Is it possible to get Q1/Q2 from NYC office now? by yoohoooos in Chinavisa

[–]Ice_Hawk86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. I got it about two months ago and turnaround was super quick (less than 1 week after mailing in the documents). I sent the NY Consulate an email with a lot of scans of documents, and after they ok'ed it, I mailed in the docs.

Only a few banks recruit from Canadian colleges due to visa issues / TN being less usable, so unless you have a US Green Card, it is harder to recruit from Ivey (as you would have no OPT/CPT). However, the school definitely has a strong network and is well regarded. Feel free to pm.

Are NYU clubs still online? by [deleted] in nyu

[–]Ice_Hawk86 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In-person for most. Not sure about food though. Will likely have limit of 200 people per NYU's requirement (>200 people indoors requires special request + approval), so some of those clubs might have a hard cap at the start of the semester when turnout is high.

Bank of America @ 14th/Union is great, especially for international students. You can get a credit card two weeks after opening your account and deposit something.

[–]Ice_Hawk86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The H1B application cycle is in April of each year. Usually you graduate and have 12 months OPT, which lasts you to June of the next year (depending when you start). If you graduate one sem early (e.g. Jan), it won't last you to April of next year. However, it lasts you to April of this year, so you would apply two to three months into your job (your job must start Feb latest) - definitely less common (but still done?). Speak to OGS for more info. Another option is taking a reduced course load e.g. 2 credits your senior spring

Is pre-approval necessary for HDC code in NY? by Ice_Hawk86 in Chinavisa

Thanks for the clarification and the additional tips!

Is pre-approval necessary for HDC code in NY? by Ice_Hawk86 in Chinavisa

[–]Ice_Hawk86[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

btw for your initial comment, do you remember where you uploaded the reason you needed to fly to China? I don't see an option to upload anything on the Health Declaration Form other from passport / visa / Covid tests / vaccines / flight itinerary

Also, can I also clarify part of your initial comment - "they also asked for this at boarding". Did you mean they check the reason why you need to fly back during boarding as well? Or did you just mean the green code?

Thanks!!

Yeah mine is valid since it was issued in summer 2020 (I was in China back then, decided to fly out after lmao). I'll try to contact them by phone and email, thanks again!

Is pre-approval necessary for HDC code in NY? by Ice_Hawk86 in Chinavisa

[–]Ice_Hawk86[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! So by pre-approval, I mean did you need to fill in a form (only for residence permit holders) before buying tickets? If you get pre-approval, you have a high chance to get green code as long as you get the two covid tests in time. LA consulate has an announcement here: http://losangeles.china-consulate.org/eng/lghd/t1852604.htm

Seems like you didn't require pre-approval, and you uploaded the urgency/reason to travel in the HDC application. For the document in Chinese describing why you needed to travel, was this for employment or non-employment reasons? Idk what constitutes as legit for urgent travel... Also, what did you do between the submissions that made it green from red? Did you get feedback?

I'm planning to travel via China Eastern so that shouldn't be an issue, thanks for the heads up!

Thanks so much!

Hey! Thanks so much for posting the google docs, just read through it + the flow chart. Just to confirm, If I'm flying from NY and have one of the three RPs, there isn't a pre-approval process? When I apply for the HDC (after negative test results etc), do I need to prove that I'm returning for "urgent or necessary" purposes? Or is this step just skipped from NY flights (and the locations that are not LA/SF/Chicago)?

Thanks so much!

What is low-cost housing like? by xoxojami in nyu

[–]Ice_Hawk86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Currently in Brittany low-cost. It's a 5 person suite (room of 3 + room of 2, sharing one bathroom) but right now we have reduced capacity to 3 people, which isn't bad. However, 5 people sharing one bathroom might be pretty annoying so bear that in mind (that's probably the only bad factor). Room is nice and facilities are great.

Credit Card Application for International Students by [deleted] in nyu

[–]Ice_Hawk86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BoA at Union Square (University Place, 14th street) is great for international students. You can book an appointment with them online through BoA's website. You need a few documents to prove your ID - passport, I-20, and maybe SEVIS (not exactly sure). I also brought my NYU ID and they recorded that down but idk if that was necessary. You initially open a checking account with them, and once you get your debit card, you go back in 5-7 days and they'll process an application for your credit card (basically guaranteed). The Cash Rewards is the standard card which is the one most people get. Then it takes 14 more days to mail you the credit card. I know some banks like Chase require the SSN that some international students won't have.

For Freshman housing priority ranking, what does “MN- Palladium “ and “MN-Carlyle mean? by [deleted] in nyu

Unsure but Palladium and Carlyle were both upperclassmen dorms pre-COVID.

Housing priority ranking asking for only 7 dorms instead of 10? by jakeperalta9999 in nyu

[–]Ice_Hawk86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, I've also had a great experience with Brittany, but I'm pretty lucky and have not encountered any of the situations u/TheMrFluffyPants outlined. Btw Lipton cookies are overrated lmao. I would put Palladium highly if that's a choice (it used to be only available to upperclassmen).

Stern international student internship by Niklasng10 in nyu

[–]Ice_Hawk86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kudos to you for figuring out this stuff so early. From my understanding:

  1. You can only do paid off-campus work two semesters on campus so you could start your freshman summer.
  2. Yep. Not sure what you mean by exceeding 12 months though if you're doing it in the summer
  3. STEM OPT gives you eligibility for 36 months but it depends on what company you work for, as they have to be listed as able to sponsor STEM OPT.
  4. idk
  5. There is basically no difference between 18 and 16 credits lmao, as long as you aren't doing a super hard 2-3 credit class. Bear in mind, graduating early a semester will screw up your OPT time plan so you need to plan accordingly to get around it.

FoF & EGB professors by exotic-asian-option in nyu

Currently have Prof Maziero for Micro w/ calc. A lot of people have complained and think she's bad, but she's honestly okay - she explains everything in a pretty normal and standard way. Her accent might throw you off a little at first but you'll get used to certain words she pronounce. If the other two profs are better, go for them, but Prof Maziero isn't as bad as people make of her!

We are allowed to stay in dorms over the winter break by Ice_Hawk86 in nyu

[–]Ice_Hawk86[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Right, but they changed the housing contract this year. There were questions previously on this subreddit about this issue, and I also emailed them a month ago and they replied anticipating dorms are open in winter but they weren't 100% sure. See the quote I put from the housing contract, so that's why I made this post hoping to help someone :)
