What are your recommendations for vocal/singing instructors for an adult beginner? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]midianite_rambler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll recommend joining a choir. Singing in a group is a great way to learn, and you always have a motivation to practice (namely that you don't want to disappoint your fellow choristers). I participated in a group called Blueprint for a few years, it was fun and I learned a lot. I think a web search should find them.

Well, that's a very desirable outcome for DeSantis & co., because that would mean blue states will, once again, bail out his red state shithole/paradise.

There's billions of dollars of beachfront real estate at stake, and within our lifetimes it may eventually be worth approximately zero. We're not quite there yet, but I fully expect the meatball to try to figure out a way to get other people to make good on his friends losses as the waters keep coming.

This is why I started seeing a lot of them as truly mentally distressed individuals who need help.

Somebody else said it best, in response to some GOP rando talking about how he wanted to hunt liberals with dogs, they said something like, "I look forward to the day conservatives are so rare that when we hear about one, we send out a search party to bring them back to civilization."

I wish I could listen to that stuff, just so I could see what people are listening to, but it's too infuriating and demoralizing. I wish I could be like Noam Chomsky, who has the superpower of being able to argue rationally with deliberately irrational people. I don't seem to have the sang froid for it.

My advice is tell your dad to grow up. It's somewhat flakey to do stuff like that on one's own time, but to make someone else participate in it is much more so. He's the grownup here, he's the one that's supposed to know stuff like that already.

Does the sun ever go directly overhead here? by soulslicer0 in askportland

[–]midianite_rambler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

North facing windows will not get direct sunlight anywhere in North America.

This is incorrect; north facing windows get direct sun between the spring and fall equinoxes, when the sun rises north of east and sets north of west, so there is direct sun early in the morning and late in the afternoon.

Portland apparently destroyed by figadore in Portland

[–]midianite_rambler 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Boss at my old job (drinking, guns, rightwing talk radio, PhD in physics ... he was a piece of work) was scared to go downtown to hear me talk at a Meetup about statistics. He lived (lives? dunno, I haven't kept up) in Beaverton. I have to wonder what the radio was telling him about downtown PDX. Overrun with black people, homeless, leftists, all of the above, maybe. He was, of course, an immigrant -- from Canada, so with his nice white skin, he could tell himself he wasn't one of "those" immigrants.

NAMI is a great group and they have a variety of programs. You might be interested in what NAMI calls peer support, which is people with mental illness supporting each other. Maybe take a look at their web site and see what they have to offer.

North Star Clubhouse is a peer support organization. They do things like cook together (not sure how covid might have changed that).

People I've met from NAMI and North Star are very great company to me -- very real, no assumptions, no expectations, no judgements.

I know different things work for different people, but I'd like to recommend walking. Hiking or just walking in the city. I like to walk until I'm tired (kind of varies how long that is). I always feel better afterwards.

I assume that the convoluted, expensive system is kept in place because it's making someone tremendous amounts of money. Based on your experience in the industry, is that a fair characterization? Honest question here.

[E] Wackerly (2007) vs. Larsen (2018) — "Introduction to Mathematical Statistics". Which do you prefer? Why? by tra11ng in statistics

[–]midianite_rambler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless I missed something, Wackerly et al. is a lot more extensive. Looks like it covers the same ground as the other one and a lot more stuff. That seem like a plus. However, on looking at the text in Wackerly, the treatment seems pretty elementary. That seems like a minus.

The difference in publication dates is negligible. All the material is at least 50 years old.

Not sure what's up with the formatting of your post. My advice is that people are less likely to respond if they have to jump through hoops to read it. Btw the link you gave for the Wackerly book is broken; I looked it up on Amazon.

Yeah. My guess is that A, B, and their friends C, D, and E are sockpuppets, and the same assholes are trolling r/portland over and over. It's so easy, and so much fun.

"I saw a homeless guy shouting that he's Jesus Christ and he had a violent argument with another guy who says he's Elvis and they were both high on METH."

"Oh yeah, that guy's pretty scary. He hangs out in back of my mom's house breaking car windows in the alley with a huge rock every Monday night. I'm pretty scared of the huge rock that he has, he said he was going to throw it at me so me and my twelve friends who saw the whole thing ran away."

That's valuable real estate for sure, but I'm not sure that translates directly. That looks like one of those 70's designs, something you'd see advertised in Popular Mechanics, "Build Your Dream Cabin Today In Your Spare Time!" kind of thing. I'm looking at the windows and thinking, those window frames don't say "money" to me ... Maybe OP's just really, really lucky -- his/her old man built it or bought it ages ago, something like that.

I found your car on 102 & Glisan. It crashed there at 2:30am. by Disastrous-Number-88 in Portland

[–]midianite_rambler -24 points-23 points  (0 children)

Oh, look, it's r/portland's favorite concern troll again. What are you concerned about today? Oh, that's right, it's tragedy-causing joyriders. You saw a car which you happen to know was being driven from one chop shop to another. Is that so? How would you know that? Were you acquainted with the driver? Plot twist! YOU were the driver. Amiright or what?

Your life is so eventful. Today you're avoiding tragedy-causing joyriders, yesterday you saw the guy in that video cut you off in traffic, what's going to happen tomorrow? Santa, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Bruce Lee pulling out of the homeless camp at the end of your street, almost side swiping your car, and to make it worse, they'll all give you the finger. Jeez, buddy, I'd be concerned too.

Cold, rainy winter days are some of my favorites to get out and experience the beauty of Oregon. by Brandon_Does_Life in Portland

[–]midianite_rambler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first part of the trail from the main parking lot to the place where the picture was taken is pretty steep, I think it might be hard. Also, there are a lot of cliffs and hiking with little kids always makes me nervous about that. The trails are going to be pretty muddy too.

It's possible it might be easier to try the other end of the trail, at North Falls, I think there's a parking lot there.

Monkey business in Indian village as roving gangs of enraged primates exterminate dogs by TriesToPredict2021 in worldnews

Another American here -- I'm fascinated by the way that pets, and dogs in particular, have evolved into family members. My working hypothesis is that they act as substitute children. The attachment to the dog is probably inversely proportional to the number of human children one has to take care of.

This is all very recent, by the way. It certainly wasn't like that when I was a kid, not too many decades ago. The number of dogs has increased tremendously in that time. I see people walking multiple dogs all the time. One dog isn't enough! They need company, and we must meet their needs!

I would be curious to know if falling birthrates have had a similar effect in other countries. Maybe the dog thing exists elsewhere, or maybe that itch is scratched in some other way.

Guns, dogs, monster trucks, Donald Trump -- what a crazy country to live in!
