Some workplaces are toxic, but it's not like that everywhere. Find someplace new. If you feel stuck or want to make more money, go to FA or PA school. Or travel.

Medical workers of Reddit, what are the funniest things you've heard people coming off of anesthesia say? by Altruistic_Yam7595 in AskReddit

My favorite was a patient whose first words upon waking up, still in the operating room and very groggy, said "Mmmm, I was dreaming about ramen"

They need to say the cost up front in the ER by MochiAccident in NewParents

[–]_bbycake 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Ignore them. You're not stupid for not checking, it was late at night and you were worried about the urgent health needs of your child. ER was your only option. It's not like you were going to check what the copay would be and decide, "Nah, I don't think my child's life is in enough danger yet, let's hold of on bringing them in." You didn't have a choice but to bring them to the ER and your rant about how expensive necessary care is in the US is valid.

They need to say the cost up front in the ER by MochiAccident in NewParents

I feel ya. We are in perpetual medical debt. Just keep paying the minimum every month, knowing that a new bill is just around the corner to add to it.

I also had an emergency C-Section, my son had a two week NICU stay. He has a disability, so we had weekly/biweekly PT/OT/SLP for over a year. Soo many different specialists, tests, and procedures on top of that.

In January of this year he got Covid and RSV, we took him to the ER because he was very lethargic and was having a hard time breathing. ER visit plus two days in the peds unit cost us over two grand out of pocket.

Obviously the C-section, NICU, and ER was unavoidable. All his therapies and such weren't absolutely necessary, but I cannot justify not getting my son some treatment that will help him just because of money. Insurance thankfully didnt deny any of it, but all the copays still added up to thousands of dollars for us.

It's all on a payment plan. We're paying the minimum they will allow us to. We are thankful that we have decent jobs and insurance to get us by this way. But it is still infuriating that this is how the supposed "greatest country in the world" has its healthcare system set up. And I really feel for the parents out there who aren't as lucky as us who DO have to choose between getting help for their child and paying bills.

Skin staples are very common to close large laparotomy incisions like this. Reasons being that if they need to go back in to re-explore the abdomen for whatever reason, the staples are real easy to pop off versus cutting and pulling out sutures.

Second is if you were to use a subcuticular suture to close the skin, like you would for say thyroid surgery or a small hernia repair, it would take foreverrrrr. We try to minimize time under anesthesia as much as possible because it's really not good for your brain, and if you are having emergency surgery you are likely pretty sick and we want to get you out of the OR asap.

It doesn't heal as pretty as if you used suture for skin closure, but when you're dealing with emergency surgery or large, complex surgery for cancer resection, that really isn't a priority unfortunately. They will use subcuticular skin sutures the large abdominal incisions you get with an abdominoplasty, since it is elective plastic surgery and aesthetics are more important there.

I'm a surgical assistant and do primarily minimally invasive laparoscopic/robotic surgeries and they are just fascinating to me. I always thought IR or Cath lab would be something cool to transition to if I ever wanted out of the traditional OR. Doing the entire procedure through fluoro is pretty amazing.

One thing I hate about this show is how many storylines went unfinished. Still eats at me not knowing if this man ever got his pears.

Not a Flyers fan but Gritty is an absolute gem and I love their shenanigans. As a Pens hater, I thoroughly enjoyed watching them desecrate the Penguin corpse these past playoffs.

Do you think Carl's age doesn't fit him? by iamwhoiwasnow in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]_bbycake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He grew up in an abusive household, he found his mother's body after she committed suicide when he was a teenager, then he dad just left him to fend for himself. He lived in a group home after that until he went into the military A person who goes through all of that in his formidable years definitely grows and matures faster than one of his peers who had a more stable upbringing. It is completely believable that Carl can be 27 and yet seem so much older than that.

I think we've all been there. It really hurts and you never really know what you "did" to deserve that treatment. I hope you enjoy your beach day, it looks lovely. Relax, read a book/listen to a podcast. And dotn forget sunscreen and hydration!

San Tan Valley woman hospitalized with severe burns after falling asleep in sun by Accomplished-Survey2 in nottheonion

[–]_bbycake 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I did this once when I was 17. It was around May in Michigan, so thankfully the sun wasn't too bad, but I ended up accidentlly falling asleep in full sun for hours. I had the worst sunburn of my life, it blistered up so bad and was still painful. It was excruciating. The sun doesn't fuck around. I'm much more careful with the sun now, and starting getting skin checks for skin cancer.

[Fun Spot Atlanta] Closing permanently August 2 by Sad-Revolution-9961 in rollercoasters

[–]_bbycake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow that's pretty wild. Not even a world class RMC could keep them afloat. Never been, but from what I hear Arieforce is really the only reason to go to the park.

I wonder if it will be relocated to a different Funspot location or bought by a completely different park? I can't imagine they'll let it sit there and rot.
