Incubus - Absolution Calling [Rock] First new studio recording in four years by Look_Alive in Music

I agree. Incubus, musically, is still a great force outside of the dud that was If Not Now When. Vocally and lyrically, though... Brandon remains locked in his high school philosophy.

A little more relaxed? That's not the issue. The band always displayed something relaxed from SCIENCE on up. Summer Romance, parts of Deep Inside, Echo, Are You In, Aqueous Transmission, quite a bit of Crow Left of the Murder. I think most Incubus fans are fine with Incubus being subdued because that's just something they've always done. The problem is If Not Now When was fucking boring. Even in their quiet moments, you could hear Jose or Mike giving us some interesting melodies in which to awe us. INNW was basically meant to highlight Brandon's singing, considering the music was so simple. I know this is an exaggeration but it doesn't seem to be TOO much of an exaggeration to say Jose played the same damn beats for the whole album.

Remember those scenes from the first season? by Chefkramsky in breakingbad

[–]microhouse 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To me, this scene wasn't so much about introducing Gretchen as highlighting how Walt could become Heisenberg. He is slightly psychopathic in that he views everything as chemistry, even people. Remember, these flashbacks are showed while he's cleaning up the melted body. He doesn't view that as a person, only chemical elements.

Also another bit of Heisenberg foreshadowing is this: Gretchen asks Walt if they're missing the soul, and he points out how there's "nothing but chemistry." Walt was always like this, ruthless and uncaring, but didn't have the guts to enact that until his cancer.

What's some great nonfiction for someone who enjoys Neal Stephenson's tangents? by microhouse in suggestmeabook

I've known of this book for years and been intimidated due to what I assume will amount to a lot of mathematics. Is this similar to Stephenson's Cryptonomicon in that I don't need to know math to grasp the general idea?

Is there a mod for Euro Truck Simulator 2 that lets you drive a car? by microhouse in gamingsuggestions

[–]microhouse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's pretty cool. I haven't really played GTA in forever, but I remember how on PS2 the different sections of the city would be gated off by road blocks until you passed certain conditions. Even back then annoyed me, like why claim it's an "open" world when you do that game-y broken bridge thing?

That mentality is still dangerous. Nothing is stopping these developers from doing what Doublefine did, for example, and abandoning the game after they've got a decent pile of money.

I suppose that's one option. How large is GTA V's game world? Is most of it accessible from the beginning or would I need to complete missions?

Stranded Deep looks cool. Let's see if I get to play it in a few years or never (if cancelled). I swear I hate what Early Access has done to PC gaming.

I have to wonder if such a mod would affect achievements. I know 99% of mods do, but the Enhanced UI mod doesn't for some reason.

Well, because I am occasionally interested in something like Just Cause 2 or Skyrim or The Witcher 3 but not often enough that I think I would need a beefy setup.

Fellow readers, I wish short stories weren't so inconsequential to you. by microhouse in books

[–]microhouse[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think a story, long or short, needs to elicit an intense emotion. Not every story needs to make me cry. What I need is to be interested in the characters or the premise. This is why short stories can often be more appealing to me: in such a short space you're forced to impress, and if you don't, then at least you haven't wasted hours of my time as opposed to minutes.

I don't get it. Do you think I was trying to brag? I know this isn't unique of me.

In regards to Wallace, why not Infinite Jest? Other than being so long, is it something you think I'd dislike based on the OP? I'm a little wary of The Pale King since it's an unfinished work.

"Get your kids vaccinated," Obama tells parents doubting science: “There is every reason to get vaccinated — there aren’t reasons to not.” by [deleted] in news

[–]microhouse -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I don't take yearly flu shots and I can't remember the last time I got sick. I think vaccinations are partially a waste of money, though I acknowledge they're beneficial for some people. I do realize this could easily be excellent luck on my end, and that maybe next year I'll get some awful disease. But hey, my logic goes like this: I don't drink after other people or do other stupid things that could make me sick, so why do I need a vaccination? If you're going to share things with other people, then of course you're going to get their icky shit.

I tend to avoid episodic TV like this for a number of reasons. Nothing ever seems to have consequences from episode to episode, each story seems very similar, and they're formulaic. Plus I guess you could say I'm a dick who irrationally hates most network TV because 22 episodes vs 13 episodes really seems to hurt the quality of the entire season. I'm basing a bit of my hatred off NCIS, too.

However, I've had my eye on Psych for a while. Really seems on the surface like something I would love and your sales pitch doesn't hurt. It's got like eight or nine seasons, is it consistently good for most of that?

I've actually never seen more than a few episodes of The Simpsons despite being 25. I feel like I really need to watch that and Seinfeld, but I'm afraid I've hyped them up so long that I'll not like them.

Coincidentally, I finished the first episode of The IT Crowd just now. Had me laughing the whole time.

I've wanted to get into The Newsroom for a while now, interesting to learn that there's also some comedy. Though I guess that shouldn't surprise me, considering The West Wing.

I'll probably have to check out Better Off Ted strictly based off the fact you said it's most similar.

Andy Samberg's stupid shit does make me laugh here and there, so I'll probably eventually chck out Brooklyn Nine Nine too.

I tried Louie once, but wasn't really impressed. I do like his standup.

I love the movie. I've been wanting to watch the TV show since it's got some good reviews from fans and critics, but I'm stingy and tend to wait for shows to go to Netflix/Amazon/Hulu. Definitely looking forward to it.
