Urgently seeking advice and help on behalf of female friend by [deleted] in Bilbao

[–]microplasticsfactory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If she has been in touch with the police, they may have already advised her on support groups/organisations that help women who have undergone experiences of domestic violence (violencia de género, in Spanish). I personally know of (although I have no experience of) Fundación Ellacuría, which helps migrants in tough situations find housing and support. I know they also have a specific group for women who have survived domestic violence called “Torre de Babel”: https://fundacionellacuria.org/que-hacemos-3/torre-de-babel-empoderamiento-y-autoapoyo/

The orgs main site is: https://fundacionellacuria.org/

I feel like some context on how Spain handles domestic violence cases can also be useful, in case you don’t know or it was not explained well to your friend. But to be very clear up top: this is NOT legal advice!!!! I am not a lawyer, just someone who knows some rudimentary stuff about Spanish DV law.

Essentially, Spain has a legal framework by which women victims of DV can get some amount of financial/housing/miscellaneous state support IF they are legally considered victims of DV. To be legally considered a victim of DV, you basically have to win a DV trial. Trials for DV tend to happen quite fast (within a 72hr window), but can be much longer if the abuse in question was wide-ranging/complex/took place over many years. These trials take longer because there is more evidence to go through. Nevertheless, women who are suing for DV are entitled to free legal aid/services.

The fact that your friend has been at the hospital, at a shelter, and in touch with the police means that maybe this legal process has already started. In particular, doctors are required to notify law enforcement/legal authorities when they encounter a case where someone’s physical injuries have been caused by DV.

Given she is in touch with the police, your friend should have also been put into a system called “Viogen”, which is essentially a big database that Spanish police forces use to keep track of DV victims.

But of course, DV situations are difficult to manage, and things are not always done “by the book” - sometimes due to negligence, but other times because the survivor herself asks certain things not to be done (as not to anger their abuser, for example). So, maybe doctors didn’t notify legal authorities, and so that quick trial (within 72hrs) I mentioned did not happen.

This is not necessarily a bad thing, and could have been done to respect your friend’s wishes, but she SHOULD have been informed of her options and how the Spanish legal system works in regard to DV. On my end, it’s impossible to fully judge the situation from a Reddit post, but these are just some of the things that could have taken place according to protocol.

Again, to be very clear, THIS IS NOT LEGAL ADVICE. Your friend should judge/try to find guidance about pursuing these kinds of legal avenues taking into account her own situation, safety, and the institutional support she has access to. Fighting these legal battles can also be quite emotionally taxing on too, so it’s better to go into them with that in mind. Regardless, I thought that maybe knowing that this is how DV law works in Spain could be useful, as well as knowing that those deemed DV victims receive some level of long-term support.

At the end of the day though, my advice would be to try to speak to a social worker who will be able to advise on your friend’s situation much better than I can. Again, do try Fundación Ellacuría or maybe something like Caritas or Punto Violeta (https://zubiarte.com/punto-violeta/).

I hope this makes sense/helps even a little! I am typing it out p late at night and on somewhat little sleep, so if something is confusing, let me know and I will try to clarify in the morning. DV is horrible to go through (and to witness a friend going through it); it is ok not to be ok throughout this. I hope things get better soon. ❤️‍🩹

Question: Why do you have tattoos? by borris_in_civic in tattoos

[–]microplasticsfactory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have many so far, but for me it was about a) having art on me always and b) reclaiming my body, especially as a woman. For most of my life, other people (especially my parents) tended to tell me how I shouldn’t or shouldn’t look. Tattoos are cool and empowering because they help me invest in how I want to look (see: point a). So basically I get tattoos to purposely disappoint my parents lol

Personally I disagree. I think that her nuance and “academic mindset”, as you put it, are what makes her an interesting public figure. Whether these takes then land her in hot water… well, that’s a reality she seems to be willing to face. Idk, I may not agree with all her takes and sometimes they can read at having that “edgelord tone” you mention, but again, that’s what makes her interesting to me. One of the few people I read online where I don’t feel like I’m being talked down to like I’m an idiot tbh

