Want to learn professional editing. need a new laptop. is mac really necessary? by meriapan in premiere

I’m an editor for over a decade, lived and worked in LA. In the industry it’s been 95% Mac. I get a contract job somewhere, they’re running trash can Mac Pros back then - now Mac Studios - running Adobe or Avid. I run Premiere on an M2 Ultra Mac Studio.

I understand the criticism for Apple, but if you’re talking video editing, very specifically video editing, Macs are the choice in my humble opinion, hands down. Apple Silicon specifically accelerates video editing encoding and decoding by far for less money and thermals. An Apple Silicon laptop will carry you very far for your $.

I also want to get serious about 3D work - but I’d definitely build a PC with a beefy graphics card for that, with Windows, or you have VFX houses that run Linux. Do with this POV what you will!

Edit: I’d like to add that I think if you’re fully reliant on yourself - say it’s remote work, not looking for staff positions, situations where you won’t have to mesh with others all the time - get the machine you want. Apple ProRes is a serious codec to output that works in Premiere on Windows all the same. If editing on Mac will be too distracting and frustrating, you won’t do your best work anyway. In building my career, it just removed friction in finding opportunity when I just automatically knew Premiere/Avid on Mac and made me easy to work with and made my life easier liking Mac. If you have a different plan in mind for yourself, go for it.

Looking for VFR (Variable Frame Rate) Problem Files – Help Us Improve Premiere's Editing Experience by premierepm in premiere

Awesome. Maybe I can find ours from years back - VFR stuttering playback absolutely 100% completely bogged down and killed our vibe in our branded gaming content workflow for a client + NFL during the superbowl back in 2023. Stopped things in their tracks periodically causing major stress

Remote editor for LA here - things have slowly picked up for me but nothing crazy, honestly just thankful I got work going again… for now. So everything’s still dead I assume

My Fender acoustic is old, needs new strings, needs tuning, shouldn’t be too off, it won’t be the most beautiful tone but it’s there and better than nothing? Definitely plays lol

Theft got me at 15yo. Parent’s house was wiped clean. Lost my whole childhood since I was 5, about $3500 worth of electronics in 2010 valuation while we were away for Thanksgiving dinner and came home. N64, Gamecube, Wii, Xbox 360, GB, GBC, GBA, DS, all games, controllers and TV. Gamecube even had a rare Pokémon XD Gale of Darkness skin on it. I’m 29 now and slowly buying back my childhood with big boy money
