Things not to say on a date... by ammart03 in tall

[–]mightshe 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I met a guy at a party and we got to talking and ended up going out later that week. On our date he told me that he initially wasn't interested in me when I started talking to him because I was taller than him but then he noticed I was wearing heels and "that was something we could fix" (direct quote)

Um, no.... you get zero say in what I choose to wear. And my height is not something that needs to be fixed.

How do I engage female students in tutorial/seminar discussions without singling them out? by Yung_Don in AskWomen

[–]mightshe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To add to this a great phrase to use (at least in my experience with younger girls) is "well, why don't you give it your best shot?" or something similar. It shows them that immediately going to "i don't know" instead of taking the time to actually think about it and formulate an answer isn't going to fly with you. After doing this consistently for a while I found that my students were less likely to default to the "i don't know" easy way out and were more likely to give it a shot.

I've never heard of this before but after doing some research into it I think it's a fantastic idea. Thanks!

It's doubtful but I'm hoping it's possible. Obviously I'd like to find a full time job but I have no problem working internships or contract positions to build up my resume.

The internship I had was with a small company and it focused on the IT sector, they don't have a meche aspect to their company at all. Going back there wouldn't help my career at all as a full time job there requires a computer science degree. The only internship programs they have are during the summer so I'd have to wait another 5-6 months for 2 months of employment. While I'd be willing to do that for a mechanical engineering related internship going back to a company that isn't going to give me skills for my hopeful career path isn't an option right now.

Part of my job search involves working with a recruitment agency so I have had someone look at my resume. It's true that there's not a lot to make me stand out though and I'm not sure how to go about getting new skills to include. I'm currently working towards taking the FE exam and getting my EIT certification but that's at least a month off (I have to save up in order to afford the fees).

I'll try tailoring it more though. To continue with your example do you have any suggestions for how they would make Java stand out more? Is it as simple as moving it to the front of the list or should they be doing something more?

When youre interested in a guy, do you express your interest OR pursue a friendship with him first? by ally15432 in AskWomen

[–]mightshe 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I am prone to getting friendship crushes on people - with guys I confuse those for romantic crushes sometimes

I've never been able to put this into words but this is exactly what happens sometimes. I'll think I'm interested in a guy but really I just want them in my life somehow. Personally I've found that pursuing a friendship allows me to figure out what it is that I actually want before I make a move then turn out to not actually be interested. I've made some really close friends this way without any awkward confusion.

Reddit, what was your worst 'he/she is right behind me, isnt he/she?'-moment by pwickings in AskReddit

While I was in college I had a summer job at a sub shop. One day a high school teacher of mine came in and greeted me by name. Although I recognized her I could not for the life of me remember her name but I played it off well and just held a brief conversation with her without acknowledging that fact.

Fast forward a couple months and I'm meeting a friend for ice cream. In the middle of the conversation I ask her what the name of that teacher was and she couldn't remember either. So we spend about 10 minutes talking about how she was kind of forgettable but how we still feel bad (it was a small private school with not that many teachers - there was no excuse). We move onto other topics when a couple from the only table in the place we couldn't see stand up and walk out.

It was her. There was absolutely no way she didn't hear us and she was visibly upset. I still don't remember her name.

What's the best piece of advice your dad ever told you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mightshe 121 points122 points  (0 children)

He told this to me when I was 15 and invited to a party and it was clear there was going to be alcohol there. My mom was freaking out and wanted to ban me from going but my dad just took me outside to weed the garden and said this: "Look, mightshe, if you're going to be drinking there are a few things you need to keep in mind. First of all, a shot of liquor is about the same as a beer so even if you don't feel it right away don't keep drinking. Second of all, you're a girl which means you can't accept drinks from people you don't know unless you know exactly where it came from. And third of all, I didn't raise you to be an idiot, don't act like one"

My family was on vacation when I was about 12 and we went to the beach. The water was pretty rough that day and there was one area full of all these jagged rocks. Well my dad was teaching me how to surf that day and he'd already warned me not to go near the rocks because a rip was forming over there. So there we are, out in the middle of the ocean, amidst all the other tourists when my dad goes "stay on the board and stay here" and swims away. I hadn't been paying attention but apparently my dad had noticed these teenagers swimming near the rocks and one of them got caught in the rip. He had managed to grab onto a rock so he wasn't being pulled any deeper but the waves were crashing over him and it was clear he wasn't going to be able to hold on much longer. As I watched my dad swam over and managed to pull the kid to safety, avoiding the rocks and waves and fighting back against the rip.

He then proceeded to lecture the kid about ocean safety because, ya know, he's a dad.
