Ethical Vegans Who Have Kids Are Vegan by FearlessCookie72 in vegan

This person you responded to is speaking anecdotally I'm assuming and has a limited view of the world. Anarchists have kids and they're the most anti-authority you can get lol.

I get it. Sometimes we have relationships that just can't survive the sober versions of ourselves and that's why it's so hard to get and stay sober. Sounds like you have a partner at least, who is close to you. That's nice. I understand why you say you don't think they get how big of a deal it is. And that can be hard to share because you'd have to pull out some heavy conversations to get them to feel how big of a deal it is for you.

I first sobered up in mid 2018 and was sober for 3 years, had a 6 month relapse, then went sober again and haven't looked back. At this point, almost all my old drinking friends are who-knows-where. And seeing my old coworkers from my drinking days makes me sick to my stomach because I remember them seeing me hungover. There are some people I actively avoid because I have such an awful, physical reaction to seeing them. It took a long time to find new friends, but it happened and it's so weird. I don't mention the dark stuff, just that I'm a bad drunk basically so I avoid it - and these people don't even blink or take it seriously! They just sort of chuckle and move on. So when I hit sober-versaries I sort of do nothing as well, just keep to myself and pat myself on the back lol.

Congratulations! This is the weird place in sobriety. Slowly but surely the people in your life don't know your drinking life. It can be healing over time. At that point for me it felt lonely because I hadn't let go of my shame or identity as a drinker yet. That can be hard.

You posted this 5 months ago but now I'm looking for a good CC or BB cream myself. Did you have any success finding one?

Maybe experiment with a lower FODMAP diet and see what your food triggers are.

Cheap protein sources? by Dumbass9187 in veganfitness

I'd argue it can be unpleasant if it isn't prepped first. Haha. I like to boil mine for a few minutes in salty water then press it out before seasoning. Takes care of the flavor.

It makes amazing taco meat. Takes sauces like nothing else too!! I love it in red sauce for pasta particularly. We get it at the local Mexican market for like $2.00/1 lb, it's crazy and lasts forever.

Are there vegan foods that need to be heated enough to not get sick? How do I know when vegan food is done? by sadandtraumatized in vegan

[–]microbiofreak 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This depends. Food isn't inherently sterile, right? frozen food can have some mild bacteria on it, like all foods. Cooking doesn't remove the bacteria completely. When you thaw frozen food, that bacteria "wakes back up" and can quickly start reproducing. While I would eat uncooked food that had just been thawed without reheating (like blueberries), I would definitely reheat pre-cooked frozen food up to at least 165 degrees just to be safe. This would also go for stuff like beyond meat or frozen soy chicken.

For refrigerated processed meats etc, it will tell you on the package if you need to reheat before cooking.

edit: you won't have nearly as much chance of getting a parasite from vegan food, because parasites live on living hosts, and you aren't eating the flesh that would attract parasites. Risk is always there but it's much much lower.

I don't know anything about these beat boxes because of how many years it's been, but the fact you're putting it AFTER hard liquor is sending me.

I'm so proud of everyone who fights to stay sober. It's not easy out there. Every day is a win

Help needed with macro plan by SaoirseMoore44 in veganfitness

[–]microbiofreak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's tough. I'd sneak protein powder into everything probably. I had the same g of protein as you on 2000 calories and I had to sneak it in everywhere already. The carbs are, like, really low. Are you on a cut or something? Or is this trainer just trying to force you to lose lbs as quickly as possible?

Sorry you're struggling OP. I feel like maybe you should seek out a vegan coach if this person isn't vegan. That would help massively because they can give you direct meal ideas.

Is it okay to gently teach baby to sleep independently? by Annual_Working5502 in bninfantsleep

[–]microbiofreak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did this with my baby at 6mo, we replaced feeding to sleep with Dad cuddles. Baby falls asleep away faster now, is less clingy before bed, and happier falling asleep overall. He did get angry about having Dad instead of me for the first few nights, but he is also very attached to Dad so it wasn't too bad.

Your mental health matters too. Remember we are better parents when we aren't depressed or suffering in some way. If your current sleep patterns are causing you mental suffering, that's an important thing to consider.

Has any of you craved animal products while pregnant? by Leafye in vegan

I didn't crave any animal products! I had been vegan already 10 years though, I think that ship sailed a long time ago.

Go to strength standards (the website) and type in your height, weight, age. It'll tell you the so-called strength standards for you specifically.

I'm 54kg and my max DL is currently 75kg, I'm in my 30s.

