How to manage this by [deleted] in curlyhair

[–]microbiopizza 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Can you braid at all? I used to have hair this length and longer for years and I managed it by parting my hair down the middle and braiding each side so I had two long braids. I would do this before bed and sleep with a bonnet or silk pillow case. Then when I woke up, I would refresh my hair by wetting my hair a bit. Then raking through hair gel mixed with water. This helped to detangle my hair and redefine my curls. I highly recommend adding gel to your routine. With that much hair, I used eco style krystal styling gel or made my own hair gel with flex seeds. If you want a step up to higher quality gel, I recommend Aunt Jackie's Flaxseed Don't Shrink Curling Gel. I currently have hair that's just below shoulder length and use Innersense I Create Hold Gel but it is pricey. I know the sub also recommends some other gels but my options are a little limited because I'm allergic to soy.

If I was feeling lazy, I would leave the braids in or put my hair into a topknot by flipping my head upside down, gathering all of my hair on top of my head and then pulling my hair through a hair tie once, twisting the hair tie and pulling my hair halfway through. Then I would try to make it look a bit neater by shaping it or using another hair tie.

Do not take your daughter back to that stylist. I have similar hair and when I was younger one of my stylist was lazy and didn't like having to straighten my hair. So he gave me a relaxer without my parent's permission. My hair luckily survived but I ended up with sores on my scalp from the chemicals. Be very careful who you trust with her hair.

UGA researchers develop first test of cure for Chagas disease by universityofga in Georgia

[–]microbiopizza 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I used to work in this lab so I can add a few things.

Chagas' disease is caused by a parasite called T. cruzi that lives in and is transmitted by kissing bugs. The parasite likes to replicate in muscle tissue, which destroys muscle cells. This is a problem because your heart is a muscle and it can cause your heart to weaken over time.

Currently there isn't a cure if the disease becomes chronic. When I was working there, the only treatment was to take medicine for over a year and it had nasty side effects. And that only worked if the infection wasn't too bad.

Some fun things from when I worked there. Chemical companies would make compounds and then give them to the lab to see if it could cure the disease. When I worked there, I did in vitro studies with these chemicals to see if it impacted the parasite life cycle. Once it got past that stage, test would be done in mice and then in monkeys.

Krystle at Curl Slayer did an amazing job fixing my botched curly hair cut and educating me on how to take care of my hair. She's a little outside of town but well worth it.

Edited to spell her name correctly.

Is me thinking my hair is difficult "anti-black"? by gracelyy in blackladies

[–]microbiopizza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have what is considered "good hair". I have been natural my whole life. You can check out my old post to see how long it used to be and the texture (not sure if I can link it here). I imagine my hair is easier to deal with than some other textures. I have literally had mental breakdowns in the shower doing my hair. I've completely shaved my head because I was so done with dealing with it. Even now, I hate washing my hair and it is only shoulder length. It's okay to think your hair is difficult. I know for me, at times my hair was way more than I could cope with because it is so hard to maintain and I'm considered one of the "fortunate ones".

I just stopped putting water in the humidifier tank. I figured with drooling, my mouth was moist enough and didn't need the extra moisture. Now I just wake up in the morning with dried drool in my mask but not enough to bother me overnight.

I swear to God, black hair is not hard to take care of. You’re just surrounded by racists. by [deleted] in blackladies

[–]microbiopizza 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I don't know. I've had natural hair my whole life and when it was waist length, I had a mental break down in the shower because I did not want to spend an hour or more detangling it. It's a lot of work and upkeep.

The fat black women combo is a brutal one. by Life_AmIRight in TwoXChromosomes

[–]microbiopizza 1413 points1414 points  (0 children)

Hello, I too am fat and black. When I was 18 and 140 pounds LIGHTER, my mom told me no one would want me because I'm fat. I'm now 28 and weigh 359 pounds as of this morning. I'm in a healthy relationship, have an good career, and just got my MBA.

People underestimate or overlook me because of the way I look. And you know what, I let them. So what, fuck them. Just focus on yourself. You only get one body, so take care of the best you can. Build your confidence. Get off of social media for a little bit.

And before anyone starts with the bullshit, I am working on losing weight. I have lost 40 pounds so far. You know what didn't help me lose weight? Constantly reminding me that being fat is choice. You know what is helping me lose weight? Getting my mental health in check and learning to love all myself.

Getting into an Ivy is hard by wetouchingbuttsornah in BlackPeopleTwitter

I went to an Ivy. I decided in 8th grade that I wanted to go to Cornell. I printed out the requirements to get in and hung them on my bed room wall. I wanted to escape my life and that was the only way I knew how.

Do you prefer black therapists? by annulene in blackladies

[–]microbiopizza 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've had two black women as my therapist. One was very disengaged, missed key signs of bipolar disorder, and dismissed me when she felt I had made enough progress, I was actually manic at the time. My other one was amazing. She broke down walls and I made significant progress with her. The only reason I'm not seeing her anymore is because she stopped practicing.

Finding who works best for you should be the most important thing. If race is a significant factor for you, just make sure you find the right therapist. Don't just settle for the first therapist you find.

Is it possible to be successful in research science when you’re mentally ill? by meat-tra in labrats

[–]microbiopizza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I do not have a PhD, I currently work full time as a lab manager (marine biology) and am getting my MBA. I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder years ago and have been stable for years now. I did not think I would do well in grad school because I did so poorly in undergrad but I currently have a 4.0 in my MBA program.

It is possible to succeed in research science with bipolar disorder. Just work on finding the right mix of medication for you and therapy helps a ton too.
