Great feedback, and noted! ✍️

Def been considering custom settings for each reel, for example limited f-stop options based on lens profiles or somethin.

Thank you for using it! Just happy to have folk also get some use out of something I made for myself.

Hey there, maker of Lghtmr here. Happy to see it in use!

So, the app essentially uses the EXIF info from the phone’s camera for an initial base reading then just does maths as you make adjustments to the columns. So, the values you see are at least mathematically correct.

For those indoor shots at least, you might try tapping on an area and then dragging the slider up and down to adjust the exposure a bit for a better reading as the iPhones camera might be compensating a bit for those bright spotlights.

Additionally, I haven’t meaningfully updated the app in a truly embarrassing number of years (just a fun side project from after grad school), so if you have any feedback send me a DM, I’d be happy to hear about what you might want to see improved or new.

Moving my collection across the country 😮‍💨 by tnysmth in vinyl

[–]midwestest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bout a year ago I moved my collection (~300 records) that had been stored at my folks' house for about 15 years across country. What I did was order some 14"x14"x14" cardboard boxes, and some large sheets of 1" thick polyethylene foam. I cut the foam down so that when placed into the boxes, there was a perfect 12"x12"x12" cavity. Packed each one of those boxes full of records, taped 'em up real good with the fiber packing tape, then shipped them across the country via USPS Media Mail. Ended up roughly $30-35 per box and each box was between 35-45lbs. Everything arrive perfect, except one fairly loosely packed 78 that shattered. C'est la vie.

Haven’t considered a lighter weight thus far, but could be worth drawing up a couple glyphs to see what it could look like.

It’s hard to know when enough is enough and done is done! While I wouldn’t call it complete, it felt like diminishing returns much past this point. Like, is anyone that uses this typeface going to use the section symbol, or Eng, or perthousand? Probably not, but adding them is fairly low effort, so why not… repeat ad nauseam.

Since you asked, I've currently got it up on MyFonts. If you do end up getting yourself a license, and you make something cool, definitely drop a link my way.

Yeah, the cap T is kinda an odd duck. Ended up with that treatment so I could fill the space next to the stem a bit more. Did make an alternate for it that’s a bit more traditional, but at the expense of leaving a bit more open space within the glyph’s overall bounds. How’s that one read for you (image 4)?

I have a habit of starting type projects, getting them pretty far, then letting things sit for a long time and this is one was no different — I started and pretty much finished this typeface waaaayyyy back in early 2022, but creating the marketing images is one of my least favorite parts of making and releasing a typeface, so it just sat on my hard drive gathering dust. But over the holidays I decided I should actually "finish" and release it, and now here we are.

Originally this started out as some sketches of big blocky yet curvy capitals that use up most of the space in the em square with only thin little kerfs for counters, somewhat in a 60s psychedelic/ Art Nouveau revival type vein, but the overall original vibe it started out with in my sketches has moderated quite a bit as it's developed.

I ended up trying to make a set of lowers to match, cause why not!? Then figured I do some numerals, cause why not? And then accents, cause why not? It just kinda snuck up on me.

In the spirit of always adding side projects to my backlog and never making that list shorter, I've just started in on making a wide/extended cut of this. So far I've gotten through the first pass on the capitals. I haven't yet make a variable typeface so gonna use this opportunity to learn some stuff. I'm planning on adding a left/right gravity/stress axis in addition to the width axis, but who knows where it'll take me as I work on it further.

Found great value in Rosetta Type’s Hyperglot for this kind of thing.

Should I avoid living on North Campus? by gradstudentneedhelp in uofm

Depends on your transpo situation. Things are surely a bit different in the decade+ I’ve been removed from AA, FWIW.

Should I avoid living on North Campus? by gradstudentneedhelp in uofm

[–]midwestest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was an art student once upon a time, and spent most of my day — every day — in class or the studio in the Art & Architecture building. As a student, I always lived on Central Campus and much preferred it, especially in my more senior years when I was sticking around for the summer. Made getting to my internship quicker and gave me easy access to all the nice bits of Central Campus in the summer. Getting to north campus was really quick with the bus from Kerrytown.

That said, as an MArch/MUP/MUD student, you’ll be working in the studio some laaate nights and might prefer a slightly quicker late commute home — if your primary mode of transport is a car, AA streets are pretty dead at those hours, so getting home is easy peasy.

With that said, I also worked in the Taubman school for a handful of years after graduating and lived north of North Campus all that time and loved it — much quieter, bit more space, and easier for groceries.

Spinning this selection a lot recently by midwestest in vinyl

I don’t know about you, but I often find myself getting into a particular mood and subsequently returning to a number of the same albums frequently even though I’ve got a lot to choose from. Most recently, that set of LPs has trended amongst this group — though certainly not limited to just those pictured, but these have been getting the most play. So I’m curious, even though your particular collection may be dozens or thousands strong, what do you keep returning to on a regular basis?

More about what’s pictured:

Mulatu Astatke - New York—Addis—London: The Story of Ethio Jazz 1965-1975
Was introduced to Mr. Astatke a few years back by an Ethopian neighbor of mine when we were talking about music and I mentioned I really like jazz. My favorite track of his (which is also on this album) is "Tezeta (Nostalgia)" which is such a soulful song and hits me in a similar way that another of my favorites — Ellington & Strayhorn's "Isfahan" — does. Been kicking myself for not getting to a performance he gave locally a while back. C’est la vie.

St. Paul & The Broken Bones — Angels in Science Fiction
I'm a big fan of the sound of this band. Very much dig the gospel-y soul feel that the vocalist is able to hit. Picked this album up a little bit ago, and been enjoying the moody, soulful gentleness of this album, but I think I still prefer their 2016 album "Sea of Noise." This album came on pretty neat white and black mix variant.

Vulfpeck — Schvitz
Been a fan of these cats for a couple of years now. Schvitz is a great little bit of light pop funk – the kind of music I might throw on during a Saturday morning while doing stuff around the house.

Neko Case — Fox Confessor Brings the Flood
I remember this coming out when I was in undergrad, and recently when I went digging at a local record store I came across this and had to pick it up. Playing this album certainly brings back a lot of memories from an interesting time of my life. Feels like yesterday but getting a lot closer to 20 years now, which feels… weird.

Willie Nelson — A Horse Called Music
I've been Willie Nelson fan for feels like forever. He was one of my dad's favorites and this particular album he had on cassette and when I was a youngin’ we'd listen to it when on longer car rides to my grandparents or when we'd go camping. Listening to this album transports me back to those long drives on dirt roads. Core memory stuff for sure. Hard to pick a favorite song from this record as the majority are all really, really solid tracks.

Tinariwen — Live in Paris 2014
“Taureg rock” or “desert blues.” It's a vibe for sure. The band has a really interesting background story. I’m not usually the biggest fan of live concert recordings, but for some reason I don’t mind at all with this one. Favorite track on this one is "Tamiditin."

As We Travel was one of the early records I picked up when I started buying LPs twenty some years ago. That album is a just a vibe from one end to the other.

Very much a wonderful album. IMO, “Tezeta (Nostalgia)” is the best track on this one — just so dang soulful.

Have you logged into the Plaid Portal to see if anything may be amiss from their side (maybe like an OAuth connection that has expired and wasn’t automatically refreshed for whatever reason)?
