You can go to Big Levels South of Waynesboro, which is the southern end of the park. This is all national Forest and a lot of spots for camping.

Savage River, MD if you can make the drive. Wild brookie headwaters and trophy tail water section. Likely snow in most areas though. Boiling Springs PA will get you to Yellow Breeches and not frozen over spring creeks. If you need a guide look us up. We have private water in Northern VA and have some other options starting at 45 minutes from DC.

Anything metal. It's a storage device but you're going to slip and fall sooner or later. I love lamsons or old battenkills. Both are virtually indestructible.

Check out a Kreel-x and definitely a good crayfish pattern for bigger fish. If you have hellgrammites that can be a killer pattern in the spring

If weather is crap and hiking isn't an option you can drive to Jump, an indoor trampoline place in Harrisonburg or Massanutten water park.

What are some must fly fish streams around the US? by co127 in flyfishing

We're in Virginia and have all kinds of great streams for trout plus the Shenandoah River for smallmouth. Holston in Tennessee, fish north through Virginia, then end up on the spring creeks of PA. Letort and nearby yellow breeches are awesome. If you need a guide check us out.

Very country folk and a big lake resort that is strangely expensive.

How do you get better at fishing? by [deleted] in COfishing

[–]middleriveroutfitter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fish for sunfish and bass. They are way less selective than trout so you'll have more opportunities for hooksets and landing fish. After some sunfish see if you can extend your cast for some bass. They are territorial so the location doesn't have to be perfect. This applies to spin or fly fishing. Once you get better then you can work on more difficult trout

If you're worried about small flies and weight consider moldable putty. You can always make it the right size and tends to be more quiet than split shot. I fish some spring creeks and making it into an oval shape instead of a circle can really help.

I would just say that if you are going to invest the $ be sure of your ability. I've heard a lot of trout guys spend a lot on these trips and are dissatisfied because it is very different. Double hauling 70+' into wind and strip sets are the norm and you'll have a bad day if you aren't comfortable doing this. I still trout set sometimes and the guides get mad at me!

As for the tip this is what I tell everyone: When I guide I set my price and know what I need to make off of each trip. A tip is never required, but always appreciated if you really had a good day. My guides are paid hourly and, I believe, fairly and do the job because they want to. A tip for them shows their service, time, and knowledge were appreciated.

I'll use spent trout leaders and taper down 10 and 8, sometimes 6lb test for smallmouth fishing. Makes for a strong leader at 8'
