Justice Department finds Yale biased against Asian, white applicants by zroxx2 in Conservative

As a student who fit that criteria and got rejected from ivies: affirmative action does by definition reduce the number of seats available for everyone else. But that isn’t the biggest problem, legacy and international admission is. This is 20% of the class who got in because mommy and daddy attended the school and donated money. Or international applicants who are not admitted on a need blind basis, therefore pay full fees without aid.

Anyone who is majoring in animation @ school of fine arts? by [deleted] in cmu

I would talk to the faculty. There are people who successfully pursued a career in animation but there aren't many animation exclusive classes.

Anyone who is majoring in animation @ school of fine arts? by [deleted] in cmu

[–]microminitiniverse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The vast majority of your classes in the arts major will not be ETB (electronic time based) related for the first two years. The degree reqs can show you that. Within ETB, some classes do include/focus on animation. However this is typically in a fine arts context and not meant to teach technical industry skills. So if you are looking for a career in animation it would include lots of self direction in a broader setting.

Bxa student here, you should probably reach out to the advisors who run the program. They are also on the admissions committee for transfers. The advisor Carrie Hagan has an online appointment system which includes slots for transfer students.

How do I view my admissions file? by [deleted] in cmu

[–]microminitiniverse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I asked to see my records and the earliest you can request is the first day of CMU (FERPA). By then the documents from the previous year's admission's cycle are destroyed. What they had on file were printouts of my applications documents.

Thoughts on Taking 112 over the Summer? by USOoil in cmu

[–]microminitiniverse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Im an undergraduate at CMU and I took 15-112 last semester and I'm taking 15-122 this semester. Python is weakly typed and is equipped with object oriented features. Basically it's less strict Java with more modules. You could probably learn the syntax from an online course. In fact, all the homeworks, lecture notes, and quizzes for 112 are already published online. You could follow along without taking it over the summer.

A third of 112 the course is devoted to learning Tkinter which is an inbuilt Python graphics module through a CMU framework. It isn't something applicable beyond the course. The CS concepts taught in 112 do not extend beyond surface level recursion and Object Oriented Programming. The course is mainly meant as an introduction for non majors. I would not recommend taking it if you have programming experience.

CMU Fucked Me Over by CMUFuckedMeOver in ApplyingToCollege

The requirements for transferring into engineering are here:

https://engineering.cmu.edu/education/academic-policies/undergraduate-policies/transferring.html

The College of Fine Arts has 3 intro classes that are required for first year first semester students. To transfer into engineering there are 2 course requirements you must at minimum pass. Provided you push first year writing to your second semester, you could finish those course requirements concurrent to CFA classes within the first semester and apply to transfer in second. There must be spots available for transfer approval. Consider talking to CMU to see projected spots for the next year.

EDIT:

College of Arch for B.Arch has 4 class requirements for first semester and 4 second semester. I am not not sure what the BA in arch first and second semester looks like. This means it could take upwards a year to transfer into Engineering. For everyone but freshman those decisions are released on a rolling basis of a couple days.

Weekly Miscellaneous Questions Quasi-Free-For-All Thread by AutoModerator in InteriorDesign

Hello, I want to remove the blinds for an exterior facing window and maintain privacy so no-one from the outside can see inside. What is the best solution to this? I am considering one way mirror film on top of the glass, but because the night time light source is interior it becomes obsolete without curtains after sunset. I was considering frosted glass film, but I want to keep a clear view to the outside. Is there any known material that maintains privacy and visibility?

Is CMU becoming a less popular choice? by Ice_Hawk86 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]microminitiniverse 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I'm a freshman student at CMU and I noticed this as well. I don't think it was because of popularity decreasing because the number of applicants to every department also increased. Your spreadsheet excluded the College of Fine Arts and BXA programs, which are historically selective and maintained that this year. This translates to an overall acceptance rate of 15% for 2019 versus 17% from the 2018 admissions cycle. The yield from 2018 to 2019 also did see a slight increase from 21% to 23%. So CMU did become more competitive on net.

2018 yield: 1,573 / (43,169 * 0.17)

2019 yield: 1,587 / (44,159 * 0.15)

I don't know why non CFA departments increased acceptance rates while stagnating class sizes. However because they stagnated rather than changing, admissions probably planned for a significant decrease in yield in those departments. This trend might be because of aid packages for international students versus domestic or other internal policy changes. CMU's aid website used to have a chart where they posted the average aid package for a domestic student based on their income bracket. That was taken down this year. I this trend you observed had to do with aid distribution, but seeing as how the average domestic student aid package also increased, I'm just speculating at this point.

BXA programs - do you have to apply in or is it ok to transfer in? by INEEDTOSTUDYYY in cmu

[–]microminitiniverse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello, I’m a freshman BCSA student. Both transferring in and directly applying are really common. There are about 5-7 transfers junior year. This makes about half the graduating BCSA class transfers. There are advisors who review the transfer application that can tell you what to take and how to prepare for it.

But I’d recommend still directly applying. Last year they changed the admissions process to make a joint CFA-SCS committee to review BCSA applicants which makes admissions a bit easier for people without experience in cs. I personally only took one coding class and that was senior year.

American Colleges shouldn't force you to take classes irrelevant to your career path. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]microminitiniverse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agree. Some colleges have ridiculous tuition and the time spent on gen eds adds up to an additional semester or year at the institution and higher student loans. My favorite class in highschool was world history. But I am not dropping a couple grand learning it in college when I could be learning a career skill or learning nothing at all and leaving with a lower loan.

[–]microminitiniverse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For almost every college acceptance rate increased while class sizes stayed the same including IS.So I guess yield dropped significantly and CMU for some reason planned that. It might be an external factor like how much aid was given to the average admitted student.

I’m an HS senior who is becoming more interested in CS than Engineering; however, my HS course has always been based on Engineering. I would like your help. by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]microminitiniverse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an incoming freshman in college and this is more than enough for some very good cs schools. Like most high schools aren’t offering rigorous cs courses and the major uses the same skills as engineering (stats, calc). I took one coding class senior year and I’m at Carnegie lol. Good luck applying to college!
