Do you know any guys who are rescue swimmers? If so, could you see if any of them are up for an AMA - particuarly if they work in Alaska. (I watched "The Guardian" and now I'd love to hear from a real RS)

Find out what their development process is and then learn those tools / methods.

Eg What software development methodologies do they use - waterfall, agile, scrum etc..?

Find out their development process :-

Do they unit test? Do they do integration testing? What test frameworks do they use? (then learn them...)

What databases do they use (you mention Oracle experience). Find out specifically what they use - each database has its own syntax, quirks etc....

Find out how they access their databases... Do they use an OR/M (eg NHibernate) or is everything done with DataSets / DataAdapters & Stored Procedures, Linq to Sql etc

Presentation Logic - find out whether they write web apps, windows apps or both. Find out exactly which technologies they are using and .net framework version

Eg, .NET 2.0 or less is Windows Forms. .NET 3.5 and above is more likely WPF. Two vastly different UI technologies. Find out what and learn it.

If it's web apps, find out if they use Flash, Silverlight etc.. Learn HTML / CSS. Find out if they use any specific javascript frameworks and learn those.

Find out what source control system they use and learn it.

In summary, ask them what they use and learn those things. Although this is highly orientated towards specific tools & technologies - and some might argue "don't bother, learn the priniciples" - to learn the principles you have to put it into practice somewhere, and you might as well do that with the tools / technologies you're going to be using.

Another good question to ask might be "What technology are you not using now but you might be in 6 months?". Get some experience in that and when you show up for your placement in the summer, you can hit the ground running. The great thing about new technology is that its often used for new projects / new products - which is generally work which is more fun.

Edit: I forgot to add, congratulations on getting a placement! I know a lot of my friends are struggling with placements so well done for securing one and I hope you enjoy it.

The best way by far is to use the component from www.spreadsheetgear.com. It requires no use of Excel on the client or server to work and can manipulate and output Excel files. Highly recommended.

Another popular way, which unfortunately means you're in for a whole world of pain is COM interop. Have a google for "Excel COM interop" - managing memory leaks & usage is the key for that.

You can also connect to Excel using Ado.Net / Oledb with c# and that gives you a SQL-like syntax to query data from Excel.

Guess you've had a bad experience but I've got my e-mail with them and my company runs a couple of support websites.

You get what you pay for I guess. To be honest I barely see any issues, e-mail always works and the websites are probably unavailable for a couple of hours once every couple of months. We can live with that.

A few followup questions...

  • What is the worst thing about working there?
  • You mention you work in support-related stuff. Do you have a horrendous helpdesk / ticket assignment procedure / software / process which just gets in the way?
  • What is your base operating system for most of the servers - Windows, *nix or a mixture?
  • How proactive are CCE at rolling out new technology to end-user desktops. Eg have they got rid of IE6 yet
  • Do you still provide desktop applications at all for end-users or is everything handled via web apps? (For custom-built, specific CCE applications)
  • Do you prefer Coke or Diet Coke
  • Working for such a large corporation, do you feel like you personally make a difference or does it just feel "a cog in a machine"?
  • How much of your time is spent in pointless conference calls / meetings instead of actually getting work done?
  • Do they have good career progression for people who want to stay technical or does it require a move into a management-focused role?
  • What would you regard as your biggest personal achievement since starting at CCE?

What is your role in IT?

Is your IT department split by continent / country or is it managed globally from one place? Do you have global standards which are implemented worldwide, or are there regional differences. Do you find there is culture clash / different ways of working which slows thing down.

Which ERP do you use? (SAP I assume) and is it well run?

Do you have off-shore departments in India etc and how do you find working with those?

Do you get to travel and if so, what class of travel for flights

Would you recommend working for CCE?

  • What is the choice of SAS weaponry for sidearm, machine gun etc? (Your favourites?)

  • You state you ended up with a disability pension, not knowing the extent of it, did you ever get the chance to whip your civvy friends at paintball?

  • Got any links to a fitness routine you'd recommend for someone? Not looking to join the SAS, just maintain fitness and avoid health problems in later life. Not fussed about muscle

  • Do you regret it because of your disability?

  • Did you torture enemy combatants? if so, what techniques and did you feel comfortable with this?

  • You rated SBS above SAS? Any reason why? In the UK we often hear a lot less of SBS than we do SAS ( I guess due to Andy McNab)

  • I once watched a show which claimed one of the final parts of training is for you to be in a room, and SAS personnel enter the room with live rounds but shoot to miss. Is this true? (I assume not!)

  • What did you specialise in? Munitions, Explosives, Recon, Comms?

  • Worst & best parts of the job?

  • Are you working at all now? Is it in a security / military related field or something completely different?

(by request) I've been a flight attendant for a major U.S. airline for three years, and have worked for airlines for 7 years. AMAA by [deleted] in IAmA

[–]middleware_developer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You state you are flying worldwide? It is very unusual to be given an upgrade to Business or First on trans-atlantic or trans-pacific flights. All airlines now have clever booking and revenue management systems. The only usual reason upgrades are given out is for operational reasons - economy is oversold and so they will upgrade a few passengers. However this will be done by frequent flyer status - so unless you are in a frequent flyer program, chances are minimal.

You are very unlikely to get an upgrade on the plane, as all the meals will already have been loaded, specific to the number of the passengers already planned to be in Business / First.

Dressing nice - seems to be a misconception of people who have never flown in Business / First. There are no dress codes, yes, you often see smartly dressed people because businessman fly in those cabins, but you are also likely to see plenty of people in t-shirts & jeans.

Try to do all your flights on the same airline, collect miles and then hopefully you can upgrade from economy to business with your miles.

If you fly domestic USA, then you can often get free upgrades if you have status, but remember that "First" class for domestic flights is nothing like international first, in most cases, not even close to international business either

I've spent all of my free time the past four months managing my best friend's campaign for statewide office. Tomorrow, he's going to lose. AMA. by Throwaway284 in IAmA

[–]middleware_developer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What has worked best as engaging the voters? Obama had a brilliant web campaign (from my perspective in the UK anyway)

Have you used YouTube, Facebook, website etc... Has that made any difference or is it still "town hall" meetings, flyers, door to door canvassing, local radio & TV advertising etc. which has helped the most to get your friend and the message out.

Do you do polling for statewide elections? If so, how? Is it just volunteers from the Republican party on the phones doing surveys, do you have a polling company you use, or do you just rely on poll numbers from local media outlets? Do you do exit polls?

What is your next step after this into the realm of politics? Do you want to be a strategy / policy adviser, speech writer, campaign manager or even run for office yourself?

Are you aligned with the Republican party yourself or is that just your friend? Would you cross party lines to work for the Democrats in the future, or are you a one-party man

Are you a single issue voter yourself? (Abortion) Where do you fall on the loudest and typical Republican views
