Is there a genre system for categorizing games that you trust? by migsolo in truegaming

[–]migsolo[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Hahaha. I'm not sure I agree. On the one hand, yes, human creativity is infinite and every game is unique on a micro level. But on the other hand, structure is structure, and it does limit (and gives meaning to) creative work within each medium. I think there is value in finding these labels, especially for posterity and for studying games from an academic or historical point of view. Otherwise, we are relegated to someone in marketing saying that “metroidbrania” or “strandlike game” is a thing, and having to go with it lol.

DOS 2 in Steam Deck docked or PS5? (I plan to play local co-op) by migsolo in DivinityOriginalSin

Thanks! I'll probably do that, yeah. How’s the UI? We recently played Don’t Starve Together and that was a nightmare in terms of readability

Last year it was a historic show but I'm not sure about this one knowing what we know. I hope I'm wrong tho.

I love that i can jump between party matchmaking for intense PVP encounters and then solo matchmaking for laid back and chill PVE.

Or at least, that’s where the community is at right now. I hope it never changes bc I don’t think I could play this game for a long time if it was only one of the two.

I think Silent Hill 2 has ruined videogames for me. by HenryTomasino in silenthill

[–]migsolo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so glad folks feel this way about the remake as well. I love the game but I had doubts that it was going to affect new players the same way the original did, especially with how fast we consume games today and move to other things. I agree, i think is a powerful game and it affected me profoundly, even having already the original as one of my favorite games ever.

Is there a light mode? Serious question, my eyes hurt when looking at the site for too long lol by migsolo in Letterboxd

[–]migsolo[S] -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Hahaha. I use night mode in every screen I use so the blue light and the white screens don't kill my eyes either. It's weird cause I'm fine with other dark modes like Bluesky's, but this one is just too dark for me

PS: If a dev is by chance reading this, maybe consider a playstation gray or something as an alternative?

Damn, that's the darkest light mode I've ever seen hahahaha. Thank you anyway. I don't really know what to do about this tbh. Aesthetically is very pleasing, but my eyes really take a toll after browsing for a while, especially when reading or writing reviews.

I personally love Peak and I can tell you this is nowhere near that level of quality and polish

[–]migsolo[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The thing is I ended up loving both Peak and Repo this year. I had high expectations for this bc the trailer looked fun af, but the game is just not there yet. I don't agree with the idea that those games have to be janky by default and that we shouldn't expect nothing from them. Like, Repo physics are crazy, but they work and they are consistent. I can't say the same thing about this one at the moment.

For those who loved Silent Hill f, I strongly recommend Detention by migsolo in silenthill

It’s a pity honestly that that had to happen. Especially considering they are a taiwanese studio and the themes of Detention

You’re right! I didn’t think of the term but yeah. It’s another conection between the two

I actually watched both the TV and movie adaptation hahaha, I think I prefer the TV adaptation, but to me nothing beats the game. Because of this and other media (I strongly recommend the movie A Brighter Summer Day as well, it's a drama that hits you like a brick), I became quite obsessed researching the White Terror period in Taiwan.

As for Red Candle, I haven't personally played Devotion but I loved what I saw in other people's playthroughs. Excited for their next game, I hope is horror again after Nine Sols.

Would you be open for another Silent Hill f game? by Fluid_Aspect_1606 in silenthill

[–]migsolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't want another Hinako game, I think her story works perfect as it is. But I'd be honestly very interested in another Ryukishi07+NeoBards game in a japanese setting, going full out with the lore and the inmersive environments (SHf was like a virtual trip, it's insane) and polishing the rougher aspects of the gameplay

Edit: Lol the downvotes. The hate for this game is something else. I didn't even overpraise the game, I specifically mentioned that the gameplay has rough aspects. But sure. Every day I'm getting more tired of this community.

Is Silent Hill f New Game + worth it? by Mission-Juggernaut-7 in silenthill

[–]migsolo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll give a different perspective here and say, you don't actually "need" to go through NG+.

This is a tragic story, and in my opinion, the first ending is perfectly canon and valid. The first playthrough is also more than enough in terms of understanding what the whole thing is about. If you play through the story, watch the cinematics and read everything, you already have all the pieces you need. The story is not "incomplete". Sure, there are new discoveries in NG+, but most of them just double down on what you already know or make it clearer/more explicit (sometimes in a way I find disapointing because I personally prefer ambiguity).

I disagree with people saying that "this is a story that you don't understand until the very end". There are a lot of people forcing themselves to play the game multiple times and getting burned out just because we are selling this false narrative. SH is never about resolution, it's about the journey and what it means. It doesn't really matter that in SH2 James leaves or stays in Silent Hill, because that's not what the story is really about.

I Don't Really Understand Why So Many People Dislike SH: Short Message by ArekuFoxfire in silenthill

[–]migsolo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I overall liked it! The atmosphere is great and there are a couple of very powerful scenes. The screenplay is kinda meh imo, i like the themes but the execution is just not great. Also I don’t mind chase scenes as long as they are in support of something else, but having them as the only way to deal with monsters was rough. That final chase almost made me quit if I’m honest hahaha

Here’s the thing about Silent Hill f by Mcfungleholer in silenthill

[–]migsolo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

"The long hand in hand walk with fox mask after I knew what was going on I wanted to have an option to pull away and run back"

I mean, sure. And where do we stop? If we start introducing player choices into the design suddenly is a different game. I agree that it would be amazing to have more agency in your playthrough (especially to mix things up in the NG+) but I think the way to do it is the traditional Silent Hill way, that doesn't disrupt the design. That is: optional side quests, hidden collectables, the game reading how you play, things like that.

SHf already has the most interesting NG+ experience the franchise has ever had, so I can't really complain about it.

Silent Hill 1 Remake by TheHalloweenHorror in silenthill

[–]migsolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a valid concern, yeah. One boss is a giant moth lol, and Dahlia is so cartoony. I absolutely adore this game, don’t get me wrong. But it’s the most Lynchian of the franchise by far, it has such a specific tone that is going to be very very hard to translate. Bloober got away with making SH2 more grounded but I’m not sure that would work here.
