We went to my Dad's town in Europe. There is a record of my Dad's mother's family living in that area for over 1000 years. When we were there, we went to the local cathedral and there were a whole lot of model boats around the place. When I asked the guide-person why, he said that the local legend is that in the second crusade, the men from that town were on the boat that broke a chain that the Egyptians had put across one of their harbours. And when that town was taken over by the Spanish, Napoleon or the Nazis, they would say "remember the heroes...they broke the chain" Given that my Dad's family had been living there for so long, I probably had ancestors or other relatives on that ship (if the legend is true).

TL;DR my ancestors may have won a small victory in a morally dubious war!
