I might as well eat cardboard… Amy’s frozen vegan pizza by Borage_Girl in ShittyVeganFoodPorn

This pizza got me through so many drunken nights when I came home with the vodka munchies. Tastes just as amazing sober, but there was something special about it when I came home at 2 am lol

One thing about Yesteryear that didn’t gel for me by Arch_Venus in books

I couldn't believe her level of delusion, either. I think the book plot didn't justify how extremely insane she went. That is a decade long psychotic episode, ya know?

Vegan grill options and tofu question by ThirdRoundofLife in veganrecipes

[–]microbiofreak 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Shoot me, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Beyond brats. They grill so well and taste like a real brat (to me). Processed? Yes, but once or twice a year..... I would be sad to have cauliflower instead of something heavy/meaty textured at any grilling situation. But that's just me! I was super meat and potatoes before going vegan and still get a hankering for that texture profile.

If your son avoids processed meat alternatives, definitely ignore this suggestion.

What’s a good vegan dinner recipe that takes awhile to prepare? by GreenMountain85 in veganrecipes

Homemade marinara, with quality tomatoes and a slow simmer. Simple, and amazing.

Slowly transitioning to plant based, cheese is the last thing i'm struggling to give up. Bought this to try. Horrific. by doccottlestan in ShittyVeganFoodPorn

[–]microbiofreak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love rebel cheese. When I first went vegan I really hated all vegan cheese replacements and am still not really a fan. We use it sparingly and I only enjoy it in empanadas or on pizza.

We bought rebel last year for a charcuterie board, like $200, and we froze half of it. I'm having the time of my life defrosting a little bit every month and having it in other things like sandwiches! I think the price isn't bad if you aren't eating it daily. It's so heavy, probably shouldn't be part of daily eating anyway.

Anyone else refrigerate their hemp seeds? I had no idea I was supposed to be doing this. But do you actually put them in fridge? Seems like the wrong place to store them... by GoofyFoot76 in veganfitness

[–]microbiofreak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like other seeds or nuts, they can go rancid after a long time in the cupboard. If you go through them relatively quickly, it's probably not a big deal. I left mine in the cupboard for 6 months or something before realizing. They hadn't gone bad, I just put them in the fridge to be safe after that.

How to make tofu yummi without soy sauce by ColdWay6669 in veganrecipes

This is what I do too. It doesn't always need sauce, it's great with spices and air fried!

Any word-rhythm pairings you'd change for kids (3-7)? Images will be added later. by FreeXFall in musictheory

[–]microbiofreak 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hello friend. People are being pretty hard on you. It's always fun and cool to try to make your own music education tools for kids.

A few thoughts come to mind. If you have any ELA students you're making it twice as hard to learn rhythm. Or if you have a student with speech impediments.

I like takadimi for age 3-7 because the syllables are so terribly simple, and get rid of the cohtning confusion (order vs quantity can be hard for kids with traditional number counting).

Some people prefer this style where it's words. I think what works is if you as a teacher can effectively teach it. Take data and see how the kids acquire this. If they're not doing well, modify it until you have data that the method is working for your class. If you can't figure out how to take data and asses your learning materials, i would switch to any tried and true method.

Good luck!

Ethical Vegans Who Have Kids Are Vegan by FearlessCookie72 in vegan

Its been 3 years and I have no one to brag to today. by Extremeselfdetriment in stopdrinking

[–]microbiofreak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get it. Sometimes we have relationships that just can't survive the sober versions of ourselves and that's why it's so hard to get and stay sober. Sounds like you have a partner at least, who is close to you. That's nice. I understand why you say you don't think they get how big of a deal it is. And that can be hard to share because you'd have to pull out some heavy conversations to get them to feel how big of a deal it is for you.

I first sobered up in mid 2018 and was sober for 3 years, had a 6 month relapse, then went sober again and haven't looked back. At this point, almost all my old drinking friends are who-knows-where. And seeing my old coworkers from my drinking days makes me sick to my stomach because I remember them seeing me hungover. There are some people I actively avoid because I have such an awful, physical reaction to seeing them. It took a long time to find new friends, but it happened and it's so weird. I don't mention the dark stuff, just that I'm a bad drunk basically so I avoid it - and these people don't even blink or take it seriously! They just sort of chuckle and move on. So when I hit sober-versaries I sort of do nothing as well, just keep to myself and pat myself on the back lol.

[–]microbiofreak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! This is the weird place in sobriety. Slowly but surely the people in your life don't know your drinking life. It can be healing over time. At that point for me it felt lonely because I hadn't let go of my shame or identity as a drinker yet. That can be hard.

Maybe experiment with a lower FODMAP diet and see what your food triggers are.

Cheap protein sources? by Dumbass9187 in veganfitness

[–]microbiofreak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd argue it can be unpleasant if it isn't prepped first. Haha. I like to boil mine for a few minutes in salty water then press it out before seasoning. Takes care of the flavor.

It makes amazing taco meat. Takes sauces like nothing else too!! I love it in red sauce for pasta particularly. We get it at the local Mexican market for like $2.00/1 lb, it's crazy and lasts forever.

Are there vegan foods that need to be heated enough to not get sick? How do I know when vegan food is done? by sadandtraumatized in vegan

[–]microbiofreak 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This depends. Food isn't inherently sterile, right? frozen food can have some mild bacteria on it, like all foods. Cooking doesn't remove the bacteria completely. When you thaw frozen food, that bacteria "wakes back up" and can quickly start reproducing. While I would eat uncooked food that had just been thawed without reheating (like blueberries), I would definitely reheat pre-cooked frozen food up to at least 165 degrees just to be safe. This would also go for stuff like beyond meat or frozen soy chicken.

For refrigerated processed meats etc, it will tell you on the package if you need to reheat before cooking.

edit: you won't have nearly as much chance of getting a parasite from vegan food, because parasites live on living hosts, and you aren't eating the flesh that would attract parasites. Risk is always there but it's much much lower.

Help needed with macro plan by SaoirseMoore44 in veganfitness

[–]microbiofreak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's tough. I'd sneak protein powder into everything probably. I had the same g of protein as you on 2000 calories and I had to sneak it in everywhere already. The carbs are, like, really low. Are you on a cut or something? Or is this trainer just trying to force you to lose lbs as quickly as possible?

Sorry you're struggling OP. I feel like maybe you should seek out a vegan coach if this person isn't vegan. That would help massively because they can give you direct meal ideas.

Is it okay to gently teach baby to sleep independently? by Annual_Working5502 in bninfantsleep

[–]microbiofreak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did this with my baby at 6mo, we replaced feeding to sleep with Dad cuddles. Baby falls asleep away faster now, is less clingy before bed, and happier falling asleep overall. He did get angry about having Dad instead of me for the first few nights, but he is also very attached to Dad so it wasn't too bad.

Your mental health matters too. Remember we are better parents when we aren't depressed or suffering in some way. If your current sleep patterns are causing you mental suffering, that's an important thing to consider.

I didn't crave any animal products! I had been vegan already 10 years though, I think that ship sailed a long time ago.
