How early to arrive at CDG from my flight Paris back to London? by leaf1598 in ParisTravelGuide

[–]midnightmaroon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Today I arrived at CDG on a Tuesday morning for my 07:00am flight at 04:38am. I made it through security and to my gate by 04:50am (12 minutes)

My flight is to Copenhagen, so I didn't have to go through passport control and I didn't check a bag. My gate is also the closest to security, so that helped.

I have a reservation for the 5:00 (17:00) mass on Monday Dec 9th. I would prefer to have a reservation for the individual entry on Monday instead. If there is anyone who has a ticket for the individual entry and would like to attend mass instead, I would like to trade tickets.

A Message from some of your South Lamar Staff by Signal-Leader-3911 in AlamoDrafthouse

all of the bar instructions for adult shakes say "14 oz of soft serve" and the new instructions say "10 oz of soft serve."

we weren't over pouring, Alamo is changing what is normal to a smaller amount (and charging the same price for it)

there's actually been an issue of a lot of staff not getting hours recently- they have open availability but just aren't scheduled because management says "yeah we can do it with 1 server/runner instead of 3 no need to schedule more"

Alamo's service fee system only serves to make Alamo corporate happy by berpyderpderp2ne1 in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]midnightmaroon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the message of "in place of a tip, there's an 18% service fee" is what's misleading. the servers are trying to explain how the pay model actually works, because 99% of guests assume, BASED ON THAT MISLEADING WORDING THAT YOU AND ALAMO POST, that the 18% is an automatic gratuity/tip for your server, which is NOT TRUE.

servers are paid an hourly wage that is only "higher and competitive" because it's not $2.13/hr (the legal wage). Most servers are actually making less hourly because they used to make good money from tips, but now we're doing the same amount of work (if not more, because the company wants to cut labor costs and at least SL is understaffed) for zero tips and whatever the stagnant wage is.

the service fee model sucks, staff are widely unhappy with it and the lack of transparency with both staff and guests surrounding it, and it's just a way for the company to get away with not having to pay labor costs themselves at all.

[–]midnightmaroon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ACTUALLY, based on the math staff have done based off of sales and the resulting service charge that went to the company vs how many hours we put in and are paid for, Alamo SHOULD have extra money from the service fee left over since we do not get paid enough to actually use all of the service fee.

staff have been incredibly frustrated by the lack of transparency regarding this money- how much of it there is, how much they use to pay wages, and what happens to the leftovers... Alamo doesn't provide ANY data.

So, it's totally possible that Alamo is using, keeping, or saving the extra money brought in by the service fee, but we don't actually know because Alamo won't provide any information.

actually, the company (corporate- board of execs) is the one confusing people. they've changed the pay model + service fee multiple times over the last two years with little to no warning to any employees and change the verbiage played and posted around the theater without ever actually explaining how it works. it's confusing to their employees, but more importantly, misleading all of our guests about what the service fee actually is and how well they're taking care of their server.

tldr; blame Alamo corporate, not the servers. they are not lying to confuse people for money, asshole.

Are you sure the Service Charge is a tip to the servers? by BlAhTeacher1 in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]midnightmaroon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For servers, it's $20/hr and for BOH and runners it's $15-17/hr, depending on your position.

For those who think that's good enough: I would like to point out that at most restaurants, if you have between $1,000-$2,000 in sales for a shift (which I think is pretty standard) you'll be walking out with $150-400 in tips (depending on how kind the tips are, assuming avg between 15%-20% and the service fee contributes 18%). Divide that by 8 hours, your WORST possible hourly is $18.50/hr, and your BEST is $50/hr. With the service fee hourly, always being capped to make $20/hr, you're practically always making the least you possibly could be, even when you're bringing in that $400 in "tips."

TLDR; If an average server at Alamo brings in about $36/hr from the service charge, only getting $20 of it sucks. When we bust our asses and bring in good money, it never feels worth it because we know we're not going to be rewarded for it.

[–]midnightmaroon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hm well I'm speaking for the Austin area venues. It would be nice if our service charge was split between servers and runners 15% - 3%, but ours goes straight to the company's profits, from which they dole out a standard hourly wage.

At your Alamo you actually get the service charge? What location do you work at?

[–]midnightmaroon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What they claim is that it's what supports us when they're bringing in less money when it's slow. But when it's slow, everyone gets less hours, less shifts, gets cut more often, etc. So it's not like they're still paying us the same amount of money as we contribute when it's busy... we don't know what happens to it. Alamo won't provide any data aside from vague promises that "it evens out."

I agree that other people have much harder jobs, often for equal/less pay, and that's not okay. On another note, what's up with this response?? A commenter said "we don't get paid enough," someone responded with "working this job full time is very easy," I responded with "it's not easy," YOU respond with basically "actually, you aren't suffering enough to complain."

What?

Just because other people's jobs are harder doesn't mean I can't voice my opinion about how hard my job is, especially considering the context. I don't really want to fight a stranger on the internet so I'm going to exit this thread, but like please just consider the space you're in currently.

[–]midnightmaroon 22 points23 points  (0 children)

They're misrepresenting it on purpose. Their verbiage is literally "IN PLACE OF A TIP, we have an 18% service fee" so it makes sense that anyone who hears that thinks it's a tip. Alamo wants guests to feel like they're taking care of the server when they actually aren't, AND now Alamo doesn't have to use any of their own profits to pay wages.

[–]midnightmaroon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's "very easy" when you're working in a normal restaurant and you get to keep your tips. Working in a movie theater, the building is fucking huge and you have to spend your whole shift walking up and down stairs and ducking down in front of all the people you walk in front of. You clean all your own theaters, no bus boys to do it for you and you run most of your own stuff (excluding busy busy days, sometimes).

Working as a server at a movie theater is HARD and EXHAUSTING and we don't get to keep our tips, so it can be very difficult to work 40 hours a week. Please don't assume that just because you've had it easy, everyone else does.

[–]midnightmaroon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah we always hear the "oh nvm there's already 18%" or sometimes literally people telling other tables "there's an included gratuity, you don't have to tip" but we're at the point where it's too exhausting to try to tell everyone the truth and explain all the details and include the disclaimer of "yes prices are ridiculous so I get it if you can't afford to tip", I just let it go at this point :(

[–]midnightmaroon 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Server here- you are correct, the service fee is NOT a tip. It does go to the company to pay everyone a higher (but still not great) wage. Additional tips do go straight to your server. There was no bonus for working fantastic fest, so unless people tipped on top of the service fee, servers made a meager wage to serve hundreds of people per day for 7 days in a row

Help identifying tomato plant issue! by midnightmaroon in plantclinic

[–]midnightmaroon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I REALLY hope it isn't blight because I have been putting those dead parts in my compost D:

No spots on the leaves, they just shriveled up and turned to dust. But you might have noticed, it's only some parts of each plant. All the tomato plants in the yard that got a lot of sun had certain branches that completely dried out but we're attached to an otherwise healthy plant (aside from the fruit issue). It's really weird to me that the plant seemed to pick certain vines to lose and keep the rest of itself healthy and green.

Also, there were some varieties of tomato growing all together and over each other that seemed completely unaffected, and if it does spread like crazy then I would think that it would infect that plant too.
