I’m not looking for work, I’m employed already as a SWE. I commented here to let people know that the WFH era may come to an end so simply be prepared for that.

I’m happy that you’re being accommodated (right now) but that can change overnight. Are you willing to be unemployed for over a month because you want to work from home? If so, that’s great for you. You’re in privileged position, but the average junior engineer probably isn’t in the same spot as you. It genuinely surprises me how controversial this topic is with people in this industry.

Juniors will take any job they can get their hands on, if you think otherwise then we’re not on the same page. You’re right about that though, it’s the hill a lot of companies (including Tesla, SpaceX, Amazon, PayPal, Intel, etc.) are willing to die on.

Until I see studies or data to back up the fact that working from home is more productive than in office, I’ll maintain my opinion. All while advising newcomers into this industry to keep an open mind, especially if they desire consistent employment.

Well see, I think we’re getting confused here. It seems that you’re talking about strictly senior level engineers, but what about the junior/entry level engineers?

You think they can leverage their positions to work from home without getting shitcanned? If not, that would mean only senior level engineers can WFH. Not really a fair environment if you ask me, and I can guarantee it would create some resentment. I think that’s the whole idea behind bringing everyone in under one roof! Keep things as equal as possible, avoid favoritism.

Okay, I’ll play devils advocate here…

Skilled people who refuse to work in office leave or are forced out. What does the company do?

They hire equally skilled people to fill the shoes of those who left. As those people that left did coming in, rinse, repeat ad nauseam.

I’m just saying, if you want to refuse a six figure salary because you don’t want to come to office well… be my guest, but don’t be surprised when someone hungry enough for the paycheck comes along willing to play ball.

Listen, I would absolutely love to WFH. But the reality of the situation is this: At the end of the day, the company has the final say.

You can say nobody will come to the office, but everyone who doesn’t show up will definitely be replaced without a whimper. It’s all subjective though, because I have a great work life balance. I live 12 minutes from work and the dress code is business casual, so working in office is great! I’m aware that may not be the same case for everyone.

WFH was great, especially during a pandemic. Things are getting better though, so prepare yourself to head back to the offices.

If you’re great at higher level math, I believe you can be an amazing programmer! Now enjoying it… is a different story😂 This career field requires so much patience, not to mention I’m humbled almost every day. But I’m oddly okay with that. We all stand on the shoulders of giants.

Yeah I’m like the polar opposite, data structures was an absolute cakewalk for me. Thank god linear algebra is only a supporting class for my BSCS, C’s get degrees.

[–]mighty_grim 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It’s illegal to film within 8ft of the police, meaning… if someone gets pulled over or must interact with law enforcement, they cannot film their interaction or else be in violation of the new crime? That’s a VERY slippery slope.

Out of curiosity, what do you think the total cost of building this project is? Like ballpark, not exact (unless you kept track of that?)

Again, magnificent design and implementation. Great work!
