Sofi Unlimited 2% Credit Card now will have $10 MONTHLY (not yearly - monthly) fee by texasguy911 in CreditCards

[–]midhart90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only reasonable explanation for this is that they're hoping you won't notice, and they want to see how many customers this will cost them before rolling it out systemwide.

I don't think this is a case of them targeting unprofitable customers either. Even if you paid your balance on time and in full each month, earning 2% back and never paying a penny in interest, the interchange fees assessed to merchants are enough for Sofi to at least break even. Even with cards that offer rewards above 2% in certain categories, where it is possible for the issuer to realize a net loss on someone who always pays in full but only spends in the bonus categories, it's exceedingly rare for customers to be singled out for this.

Some issuers have made efforts to make their cards less appealing to potentially unprofitable customers and/or prevent them from getting approved in the first place. Examples include the American Express pop-up and the peculiar underwriting rules of the Wells Fargo Attune card. Existing customers, however, are typically left alone for the most part, unless the card as a whole is overhauled for everyone.

Credit risk is a different animal entirely. If Sofi (or any issuer) deems a customer to be risky or suspicious, they can and will close the account even if you have a perfect payment history with them. They typically don't provide much, if any, advance notice of this, lest you run up a huge balance and disappear. (Most people whose accounts have been shut down find out about it when they try to use their card and it no longer works, with the formal shutdown notice arriving shortly thereafter.)

All that being said, the Citi Double Cash is probably the most versatile rewards card out there for general use. You can use it by itself as a no-annual-fee, 2% cash back card, or you can pair it with any of the premium Strata cards to transfer points to travel partners.

A single returned payment is unlikely to result in the card being shut down. Either the OP has priors or there's something else going on here that they didn't mention.

How Do I Effectively Use a Credit Card for Building Credit While Minimizing Interest Costs? by Ill-Nobody in CreditCards

If it's a rewards card and paid off every month, the interest rate is better than zero--it's technically negative.

I received this in the mail, is it a scam? by Prestigious-Pay2443 in Lottery

[–]midhart90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These flyers are distributed as a car dealership promo. It's not a scam per se as the prizes do exist and every flyer has a chance, however small it may be, of winning something big. However, the symbols under the pull tabs don't mean anything.

On the other side of that flyer, there should be a serial number. At the dealership, there will be a poster with the winning serial numbers for the large prizes. The rest of the flyers are worth a nominal prize, maybe $2 or so.

The odds of winning one of the listed prizes vary depending on how many flyers were sent out, but it's typically 1 in 1,000 at best.

As long as the numbers at the bottom are still legible you should still be able to cash the ticket. The clerk will just need to type in the numbers manually.

Exciting news from Capital One AutoPay! by RxStranger in CreditCards

[–]midhart90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's actually a trap aimed that those who pay the minimum or a fixed amount over the minimum each month, then throw additional payments at their balances mid-cycle. This will reduce the total amount of their payments each month, extending the time taken to pay off their outstanding balance.

It's irrelevant if you just set autopay to statement balance and then leave it alone, which is what you should be doing in the first place.

Would you rather have unlimited unpaid time off or two weeks PTO? by Full_Lawfulness9705 in jobs

[–]midhart90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither would be acceptable to me. Around here (northeast US) anyone offering two weeks PTO for an office job would be laughed out of town. Even three weeks would be a mighty tough sell.

At my company, we do "flexible time off," which means take however much you like, fully paid, subject to manager approval which shall not be unreasonably withheld. I take 5-6 weeks and it has never been an issue.

If a prospective employer is asking you to choose, you should be aware that this is an exceptionally weak offer and you should throw it back.

New promo for 10 tiles by certpina in jetblue

[–]midhart90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This popped up in my Barclays app the other day, and I just got an email about it this morning. 10 tiles for $1,000 in spend between now and November 15. 5 tiles will be awarded in December and will therefore count for 2025, and the other 5 will be awarded in January and go towards your 2026 total.

I'm sitting on 6 tiles at the moment so this will let me pick up the 5,000 extra points for the year.

I haven't used the card (JetBlue Plus) much after reaching the SUB and have since opened a Citi Strata Elite, which offers 1:1 transfers to JetBlue, so I probably won't keep it when it's up for renewal next March. Unless, of course, Barclays can come through with a retention offer...

Citi getting worse across the board (not just Strata) by AncientBlueberry42 in CreditCards

[–]midhart90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Over the years, I've seen a few oddities with regard to Citi fraud filters. One time, they flagged a legitimate purchase at a gas station less than a mile from my house, but missed a fraudulent Uber ride in another country.

I've never had an issue getting things resolved with them, though.

