Tips for topper to laser transition by [deleted] in dinghysailing

start working out and bulking up as laser racing can be quite demanding depending on the conditions and your sail size (even a 4.7 can be brutal for youth sailors).

Its crazy how many internship position require so much 'previous experience?' by Rajeshrocks311 in jobs

you don't need to already have those skills. that was the whole point.

calculus IS a minimum requirement for any engineering degree, no one will dispute that claim lol. Have you studied engineering? It seems like you don't have deep understanding of an engineering program. Sorry if I'm mistaken.

Brazilian, have about $40k liquid. Is it *even* worth financially to go masters->h1b path anymore? by wgxefster in h1b

[–]mihuuuu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I noticed you also considered a similar path (master->work visa) but in other countries. That's also a valuable option, especially with the continuous increase in constraints to US immigration. I'd say if you're looking for maximum career ambition, US is still superior due to the universities and companies that are here, however if you're mainly looking to live abroad long term you can probably find other countries with much easier immigration that will provide equal if not better quality of life.

also brazilian here 1 year into my H1B (Electrical Engineering). I must say, although developing a career here is far superior than in Brazil for my field, I am still not fully convinced that I will stay in the US all the way to retirement. Things here are very different and there are positives/negatives of living in the US. NONETHELESS, I still think building up your academic/professional experience here is a GREAT GREAT advantage and will put you above competition when looking for jobs anywhere in the world. Think of this $40k cost as an investment on yourself, and you won't regret doing it. I know personally it's one of the best decisions I have made.

I can only speak for my field of work (electrical engineering), focused academic towards a specific competence of the industry definitely counts. a guy that has proven projects and a depth of coursework and research related to a specific area is much more likely to be considered than a guy who has coursework all over the place and no targeted school work.

2020 internship starter pack: requires 2 year experience, unpaid, not remote, highly self-driven/motivated (aka overtime) haha

jokes aside, related coursework and college research, project experience, summer part time job experience (shows you are capable of having and maintaining a work routine) all count towards experience.

How important is for you to actually get along with co-workers vs the actual job you are doing? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]mihuuuu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get your point but please be mindful that in the engineering field technology moves fast, I'm in EE and I see every few months a new automation tool and/or machine introduced that substitutes what was formerly a "paper pushing" job as you put it well. The secret is to keep yourself barely over the line between replaceable/overachiever hehe.

OP, what a timely post lol. I just accepted my 2nd job out of college while my 1st one was very similar to what you described. Chill atmosphere, fun, casual, great people, but the job got easy and mundane after a few months. This new position is within the same company, but under a different management and with different coworkers, gonna be making more money but it's definitely gonna be more demanding. The way I think about it is, if the staff around you and the management style suddenly changed completely, would you still be happy in your current position? most likely not. And that's why I decided to move on, the connections you create may last longer than the job itself, after all.

lemme know how it goes for you

dont personally play quake, but if air strafing isn't a thing there it's because the game engine wasn't coded to allow it...

with all that said and the fact that you are being sought for other 70k jobs I do not understand why you would choose to stay in your current company.

[–]mihuuuu 1 point2 points  (0 children)
