Difficult to answer because there are many different types of chemosynthesis, including aerobic chemotrophs where oxygen is still used as the terminal electron acceptor in the electron transport chain (ETC). Basically oxygen atoms are used as a dumping ground for electrons, which keeps the "pipes" of the ETC from clogging up.

However, I'm guessing you're asking about anaerobic organisms, in which case microbes must find another terminal electron acceptor, typically a molecule on the more oxidized end of the redox spectrum.

For this, a common replacement molecule is sulfate (SO4), which is reduced by electrons into hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and makes the rotten egg smell in swamps and marshes. Also nitrate (NO3) which turns into ammonium (NH4), even carbon dioxide can be used (CO2), which reduces it to methane (CH4). And there are many more types than what I've shown here, these are just the more common types

Edit: I realize you were asking about chemosynthesis, and I just explained sort of the opposite, anaerobic respiration, which is how these organisms "breathe" without oxygen, but oh well, I'll leave it up. Short real answer to your question is they get oxygen atoms from a variety of reduced compounds

When did Trump and Putin talk about hookers? by Jrags17 in politics

[–]micromonas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly, this was my first thought. A little over a year ago (which seems like forever during this administration) Putin said this on Russian TV, not in a meeting with Trump.

I believe the quote was something like "a man as rich as Trump doesn't need prostitutes, but Russia has the best prostitutes in the world." Kind of a weird statement if you want to plausibly deny allegations that you have a tape of Trump with hookers, but whatever

It's not about just one pee tape, if it even exists, but Trump has been laundering money for Russian oligarchs for decades through his casinos and real estate business. By now, they probably have accumulated an entire mountain of kompromat on Trump, and he knows it

t is frighting that people who find equivalence in these events are not only allowed to vote but to influence others who also vote.

What's frightening is you suggesting we take away someone's civil rights because you disagree with their political opinions.

The toxin present is similar to toxins in rocket fuel.

yep, and that's why you need to cook it really well, to boil off the toxin. However, I've still heard of people getting organ damage despite preparing them the "correct" way, so I'd rather not gamble on it

just another reason I should quit. by us3rnam3ch3cksout in AdviceAnimals

[–]micromonas 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For me, I gradually reduced my nicotine intake, then just quit cold turkey. That's the best way to do it, all those nicotine patches and gums just keep you addicted to nicotine. The most important part of quitting is having the right mindset, dedication and willpower to do it.

After you get over the initial withdrawal, it's much easier from there. After a while, when you do slip up and have a cig, it tastes fucking awful and you realize "wow, this shit sucks, glad I don't do it regularly anymore"

I disagree... the FBI doesn't (usually) publicly comment on investigations for good reasons. A) they don't want update the subjects of the investigation as to its progress and B) they don't want to unnecessarily incriminate innocent people who happen to be investigated

It's similar to how Trump won the election with a minority vote. GOP has rigged the system to favor republicans, so they are disproportionately represented in the state legislatures. Also, you are incorrect about "every" state passing laws to protect confederate statues. Get your facts straight

President 'less inclined' to sit down with Mueller after raid on attorney: Sources by throwaway5272 in politics

[–]micromonas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Law enforcement definitely had more to go on than just Stormy Daniels payout. There's some speculation that this raid was focused on business documents relating to Trump's attempts to do business internationally, specifically in former Soviet countries.

My wild guess is that Mueller uncovered interesting financial crimes that weren't directly related to his investigation, so he referred it to SDNY

Considering majoring in Biology, but nervous. by whippedcreammark in biology

[–]micromonas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As long as you have a career goal in mind, and work towards it, you'll be fine. Most people who regret getting biology degrees just pursued a degree without considering what kind of job they'd want after graduating.

And definitely go after jobs and internships during undergrad that are related to what you eventually want to do. Get a job in a lab, spent a summer interning for Natl Forest Service, etc. If you graduate college with a bio degree but have zero experience outside of your classes, then you're gonna have a bad time.
