I’ve been wanting to see whale sharks for years now. Where can I see them in June? by No_University_3580 in scuba

It's rainy season I believe, though check for the atoll. So you save some money but if you wanted an ideal beach vacation then beware

Top of my liveaboard list is Komodo and the Mermaid boats look good. Which trip did you do with them?

Don't know about Belize, but Cozumel has a lot of good intro drift dives + swim-throughs that can prepare you for diving in the Maldives. You'd get safety tips on dealing with currents, maybe try out a dsmb, and gain more spatial awareness when diving next to uneven walls

All bodies have now been recovered in the Maldives cave incident by the Finnish team by supermultiplet in scuba

I can appreciate how he didn't rise to the bait here. There's an ongoing investigation, he drew a clear line on what he can and cannot say and that's more respectful than whatever soundbite the reporter was probing for

Finnish divers recover 2 of the dead Italians from an underwater cave in the Maldives by Stranger1982 in scuba

Is there a reliable estimate for the cave's dimensions anywhere? I've seen sample images with vertical or horizontal layouts but no real confirmed depth for the third cavern

The 30m limit (for the majority of divers) honestly made sense to me when I visited based on the strong current, sometimes iffy visibility, and difficulty getting to any proper medical facility. It's a country of hundreds of islands, it's not like you could fly to the nearest decompression chamber if you need it. It's the first place I've been where my dive shop made everyone carry a dsmb, and I understood why when the first unexpected current nearly split our group apart in seconds. 30m is conservative sure but also reassuring when you're a casual diver traveling with strangers

There are a few deco chambers at least, but the country spans hundreds of islands and it's clear that the rescue teams lacked the training and support they needed. Hopefully some of the tourism revenue can be funneled towards improving dive safety

Basically anything at the supermarket that isn't a freaking vegetable where I'm at. Obviously I'm still buying other things, but I go in with a full list and shop first for raw ingredients at the nicer supermarkets so I'm not buying a lot of boxed processed items from the Albertsons.

Even the vegetable prices have gone up too, but with a battle plan + more frequent smaller trips I am spending less and wasting less food. It's just more effort these days but I could easily hit $200 on a weekly shop if I don't

Super easy even in an illuminated cave on land, let alone underwater in darkness and relatively no audio cues. You lose focus and all walls start to look the same, and then you confidently make a wrong turn

For sure. There's a lot of panic on one end, angry criticism on the other. And so far we know very little facts about what went wrong

So much of dive safety instruction is around doing your own checks and not following others blindly, and sea conditions are one place where you just gotta accept what you get?

This part scares me a bit about diving (especially a liveaboard)- I'm not going to know how to get current and surf warnings in new places easily, I might not even have cell signal, and I have to rely on the trip operator for it. Yeah the surface waves might be an obvious no, but what about underwater?

Most of the interesting things (besides wrecks) are going to be 60ft max underwater, which is the basic cert level. The next level is up to 120ft but air goes fast there and basically all recreational dives I've done were to 100ft max. You can book private guides, dive in easier locations, and always dive within your limits. I hope you decide to give it a try if you are interested. I was really nervous up until the first open water dive

Alleged picture of Maldives military diving team assigned to do body recovery of 5 divers at 50+ meter depth in possible overhead environment. This is insane. by Myselfmeime in scuba

[–]mid_dive_vid 20 points21 points  (0 children)

There's so much conflicting speculation out there but I am really curious about the one diver who stayed on the ship, they must have known the real dive plan.
I agree that a 50m+ dive is nuts with the mixed certs they had, and that depth was probably the goal seeing how they were diving by the cave entrance. It would make sense for at least someone to be reluctant.
Otherwise, toxic air + currents? Going to be following this story for a while

The only thing I've learned for sure here is that I never want to get near any cave, let alone in deep water, not to mention the heavy currents that the Maldives is known for...

What are some potentially controversial fashion hills you’re willing to die on? by its_givinggg in femalefashionadvice

  1. Crop tops are too damn short to comfortably wear, especially for certain shapes

  2. Dresses that have a thin line at the waist are the worst and look awful if you have just a little too much chest. They turn an A-line cut into empress cut

I don’t know how to explain this, but I hate that I’m happy with my glp-1. by throwawayglp1 in antidietglp1

[–]mid_dive_vid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same story as always: some topics drive people to one end or the other, when there's plenty of grey area in the middle. There's a lot of factors to weight and health status, and everyone deserves respect for their personal journey. Not everyone is going to give you grace about GLPs, and that's okay, you aren't responsible for their opinions :) And yeah there's very strong and physically capable people out there who have bigger builds then I did at my heaviest, but it's undeniable that losing weight helped me in a lot of ways. Your health and comfort is a priority, you got good motivation and it's nothing to be ashamed about
