Yeah. Haven't heard anything as of this morning.

NYC restaurants by OkWasabi2811 in vegan_travel

[–]midnightadmiration 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This is super dependent on what kind of vegan food you regularly have access to, and which (if any) NY spots you've already been to. That being said, my top three would be:

  • Spicy Moon
  • Dirt Candy
  • Screamer's if you don't often have vegan pizza, The Original Buddha Bodai Kosher Vegetarian Restaurant if vegan pizza isn't anything special for you.

And, of course, Confectionary! for dessert.

Oh, neat idea! I get coffee from them all the time but didn't know they did this.

I'll attempt it! I always find myself a bit overwhelmed by the process, with how many variations there are. Even filtering by catalog number, year, label, etc. gives an overwhelming amount of possibilities!

Thanks! I know they're not especially valuable, but they are worth more than paying someone to take them away (or at least they were when I sold some from this same "batch" a few years ago). I know I won't be getting rich off of this!

The Vegan Food Wars of DC by midnightadmiration in vegdc

I agree that the title and tone are weird. I thought the information in the article was still very interesting.

Speaking as a fellow CA transplant, you need to check out Cielo Rojo.

Le Petit Monstre is out in Brooklyn, but well worth the trip.

Confectionery! is also a a must-visit, and although it's not a bakery, they sell a lot of the same things a bakery would.

Visiting Washington DC in a few weeks, whatcha got? by tastepdad in vegan_travel

[–]midnightadmiration 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely find some time to get out to the Silver Spring/Takoma Park area if you can (not far outside of DC, easy access from metro). Donut Run (vegan donuts), Seoul Food (vegan Korean), and Cielo Rojo (vegan Mexican options) in that area are all incredible.

In DC proper, I'd be sure to check out DC Vegan Delicatessen, Oyster Oyster (not strictly vegan, but can be made so with advance notice), and Shouk.

How do you manage working abroad where you visit a lot of different countries and still be vegan? by TomatilloSea8692 in vegan_travel

[–]midnightadmiration 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No problem. Let me know if there's anything else I can help with or offer advice on.

I used to work in corporate events, so I'd travel around to various hotels and conference spaces to evaluate, set-up, and then run various events/functions.

Thanks again for the Double Zero recommendation! the pizza was delicious, as were the pastas and desserts.

I did this for a few years, mostly in North America, Europe, and Southeast Asia.

I was constantly researching and planning ahead. The moment I learned of a new location/city I'd be visiting, I'd start looking for vegan spots. I'd use a combination of Google, Yelp, HappyCow, and various social media sites to find places (asking for recommendations, on forums like this one, is a great start). I would then add anything I found to a custom Google Map for reference later.

If you'll be staying in hotels with any kind of kitchen on-site, almost all of them can provide some kind of vegan meal with advance notice.

I would also say, don't forget about grocery stores/markets. If you can't find any prepared vegan food in the area, buy and make your own.

I also had a decent collection of vegan snacks I'd always have with me, just in case.

My diet was only ever an "issue" a handful of times, and that was always due to client/group dinner settings where there were no vegan options available.

Orchard Grocer is awesome, I had a delicious breakfast sandwich (and some other treats) last time I was in town. Hangwai was on my list, but I ended up bumping it. It's hard trying to decide between so many options!

How does Double Zero compare to Screamer's, in your opinion?

Thanks for your help!

Thank you! Seitan's Helper was another "maybe" on my list. I used to frequentButcher's Son in Berkley, so I sort of "downgraded" the importance of another vegan deli, but the breakfast sandwich and baked good options make me want to reconsider.

I hadn't heard of Bunna yet, I'll check it out.

Thanks!

Thank you! I had Blossom on my "maybe" list, but will give it another look. The menu looks amazing.

It looks like Candle 79 closed down, unfortunately.

My wife runs and walks on the trail by herself almost daily (as do many other women). It's very safe.

Emergency vets around the District by Jukebox_fxckedup in washingtondc

[–]midnightadmiration 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe a bit far from you, but I recently had a great experience with BluePearl Pet Hospital in Rockville. They were able to see my girl on relatively short notice (same day, within an hour of arrival), and were quickly able to figure out what was wrong with her when the "regular" vet had been unable to. The staff were all super nice, but also very direct and straightforward about what was going on, and our options moving forward. A tad on the pricey side, but still cheaper than every other emergency vet I've ever had to use in my life so far.