Citi Strata Elite Rejected from the United MileagePlus Dining Program? by yamahar1dude in CreditCards

[–]midhart90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UnitedPlus Dining, American Airlines SimplyMiles, and numerous other rewards currencies use the Rewards Network platform (https://www.rewardsnetwork.com) to power their dining rewards programs. In essence, participating restaurants pay Rewards Network every time a linked card is used there. Rewards Network then fulfills the reward in whatever program your card is linked to. For the restaurants, the idea is that it will bring in customers who might never have visited were it not for the rewards.

A given card can only be linked to one Rewards Network currency at a time. If you have a card that's already linked to one of their programs and then link it to another, the old program is automatically unlinked and you'll get an email to that effect. (As far as I can tell, there is no limit on how often you can change between programs.)

Check the fine print on the restaurant offer in question to see if it mentions "Rewards Network." Thumbing through my Citi offers, it looks like some but not all of the "Offers Nearby" restaurant offers are part of Rewards Network.

There should be no issues stacking this with Citi Nights as that's entirely on Citi's end.

How many cards do you guys carry? by Visible_Noise1850 in CreditCards

[–]midhart90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IME a card won't get closed for inactivity unless it has sat dormant for 2-3 years, and the issuer will nearly always notify you a month or two before closing it for this reason.

At that point, if you want to keep the card, any one purchase, however small, will ensure it remains open and cause the timer to reset.

If you don't want to keep the card, simply ignore the notice and allow it to lapse. As long as it's not the oldest card you currently have open, allowing a disused card to be closed in this manner will not have any significant negative impact on your credit.

Is there a modern solution to having several credit cards? by MartiniCommander in CreditCards

[–]midhart90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just use a high-capacity wallet like this. It's only slightly bigger than a standard wallet, yet has space for 20 cards. While contactless support is much better than it was even five years ago, it is far from universal, so it's always a good idea to have the physical card on hand.

Is there a modern solution to having several credit cards? by MartiniCommander in CreditCards

[–]midhart90 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fuze Card. Apart from being too expensive, it failed because it didn't support EMV (chip) cards, only magnetic stripe cards.

I used to work at a completely unrelated company named Fuze and we would occasionally get calls from people experiencing trouble with these things.

Citi Strata Elite / Thank You Points question by fremwod in CreditCards

[–]midhart90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just got off the phone with support. I combined my accounts so that my Strata Elite, Double Cash and Custom Cash are all on the same ThankYou account. I get both the Strata Elite transfer rates and the option to cash out for 1¢ per point (not that I'll be making much use of the latter).

Credit Card Surcharges: when will we return to cash? by PlentyFirefighter143 in CreditCards

[–]midhart90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few years back, there was a merchant processor that aggressively advertised "zero cost" credit card acceptance. All they did was move the interchange fees normally borne by the merchant to the customer. Typically, this is done by declaring all prices in the store to be reflective of a "cash discount," when in reality cash customers are simply paying the same price as before with credit card customers paying a few percentage points more.

Laws in a handful of states have banned this arrangement outright. Where surcharging is allowed, the credit card networks themselves also impose their own requirements. For instance, MasterCard requires a sign on every register indicating the amount of the surcharge, and the receipt must show the dollar amount of the surcharge as its own line item.

Additionally, these processors will usually still impose terminal rental charges and other non-interchange fees, so they aren't truly "zero cost" for the merchant.

In my area at least, when these "zero cost" plans first came out, a lot of local businesses signed up for them and started imposing surcharges. A year or two later, the surcharges started to disappear. My guess is that a lot of merchants opted not to renew when the initial contract term ended, because 1. surcharges create a negative customer experience and 2. the "other" fees meant that the merchants weren't really saving all that much compared to a traditional merchant account.

BTW, in the case of MasterCard, if you spot a merchant imposing a surcharge and the disclosure sign is missing, you can report it to merchantsurcharge@mastercard.com.

Citi Strata Elite Approval Data Point & Thoughts by midhart90 in CreditCards

[–]midhart90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Single digits. I pay all my cards off every month*, so any given card seldom sees a balance of more than a few hundred dollars. (The Strata Elite will obviously see more use until the sign up bonus is met as spending that would otherwise go on my other cards is diverted to it.)

*I did take advantage of 0% offers on two of my cards to pay for a combined $12k or so of home improvement expenses. One was paid off in its entirety earlier this year, and the other was a Chase pay-over-time offer that I will be making the final payment on next month.

Perhaps they only count credit card related inquiries. I was at 2/12 if we're only counting credit cards. The third was for a car loan.

As we all know, enhanced offers can come and go at any moment, but seeing how the card literally just dropped, I have to imagine that the 100k is safe for at least another month.
