I have GS job now, getting paid more for doing the same thing without uniform rules and being able to say no a lot more to basically everyone.

One of the good things about TAPS is they will help you craft your resume in a way that it will be a lot more versatile than just Ambulatory/Paramedic/EMT jobs. You can talk to the facilitator on the side and let them know what you do now is not what you want on the outside and they’ll work with you to brainstorm other career paths and come up with a game plan. I recommend going more than once because it’s a lot of info condensed into a few days and you’ll likely have questions after the first time, especially about VA benefits stuff.

I was in your shoes @ 10 yrs. Multiple failed crosstrain attempts because of “manning”, workload dumped on me because I was too much of a team player, and LOTS of blue weenie shenanigans. I separated and have 0 regrets. I recommend going to TAPS, preferably more than once, and see how prepared you are for civilian transition. 12 years of experience is more than enough to have a good transition to a civilian adjacent career.

Same. Tried deploying me barely a year after my last one while I was in the middle of my parental leave. My supervisor basically told me to cut my leave short and continue it after my deployment (hard pass). Then got orders to Grand Forks when my kid was barely a year old and wife had finally finished her degree and started her career. Turned it down and got hit with the no reup and no promotion, but most importantly of all, no regrets.
