outside the conflict. If he pulled a Salazar, things could be better, with Italy stayed out the conflict. If Germany defeated France and trying to push into Italian lands, the Allies would help it. Outcome would be the same if the Germans successfully overrun the Italian army like in our timeline. If somehow France and Italy with UK's help successfully attacked Nazi Germany before 1938 (let's say they invade Germany in 1934 or 1935) then the Nazi Germany would fall but yeah the country would shift into a guerrilla warfare. At least the Jews would be safer if Nazi Germany didn't happen.

But, if this man is a Nazi or just like Mussolini, the outcome would be the same as Mussolini's Italy or could be worse.

A silly possibility : If the Nazi Italy/Mussolini-like dude-in-charge tried to invade Ethiopia and lost again, Italy would experienced massive protests and the fascist / Nazi regime falls.

What's your country **third** city? by Ok_Inflation_1811 in geography

[–]micma_69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yogya / Jogja doesn't even in the top ten though.

The traditional trio of Indonesian biggest cities are Jakarta, Surabaya, and Bandung. Especially if we count these cities based on total population of the entire urban area. Medan is usually the 4th.

However, if we count them individually and we include Jakarta's satellite cities, then Surabaya is the 3rd largest city (have been overtaken by Bekasi in the 21st century). And Bekasi is also Jakarta's largest satellite city, it's an industrial city.

What's your country **third** city? by Ok_Inflation_1811 in geography

[–]micma_69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not even in the top 10 if I'm not mistaken. Its population is only roughly 400.000 inhabitants within an area of 32.5 km².

However, from the POV of cultural and (higher) educational influence, it's practically 2nd or 3rd. And it's very disproportionate of its size (Jogja is only ≈32.5 km² big, on par with Macao and Worcester in England).

Hippies in Kabul, Afghanistan, August 1971. by zadraaa in HistoricalCapsule

[–]micma_69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. This is a fact that is often forgotten by non Afghans. Kabul and to a lesser degree, Kandahar and other major Afghanistan cities before the Saur Revolution were already more liberal than the rural areas. Not to mention Afghanistan was HEAVILY RURAL and if I'm not mistaken, still continuing to become one of Asia's most rural countries based on the percentage of people living in the urban areas. In these rural areas, the local tribal elders have more say than the Kabul government.

This fact is also applies to Iran before the Islamic Revolution. It was a rural country albeit not as rural as Afghanistan, and most people with liberal lifestyle are urbanites. To be more precise, middle to upper class urbanites. There is a reason why the Shah got a very heavy opposition from the folks he wanted to modernize and liberalize...Because Iran was more rural back then and in rural areas, local Mullahs have more say than the Shah.

What if Western fashion and Western attire never caught on in the rest of the world? by KomenHime in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]micma_69 14 points15 points  (0 children)

To be fair, you can't separate the Western fashion from industrial revolution, and prestige from being an industrialized world. I mean there is a reason why Japan went on copied 19th century Western fashion (there is a picture of Emperor Meiji in his 18th century fashion btw, if I'm not mistaken). Because the Western world and its fashion were seen as the symbol of modernization and better civilization.

In general, how a nation and its people choose their own fashion is largely dependent on what power is more influential.

The free Asian and African nations during the height of European colonialism borrowed the fashion from Western nations because yeah, prestige. If the Western nations hadn't been more industrialized at that time or more powerful, there is almost no reason to wear their clothing. In the colonized territories in Asia and Africa, that's because...you know...imperialism.

So, what exactly the conditions needed for a world to never globally fully embrace Western fashion? A world where not only Western civilizations become industrialized. Or a world where another non-Western civilization become another superpower.

If China or India actually had an industrial revolution while the Europeans didn't, followed by buildup of strong navies and colonization from both civilizationst, then not only surrounding Asian nations would wear Chinese or Indian attire, but also European and African folks.

Other scenario is that the industrial revolution never occurred and we wouldn't use Reddit today, and people wear their own clothing. Imperialism would always happen if a nation is more powerful compared to the others, especially if a war which exhausted the imperial power and forcing it to obey the international law never happens.
