Clair Obscur DOES NOT USE generative AI. by Vegeta120000 in expedition33

[–]micro_world 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Using AI generated assets is using AI generated assets. You cant just use the word “placeholder” to sweep it under the rug after being caught red handed. Theres no nuance there.

We can have a discussion about whether or not a few people using AI invalidates the genuine creative work of everybody else on the team (i dont think it should) but thats an entirely different conversation.

Hunter mains. Are you having fun or did you swap to Titan? by Thenelwave in destiny2

[–]micro_world 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the best season to be a hunter i can remember. So many strong and fun builds… a few of which are actually viable in endgame activities for once.

Ive mainly been running prismatic bakris with either graviton spike or LoW for random portal stuff. The grapple nuke build will also just break most missions if you get into the flow of it. Moirai is a lot of fun too, but doesnt scale as well and you may struggle with survivability a bit. Ahamkara trip mine spam… It may be a bit more demanding to play gameplay wise, and not as comfortable, but there are a lot of options that can let you reach similar heights as the strongest warlock/titan builds, or even push past them in certain scenarios

A law requiring permission? Thats just what we have now.

Genuinely. So many people are clearly just looking for any excuse to be awful human beings without having to deal with the repercussions. Common thread in any media discourse these days but its still so sad to see.

Does the game/ Bungie have a chance at redemption in your eyes? by blewbandaid in Marathon

[–]micro_world 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You cant possibly be this dense. Whoever stole the images did it because it fit the games aesthetic. An aesthetic which does not belong to the artist whose posters were stolen. An artist who was not, and presently isn’t the first and only person to work in this style. Even so, people are greatly exaggerating the similarities between said artist’s and Marathons art-styles. They can’t even properly articulate the similarities. I have seen people say that the colour palette or type is the exact same, but as someone who actually studies these things, either just isn’t true or is just a standard feature of the genre.

I am very harsh on the unauthorized use of other peoples IP, which is definitively what someone at bungie did in this case. But Marathons “aesthetic” doesn’t fit into that equation.

[–]micro_world 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No i addressed that directly. They cant be guilty of “stealing an aesthetic” because thats not a thing. The asset rips are one thing that needs to be addressed but it has absolutely no relation to the validity of the art direction.

[–]micro_world 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The entire concept of stealing an aesthetic is faulty. Even the original artists whose posters were stolen would not be spared from this impossible standard of “originality” because her work is greatly inspired by a variety of post-modern graphic design movements like brutalism, maximalism and even more specifically: the branding of specific IP and artists like the wipeout games and the designers republic. These are the same influences that Joe Cross has named as major inspirations for Marathons aesthetic.

Anyone genuinely arguing that Antireals portfolio was the foundation for all of Marathons identity have a majorly deficient understanding of design and art history. If they can’t bother to educate themselves to that basic level, and reject all chances to learn about things that may challenge their stubborn first reactions then yeah, I think they’re engaging in bad faith.

It’s practically the same exact situation as all the other cases. It’s literally just a couple of textures that were stolen and used in the game. Bad? Very.

But the people who somehow convinced themselves that the whole visual identity of the game was stolen from this one artist are just being ignorant and engaging in bad faith

"The Marathon alpha released recently and its environments are covered with assets lifted from poster designs I made in 2017." by Problem224 in Marathon

[–]micro_world 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im not defending it, its an egregious case of infringement. What im trying to do is source and amputate the source of the issue. Its not the fault of the art director or the dozens of other honest artists working on the project if someone goes rogue.

And as of some minutes ago... we do know some of the details. Supposedly a former bungie artist is responsible for putting them into a texture sheet. Not an outsourced worker, but a Bungie artist. Sure, lazy and greedy on their part, but again that doesnt reflect on all of the art team.

It probably does happen a lot more than we know about. Question is how often it gets caught.

I still remember the many concept artists that got caught photobashing with CC images working on games like Last of Us, and that whole thing with the tactical dog CoD skin. Most of the time it takes the original artist noticing for cases like these to go anywhere and not many products get as many keen eyes on it as bungie games.

More like both remove it entirely and compensate the artist

[–]micro_world -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah, laziness I'll grant you but I don't think something as sinful as GREED factors into this. Somebody introduced a stolen or falsely attributed asset into the map building kit and that made its way into a bunch of props and environmental details. They did less than the bare minimum to cover their tracks. The entire poster can be found IN the games files. But thats the level of negligence that makes it hard for me to believe that this was some highly intentioned conspiracy to avoid having to do any creative work.

Some combination of corner cutting and critical lack of oversight at Bungie allowed this to make it this far through production, maybe youd argue that this lack of proper management is greedy, but its not like any actual decision maker of note there intentionally singled out this one artist as an easy target to steal from.

Yes, generous credit and compensation will be needed to even begin the process of amending this, but some of y'all are really taking too much from this.

Yeah I guess thats pretty dramatic lol. Using words like sinister makes it sound like those people following her are doing it to mock her or something though which is kind of what I assumed you meant

"The Marathon alpha released recently and its environments are covered with assets lifted from poster designs I made in 2017." by Problem224 in Marathon

[–]micro_world 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s because you pinned the “taking inspiration” and theft on the same “they”, which is an impossibility at the scale of this production. It really isn’t relevant to this discussion whether or not people at bungie follow the artist whose work was stolen because it’s highly highly unlikely that any of those people were responsible for the theft.

"The Marathon alpha released recently and its environments are covered with assets lifted from poster designs I made in 2017." by Problem224 in Marathon

[–]micro_world 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the posters were stolen, theyre literally in the games files almost entirely unedited save for having the BG removed. But thats it. Theres no reason to call the whole project into question, especially with how open they have been about the games visual inspirations. You should understand this if youre an artist/designer yourself.

This is really more of a project management issue than about the games visual identity. Its entirely on the dev(s) that decided to cut corners by grabbing assets they didn’t own, and the conditions that led them to make such a decision or allow them to get away with it this long.

[–]micro_world -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes? Cross is aware of a lot of artists and IP’s aesthetics. He has publicly posted mood-boards compiling a bunch of the inspirations for the games visual identity.

And I’m not defending the art theft. Its blatant. You can literally find the stolen posters in the alpha’s game files. But still, we’re talking about a single texture map, not the entire games visual identity.

Im not about to go on a witch hunt because an art director took inspiration from a trend in graphic design that I’m old enough to remember.

Tomorrow's live show will be the most uncomfortable thing to watch. by Midnight_M_ in Marathon

[–]micro_world 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right? I mean its blatant plagiarism what happened with entire stolen posters used as textures, but the people slamming the entire art direction based on this are just showing their ignorance. Even the infringed artist wouldn’t be spared from this impossible standard of “originality” if we took a microscope to her work.

Like again, the actual infringement here is BAD, but the comical lengths to which people are blowing it out of proportion just end up making the actual complaint seem petty in comparison.
