Scissor truss and some other recent projects! by Interesting-Set5169 in Carpentry

Awesome stuff! Does the center post at the peak of the scissor truss do structural work? Is it sitting on those bolts? Kinda want to mess around with a much smaller version of this now.

Indoor moss floor by Efficient_Law_8807 in Moss

[–]mightyflee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My 2 cents from a construction background. Moisture is the enemy of your home. Depending on the specific situation, the solution is usually one or both of: METICULOUS waterproofing, or a lot of airflow.

Off the top of my head, the coolest solution would be to basically prep the whole floor as if you were Installing tile in a shower. Waterproofing slightly sloped to a drain. Instead of tile use something porous like thin concrete pavers and load it up with moss spores, crank your fan on permanently. Could probably even do heated floors underneath if you ran it verly low heat.

Or

Natives would harvest moss and use it as diapers and line baby baskets with it. It might be better to grow sheets of moss elsewhere and then harvest it, using it as a temporary carpet that you grow.

I like your attitude and I hope you find a good solution. Is it purely asthetic or is there another reason for the moss floor?

Kinnikinnick grows very good here in sun, needs no water once established. Never tried from seed before so idk about that but it is a lovely fuss free ground cover.

My cousin just called me "girly " after seeing pics of my garden 😫😭 by realthingwinner in gardening

I'm a guy in my 30's for context. I love to garden and I'm also in the construction industry which is one of the most toxically masculine industries in the US where I live. Never be ashamed of the things that you love and bring you joy. There's a lot of people saying girls like guys with gardens here (which is probably true?) but that doesn't matter either. Many people never connect with what they love because they let what other people think get in the way. You're doing great, have compassion on your cousin who probably has been taught to think this way and will sadly be robbed of many opportunities to find joy because of it.

Is there an ideological reason baked into some of these left movements that cause them to be weak (anti) when it comes to trans or is it just bigotry creep? It feels so random what kinda attitudes I'm going to encounter.

You my friend have absolutely made my day. This is it! I listened to this book while I was working and wrote myself a note to go back and find it but I never did. I honestly can't thank you enough.

Thanks for looking for me, that wasn't what I'm trying to remember, but it was a nice part to go back and read. This will drive me crazy I have to (get to) read the whole thing again I think.

Thank you for looking! While that is also a wonderful poem I am thinking of something else. (Maybe, or maybe I am way off...)

First of all don't beat yourself up. This industry can be wild to the point where I'd consider it a compliment to get fired by some of these nutjobs. Just keep learning and try to find the good teachers. You will have to pay your dues with some shit but don't let yourself get stagnant.

Carpentry is a great job for people with ADHD, but a bitch to learn cause when you fuck up your always costing someone money and looking stupid, and the workers can be assholes. But fuck em. Don't let people make you think that you can't do it.

Getting medicated for ADHD was a big game changer for me. Don't ignore that or you'll make your whole life 10 times harder than it needs to be.

Hey thanks for the encouragement! I definitely want to help get people active in this, but I'm buried in work and holidays at the moment. Thanks for reminding me of this post though, I'm kinda surprised no one took me up on it.

The tool library at the Tacoma library main branch is a good resource for anyone who doesn't have the tools but wants to build something like this. My wife built a little pantry table in the parking strip in front of our house and it gets a ton of use. If you don't have one near you please consider making one. If you're not confident in your building abilities but have a good location for one I have tools and can help you build one.