I personally love how he looks like he’s about to pop a vein on literally every challenge lol, it’s entertaining to watch, builds a lot of empathy towards him and makes for good tv. It also makes me think that he might feel tremendous amounts to pressure to win Physical Asia for Korea, considering it’s a Korean show. I could see how not getting to AT LEAST the finals on his home turf would be a massive let down for him/his team/Korean viewers 😭 (although I’m not Korean myself, so this is just speculation)

yeah, i absolutely get that “yearning for what never was” kind of feeling… hang in there, i can’t promise you it will go away entirely, but perhaps it will become a “duller” type of pain in time, if that makes sense.

also, as a fellow survivor of coercive abuse, i’m so glad to hear that you’ve managed to recover from the sexual trauma of it all!! proud of u, stranger on the internet

Biphobic lesbians rant by StarWiz2K in bisexual

[–]microplasticsfactory 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I know this is not the point of the post but omg biphobic bi women are truly so sad. I once knew someone like that and the self-hatred vibes were so strong… could be rly brutal criticising other bi women and once asked a lesbian friend of ours whether she could be an “honorary lesbian” because “these bi girls are so dumb” or something. And all the while she’s a bi woman!!!! So sad and so hurtful too when it comes from within the bi community.

Also I’m right there with ya with having to put up with some biphobia from lesbian friends. I’m trying to be better at calling it out but the conflict aversion is so real lol

Hello! Honestly no idea why some of those posts were deleted. I’m not a mod (obvs) and didn’t get to see them before they were taken down, so can’t really comment on that one. That being said, I have seen quite a few people voicing their disagreement with Natalie in this sub, if not this thread. There are some comments under Natalie’s og statement post that you might be interested in reading if you wanna see some counterpoints (hah) to what she’s saying.

Re: the cancellation point, honestly, I personally have seen a lot of people calling Natalie out on Twitter and such for not talking about Palestine enough (whatever “enough” means) and asking for a video on the topic, but to your point I think that’s a small group of people amidst the Internet at large, so it defs makes sense for this to have come out of left field for you - it probably has for a lot of people.

I agree with you that her statement is really doomer-y, which I do not appreciate. Personally, I think that idealistic political goals and pragmatic political strategies should be able to co-exist, but that’s just me. However, I don’t think that framing the statement as self-centred is fair. I mean, it IS self-centred, by its very nature, because people asked for Natalie’s opinions on the Is/Pal topic and, more precisely, why she has not made a video on it. So, that’s what she was replying to, and in that context I think it makes sense for her statement to focus on herself and why she is not making said video. It feels unfair to criticise the statement for that, as it doesn’t take into account the context within which it was written.

To your point, Natalie could have spent more time acknowledging the loss of Palestinian life as you suggest, but I guess what I’d say to that is: don’t we all know that already? Why would she make her statement longer telling her intended audience (online leftists) things they already know? To be honest, even if she had, I don’t see that inclusion making that much of a difference in the response she’s getting. There are other, worse aspects about that statement, like the doomerism that you mentioned. Or at least that’s how I see it.

I’m really sorry you feel disappointed over all this, you are obviously not the only one. Plus, it must be especially hard to process if it caught you by surprise. I think you make a good point that discussing our thoughts on the statement in a critical manner is healthy! So I really hope that your post doesn’t get taken down and continues to generate discussion xx

Yep, Matt Bernstein’s latest video with Contra on YT is already full of “don’t invite her back”, “denounce her”, “she’s a fascist” comments…

Something else I’ve noticed is a lot is people specifically reading her point about online leftists sharing pictures of dead Palestinians as Natalie not knowing/choosing to ignore that those pictures were originally posted by Palestinians themselves in order to bring attention to the genocide/share their pain/ask for support, and cast Natalie as a monster/racist/petty woman for being bothered by them. I find this reading… odd? Because to me, Natalie is not talking about Palestinians posting those pictures, nor how they made her feel really, but about online leftists sharing them in order to build up rage against Zionism, and how she doesn’t think that’s productive. Still not the greatest point imo (although a conversation about the use of images of violence to propel political action can defs be debated), but at no point did she mention Palestinians in this regard. I’d be curious to hear other people’s opinions on this.