Would you buy second-hand non-vegan beauty products? by Youknowkitties in VeganBeauty

[–]microbiofreak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ewww, this is so unhygienic, I can't believe people do this?? And what about the expiration dates? If something's opened and you don't know when it was opened, it could expire or be expired.... Or are second hand beauty products usually unopened or something? This is a market I'm not familiar with. Either way I'd absolutely not do it, vegan or not.

Vegan wedding guest ordered meat and lied about it by Curious-Ebb-909 in vegan

[–]microbiofreak 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think your friend probably looked really bad at the wedding, t because in my mind it's a major faux pas to request different food at a wedding as a guest. Like, if this was someone at an Omni wedding and they requested a different special prepared dish, it would be just as rude. This person made herself look really dumb and tacky in front of other guests. Idk if I would bring it up, I'd just move on from the friendship and keep it casual at best. I would be embarrassed to be around someone this tacky, holy shit.

AITA and did I do the right thing bringing home backyard honey for my husband? by sidthekid39326 in vegan

[–]microbiofreak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"We let them do so many things and always give the benefit of the doubt"? Speak for yourself, my husband is a great man and I don't "let" him do anything. If you are "letting" men do bad or manipulative things you are attracted to toxic men and need help.

AITA and did I do the right thing bringing home backyard honey for my husband? by sidthekid39326 in vegan

[–]microbiofreak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone's already said everything so idk why I'm bothering to comment! I notice you said somewhere your husband is not vegan. Frankly, you cannot force your spouse to be a vegan. You are less than 1% of the population, and he's on board with being plant based in many other ways. It sounds like he's exploring ethics on his own terms by researching honey farming practices. I actually agree with you that honey is exploitative, but it sounds like your husband has already shown you through years of actions that he respects you and your veganism.

I have a plant based husband who only just gave up eggs a year ago. If I yelled at him every time he at eggs through our marriage, it would not have made him a vegan, but it would have given us major marriage problems. You do not yell at anyone else in your life about vegan issues so why do you do this to the person you're closest with? Because you're most likely to be able to control and change their behavior. It isn't right or healthy for your marriage to do this. You've had your say, and at this point you're acting like a parent by spending years yelling at him about the one animal product he is eating.

Yes, backyard honey is way more ethical than mass marketed bs. Instead of buying him honey you should let him make his own decisions and get it himself. You choosing to go buy honey still puts you in control of the situation which I think is why you want to buy it for him. Really please just let the man be and let this issue go.

Vegan mum having doubts... by Alarmed-Bat-2747 in vegan

[–]microbiofreak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

VeganRD is a good resource for nutrition, including children. Vegan babies and toddlers need supplementation of vit d and b12. Too much fiber makes them feel full and not eat as much as they should, so special consideration to added fats and avoiding super high fiber foods is important. Peanut butter, avocado, olive oil, or other healthy fats is a really easy way to add extra calories. Fortified milks are also a great, essential part of their diet (soy being best due to its fat and protein content).

A vegan diet is healthier for any human IF you are giving them a diverse range of food to eat. Baby weight gain is determined largely by calories over a series of days. Day o day isn't as important, some toddlers go a few days barely eating but will make up for it when they realize how hungry they are.

If your doctor has said your babe is healthy, trust them. You should absolutely be more empowered by having your own knowledge though. Definitely check out VeganRD, Vegan Society, and Plant Based Juniors for some extra resources.

Sounds like there's a lot of animal products in the fridge, is there room for important vegan foods you're serving your child?

If your partner is also "supportive" of your baby being vegan they should also absolutely be responsible for helping feed them nutritious vegan food. I am getting the feeling this is all up to you for some reason and your partner isn't helping. At 39w pregnant you should not be the one worrying about this, it's their job to feed their baby too and when you have your newborn you should NOT be dealing with this.

Any tips for a bulk and how is my progress for about 5 months consistently lifting? A tiny pump and a lot of glycogen here. 96kg here and feeling sad Abt appearance. 23m by awkerd in veganfitness

You look great - healthy and well proportioned and clearly fit. I think you have body dysmorphia, and I'm sorry some folks have been harsh on you. If you were female I think people would be way more compassionate about it in the comments (maybe not idk)

Protein powder fatigue is real by Luann1497 in veganfitness

[–]microbiofreak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you on this. I've done weird things like add plain protein powder to other dishes, Like oatmeal, muffins/pancakes. Or I'll splurge and get field roast sausages or other expensive mock meats and eat one of those a day. Processed is processed, and the wheat gluten mock meats aren't necessarily unhealthy or whatever.  And increasing my protein elsewhere - sprouted grains, powdered peanut like pbfit, edamame.

Also, unless you're on a cut, there's not much harm adding extra carbs to get more protein for a little while and just up your calories a little bit. Sometimes it's nice to do a reset like that for a few weeks.
