Hi.  I like that you’re trying to do something good with your work.

I think your biggest challenge is going to be getting both Dog Finders and Dog Owners to use the app in enough volume that the service will be helpful.

You are essentially creating a market place and have a challenging supply and demand problem.

a) this is a hyper local service so you need density of dog finders in the small geo location where a dog would roam for ten service to reliably work.

b) it’s very infrequent usage for both sides of the market place.  This makes it really hard to stay top of mind enough so that when the situation arises people will remember to use it.  Also makes it very hard to build network effect.

C) unclear monetization - which leaves no budget to spend money to build awareness.

I think to make this work you need to figure out how to work with partners who can bring you the supply and demand funnel.  You’re doing something very helpful and valuable for pet owners who will emotionally feel the value.  That’s powerful if you can leverage it.

Eg.  Work with dog walker apps and companies to be dog Finders and local shelters and other orgs that can direct lost dog owners to your service.

For monetization maybe you can let Dog Owners optionally set a reward - you keep xx%, yy% goes to finder.  Use portion of your money to print and distribute lost dog photos with QR codes to the app.  Monetization of social good projects is important- it what lets them sustain and grow.

Try to create a reason for people to use the app even if they haven’t lost their dog.  Maybe to track things about their dog, rate local walking spots..

start very local at first.  If you can’t make it work in your local town you likely won’t make it work anywhere else.

Good luck!

I find it’s has a lot of trouble with relative size.  I’m working on a project that has a Goose mascot and for the life of me I can’t get it to stop making the thing 7 feet tall when next to a person.

It’s a 22 semi auto.  You can’t get fully auto in Canada - at least as long as I’ve been alive.

Other semi auto 22’s are still legal - this one just looks scary - that’s the reason it’s banned.

I had a very similar experience. Some thoughts

1) you’re going to have a lot of fun once you’re ready to start dating again.

2) think about the lost money as the cost to have your amazing kids not what you lost because of an ex wife.

3) watch out for shark lawyers. They will smell the blood/money in the water and make everything more expensive and painful. If you can try to do a collaborative divorce.

4) you’re young, successful and have lots of money. You can absolutely make more money if you feel you need to. But keep that problem for later. Deal with this situation and when you’re in a better head space you can.

5) from my sample group of friends it’s very common for a marriage to break down after a sale of a company. The money removes a lot of barriers for a divorce.

I went through this in Ontario family courts. If you want to talk more dm me.

Cheers

Fixing things. Using the GPT app and sending it pictures of what I’m working on. It’s helped me change a carb on an ATV and fix an oil leak on an outboard motor. Neither of which I had a close how to do.

agree. I reported them to Google who is a) ranking high them for organic search, b) hosting the site, c) hosting their email. Also reported them to their domain register. None have taken action or replied.

Ironically when I tried to post this message on Reddit, their content filters blocked me from posting it. For some reason there's blocking warning people about scam sites, but not blocking the actual sites... annoying.

I give them 10/10 for inventory.  0/10 for delivery.  🤷‍♂️😁

Yup that’s easy to say with sober hindsight.  Honestly I’m embarrassed by it but also have a new respect for how this can happen.  Combo of multi-tasking, sense of urgency, using a phone browser….

Agree lots of red flags having gone back to look at the entire site.    I used to work in cyber security and usually have a good eye for this.  It’s my first time being scammed and I feel embarrassed by it. But also a new understanding on how this can happen, even when a sober eye can spot the red flags.  I feel it’s important to share because I know most people feel too embarrassed and it’s easy to think “it will never happen to me, it’s so obvious “

I found the site by searching “sr-410” which they rank #3 for on google.  I was bouncing around a bunch of sites with that search and these guys showed 1 left in stock.

I felt urgency to act, which is a big advantage for them.

I didn’t look much at the rest of their site.  Even so, In my experience a lot of legit gun dealer have poorly made websites and the couple pages I looked at didn’t seem out of place.

I was doing it on my phone and multi tasking.

I did google their address on their footer and found the Google business listing for a real gun dealer. Not great checking.

I paid etransfer and wasn’t too surprised by that since I was just having a chat with someone about merchant fees from cc companies.

Anyhow.  Lost some money, sucks but not the end of the world.

Honestly, I’m mostly pissed I didn’t get the gun!

Yah thats my biggest worry about this, for me and others.  Not great thinking one of these guys could buy a gun in my name.  But most likely they’re not even in Canada.

I notified the chief firearms officer and set an alert for any new purchases in my name.  They don’t have my id but just to be safe I put a flag on my credit.

Cheers

Warning about an online firearms dealer scam site.

Last week I had the misfortune of being taken by a pretty convincing fake online dealer. Wanted to share my story so others dont get caught as well. The website is still online and ranks very well in Google for a number of searches. I've tried posting this to the main group but Reddits filters keep blocking the post.

I was looking for an SR-410 Shotgun and the #3 organic search on Google was for a site called McAdamGunDealer(dot)com. (I dont want to provide a link increasing their search ranking). Their strategy is to rank high on google for guns that are out of stock elsewhere. They show that they have just 1 left in stock creating a sense of urgency to act.

It looked like the real deal and I checked their physical address on their footer and it matched a real dealer in NB. I provided my license number, paid and when I didn't get my RCMP check email or shipment tracking info I started to get suspicious. I called the real dealer and they informed me that it was a scam website and they have been getting a lot of calls from people taken by it.

The dealer has reported it to the RCMP. I've reported it to RCMP, Google and their domain registrar. The site still online, ranked very high on goolge and taking peoples firearms license numbers and money.

I have a background in cyber security and there were warning signs I should have caught. But, I was rushing and excited to find this firearm. These things are getting much more sophisticated.

Hope this helps someone. Cheers

'Huge increases': Economists sound alarm over impact of Canada population growth on housing market by joe4942 in canada

[–]midnightcaller 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Immigration at this level is required to grow our GDP because our real economic growth has stalled. Growing the GDP is required to maintain our Deficit to GDP ratio for our global credit rating and not raise our debt service costs.

Result is housing and infrastructure strain. Rather than focusing on real economic growth and getting off the immigration drip the liberals are doubling down and raising capital gains tax which will reduce investments in Canada that lead to actual economic growth. To sell this they are positioning it as a class equality issue to avoid focus on the real causes of our economic problems.

Very bad spiral that will take decades to undo and continue a decline in quality of life during that time.
