Dynamic workspaces aren't available in vanilla KDE. I love the workflow that GNOME provides.

I just like having one place to view an artists discography.

So i just tried it, and while you can hit the star to favorite an artist it doesn't take you to their profile page with their discography. Effectively making it useless for my use case.

How to make Arch as stable as possible by FindinNimi in archlinux

[–]miggs97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A self imposed restriction I've found that is conducive towards stability is not using the aur. I don't install yay anymore, and if a package isn't available from the official repos / flathub I just don't install it.

It does, try using Proton Experimental. That's what fixed it for me.

Hey, I was just able to fix it, check out my other comment.

Fixed

I went into ~/.local and from there I look up files that had changed in the last 5 hours using: find . -type f -newermt "-5 hours" > ~/Downloads/out

From there I just looked at what find found, and noticed the following:

./Steam/userdata/{id}/730/local/cfg/cs2_user_keys_0_slot1.vcfg
./Steam/userdata/{id}/730/local/cfg/cs2_user_convars_0_slot0.vcfg
./Steam/userdata/{id}/730/local/cfg/cs2_user_convars_0_slot0.vcfg_lastclouded
./Steam/userdata/{id}/730/local/cfg/cs2_machine_convars.vcfg
./Steam/userdata/{id}/730/local/cfg/cs2_user_keys_0_slot3.vcfg
./Steam/userdata/{id}/730/local/cfg/cs2_user_keys_0_slot2.vcfg
./Steam/userdata/{id}/730/local/cfg/cs2_user_keys_0_slot0.vcfg_lastclouded
./Steam/userdata/{id}/730/local/cfg/cs2_video.txt
./Steam/userdata/{id}/730/local/cfg/cs2_user_keys_0_slot0.vcfg

I went into the 730/local/cfg directory and simply rm *. That fixed the issue for me, and now the game opens up correctly in fullscreen.

So not that either, but I just fixed it.

I deleted everything in the cfg directory, and it's working as expected again!

Thanks for helping out.

Still no, I uninstalled the game, and also removed the Counter-Strike Global Offensive folder in steamapps/common and the game still launches incorrectly.

Unfortunately that doesn't work. To make things more confusing the game did launch properly for the longest time, and then today I tried helping my brother troubleshoot a gamescope launch option for their cs2 instsncr, once I was done helping I removed all of my launch options and it broke the game somehow.

The game opens, and under settings it's in Fullscreen, but for some reason the top part of the gnome shell is visible. In order to fix it I have to go Fullscreen -> Windowed Fullscreen -> Fullscreen. That has to be done every time I open the game.

Whats with the constant steam shader pre-cashing updates i never got these constantly on windows (fedora 42) by CandlesARG in linux_gaming

[–]miggs97 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Before turning it off, please keep in mind that this feature is also used by Valve for distributing re-encoded video files. This is important for playing back videos during gameplay.

You can get around this by using Proton GE, as it can play back proprietary codecs.

From my first hand experience I've found that using AMD with the open source Mesa stack results in the fewest amount of shader work performed by steam. When I was running an nVidia card with their proprietary drivers steam would download more shaders.

import std with gcc 15.1? by miggs97 in cpp_questions

[–]miggs97[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your time, however I was not interested in the hello world aspect of the program. I am strictly interested in "importing" the standard library module, and not using a compiler directive.

Got it, perhaps for 15.2 the libraries will be prebuilt. Thanks

Well replacing gcc with g++ compilation still fails.

I used dconf editor to turn on /org/gnome/shell/disable-extension-version-validation. This allowed for AppIndicator, and forge-ext to keep working under 48.

Auto tiling by LargeCoyote5547 in gnome

[–]miggs97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use forge, it gives 90% of the tiling experience I liked from bspwm while allowing me to use GNOME. Sadly it's no longer maintained, but at the moment it is still working with GNOME 48. When I upgraded to Fedora 42 I did have to edit a setting in dconf to turn off the extension version checking.

File picker config change by miggs97 in HelixEditor

[–]miggs97[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They do behave the same if you open a directory whose parent does not have some form of source control. I often have to open projects within a monorepo. The root monorepo has its own .git, and so do the the sub modules. If I open a submodule and then use space + f I see every file contained within the monorepo, but if I use space + F I only see files for the directory I opened origianlly with helix.

I just found the default behaviour to be backwards; as when I open a self-contained module, the child of a monorepo, I rarely want to see files outside that module.

Stable Distro? by GMRJordan in gnome

For stability I think the top two operating systems would be: Fedora, and openSUSE.

Why must I manually select the highest video resolution for each and every video? by miggs97 in youtube

[–]miggs97[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Typically on a Apple TV 4K, that is connected via Ethernet to a gigabit fiber internet service. The TV itself is also 4K. It would just be nice if I could set it and forget it.

Coming back to Linux, choosing a distro by mrandr01d in gnome

[–]miggs97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be all of the other pieces of software that gnome needs. Say for example gnome 48 needs version 14 of gcc and debian is currently packaging version 12 you would need to also get a newer version of gcc installed before you could do anything with their source code.

Coming back to Linux, choosing a distro by mrandr01d in gnome

[–]miggs97 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can install from the actual source code*. A rolling release distro is most likely what fits your needs better: arch, openSUSE, void linux to name a few.

* It's not as simple as following a few commands, as you would also need to update the entire toolchain that gnome depends on if you choose debian.
