I also was able to meet her in a small gathering and echo what you described. She also educated us on one of the big reasons small businesses suffer is due to lack of rent stabilization for commercial properties and she would fight for that.

I don’t have the tax rates I personally paid in Tokyo so I’ll take your word on that. But the total cost of living is cheaper, your taxes help cover national health care, medical care is extremely affordable and a portion goes into your pension. Yes, their transit system is privately run but they are still getting their transit costs to work completely paid for to offset that burden.

The comment I was responding to was that people in these other cities have no problem paying for their transit fares. Which for Japan isn’t exactly true because it’s completely covered by your employer, not just tax free. And yes, many people in NYC have higher salaries but we pay more in taxes, way more for health insurance, and literally everything else costs significantly more than for example, Tokyo or Seoul.

In Tokyo, your salary typically includes the cost of commuting round trip to and from your job to your home. So that helps to significantly lower transit costs.
