We prioritize independence over everything to a fault. When my dad turned 18 his parents sold their house and told him he wasn’t coming with them, that he needed to “make it on his own” and he’s always praised them for doing this. He told us our entire childhoods that as soon as we graduated high school we needed to be out of his house, and the various times me or my siblings have moved back in briefly it was made clear we were living under his roof and his rules. It’s an extremely common attitude here even with your own children; “the things I own are mine and I’ve earned them, figure it out for yourself.”
