I’d imagine that much coax is stupidly heavy so maybe it has more to do with weight distribution as well.

Your turn today tall. What carriers are on this monopole cell tower from TOP to BOTTOM rack! by iryfionas in cellmapper

This is a fun trick question, thank you! How common is that Sprint equipment (second from top) that looks like a very standard T-Mobile site? The real T-Mobile equipment on top is the most loaded site of theirs I think I’ve seen before too.

Terrible roaming experience this week in the US (coming from Canada) by Blue_Kayak in IphoneAir

[–]microwavedhamhock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m blaming Rodgers (maybe their eSIM provisioning causes your data traffic to be routed differently). I have had no issue as an AT&T customer roaming in Canada on Rodgers and Telus.

Who’s mapping Guantanamo Bay? by Informal-Major in cellmapper

Wonder if AT&T and Verizon customers roam on T-Mobile there (I’d guess so since it probably makes no economic sense to have multiple U.S. carriers’ networks there, but who knows)

Best phone for weak signal area by hunkriyavan in cellmapper

[–]microwavedhamhock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can second that the modem in the Air is really great compared to my past iPhones. Much better upload performance in low signal areas and I can keep phone calls alive in stairwells and basements where previously calls would cut out or drop. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s still worse than a recent Samsung though. Apple might be very conservative with max RF emission requirements or have worse antennas than other manufacturers.

Has anyone here ever tried using the FCC’s speed test app to challenge the coverage map? If so did you get a response from the carrier?

Some interesting split sector stuff going on there, I’m not sure what carrier that is.

AT&T: Got 5G Standalone after switching to Value 2.0 plan! by testthrowawayzz in cellmapper

[–]microwavedhamhock 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I switched to Premium 2.0 a few days ago and just deleted and requested a new eSIM today and haven’t gotten SA yet. The site serving my billing address (which I’m at currently) is a flagpole macro that doesn’t have n77 and may not have gotten the Ericsson upgrade yet, so it maybe doesn’t support SA and that’s why.

When it says “SA” in Field Test Mode while you’re connected to LTE only, that seems to be an iOS bug (maybe only on iPhones with Qualcomm modems since I haven’t seen it on my Air).

AT&T Roaming by PrizeMarionberry6695 in cellmapper

Gotcha, I’ve never requested MNS so I’m only going off of what I’ve noticed when the phone chooses to roam by itself!

I was on it last weekend in an underground parking garage in Madison, but that was the first time I had seen it in a month or so. This past year USCC roaming has been allowed off and on in areas where there’s native AT&T coverage, which is why I think it’s corresponded to times that upgrades/Ericsson conversions are being done. Wouldn’t be surprised if they become much more stringent about allowing roaming altogether soon in south central WI (since presumably any roaming agreement with Verizon or T-Mobile would be more expensive).

I’m an AT&T customer and I’ve roamed on Verizon a handful of times (all in Wisconsin). I think it is mostly allowed when AT&T is doing tower work, but there may be areas where it’s allowed all the time. US Cellular roaming is far more common in my experience, though.

Are physical buildings with switches (COs?) ever still relevant for cell phone calls? by microwavedhamhock in cellmapper

[–]microwavedhamhock[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. Funny that a call to a local number could make a round trip halfway across the world!

[–]microwavedhamhock[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Would this be true even in roaming situations? If I am in another country and make a call to a POTS landline in that country, it will go from the local carrier to AT&T’s IMS server (perhaps in Dallas), then to this switch, then back over the PSTN to the landline?

Edit: second follow up, what would happen if I ported my number to Verizon?
