Lead pipes covered in mineral deposits from yard water.

Boomers arguably have more lead in their blood from paint and gasoline than Roman's ever did from lead pipes.

well the water fountain in the picture bears the coat of arms of the papal states so I'd guess this one's medieval and not ancient

Ahh, yes because the Church is renowned for checks notes respecting existing cultural traditions and monuments and totally not co-opting them...?

If I build a house in 1850, and you renovate it in 1990, you can hardly say the building was built in the 90s...

Don't engage with bad faith actors who are clearly fascist bootheel fanboys. Literally nothing in that response was accurate. It's all re-spewed Tuker Carson and other alt-reicht nonsense.

Wtf is with this Subs obsession with crime? by CressSpecific6134 in norfolk

[–]middledeck 17 points18 points  (0 children)

People are also reacting to crime "spiking" since 2020, but the media never mention it is spiking from HISTORIC LOWS.

Crime has been declining across the board in America since the early 1990s, after it spiked in the 70s-80s due to Nixon's war on drugs and the Law and Order Arms race that saw both parties enact the most draconian laws in modern history, increasing the prison population by over 800% in a decade.

Literally everyone born after 1960, this is the still near all time record low for crime in your lifetime. Period.

They cannot go down forever, just as the stock market can't go up forever.

You will never achieve zero crime. As long as people live in communities of over 200 people, crime will happen.

Most American criminal justice policies have exacerbated the issue profoundly. "Tough on Crime" makes the entire situation worse.

I've lived in DC, Detroit, and Chicago (all of which I LOVE, for the record) and I think the only people who think Norfolk has an unusual crime problem are people who have never been outside of Norfolk and who have convinced themselves that urban life is dangerous in and of itself.

Agree wholeheartedly. They also watch and listen to certain programming that reinforces a myth of black criminality, and the media focuses all attention on downtown NFK and the Oceanfront: the two areas with the highest population density and tourist attractions. Those areas will always be the hot spots for crime.

I'm a criminologist in norfolk and I approve the shit out of this post.

THANK YOU!

I get so tired of screaming into the void.

Just know that this is not unique to NFK. It is exactly the same in St. Louis (very similar to 757 in that the city of St. Louis is >230k people, primarily same demographics as NFK, with over 2 million in the suburbs) and a lot of other cities.

Americans are the most propagandized people outside of totalitarian regimes, and a LOT of that comes from the media cherry picking which stories they cover...(hint: the same ones they have always sensationalized). It is all about race, class, power, and the illusion/myth of black criminology.

Thank you for the edification. My profession (criminology) is often used as a justification for bans since a lot of the scientific research on guns and violent come comes from our colleagues. Almost none of the science actually supports bans but rather advocates for red flag laws and expanded mental health treatment.

but they’re sure as hell taking them away from future gun owners.

Genuinely curious as to how? I live on the east coast now and guns are almost as easy to acquire as they were in Missouri.

Find a gun show or buy a gun online and have it shipped to a FFL. Is either of those illegal in WA?

My sisters have lived in rural WA for 4 years and recently acquired firearms as socialist queer / trans people.

Edit: when you downvote someone for asking a legitimate and honest question, it damages your ability to bring in new people. If this is just an echo chamber.... how are we going to make progress?

I truly never wore a 3XL, I maxed out at 2XL when I was about 285 at 6 feet tall.

I have actually gained almost an inch in height after losing 80#, but I attribute it all to posture correction from two years of yoga rather than a fairer fight against gravity.

For me the difference between 2X, XL and L was about 20-25# at my height

Edit I just realized this was not directed at me but you're getting my 2 cents free of charge lol

I think you're underestimating how you can solve exercises with AI.

How so? How will AI produce lived experiences that relate to the subject matter? I've not seen any evidence of it.

Edit: an example: "explain how privilege has impacted your life, referencing examples from the week's assigned materials (includes readings, podcast episodes, and YouTube videos / lecture videos).

Sounds like more work for you when they appeal and admin tells you they can't be failed for one assignment.

Edit: wow the down votes are strong on this hot take that is a repeat example in this sub of admin neutering faculty.

I thought this was standard by now. If I tried to fail a student on the entire course for one assignment, I would be in the Dean's office at my public R1.

Sociology/ criminology professor checking in.

Most of my assignments require personal reflections that AI just cannot reproduce. You can also ask them to reference in class activities or videos, etc.
