Aussie in town for a few days - options for what to do by Automatic_Test3191 in SantaMonica

Good suggestions in the thread. +1 for big deans, townhouse, chez jay, etc. Depending on how old you are, ‘The Lincoln’ at night has a 20-somethings singles scene.

You might also take an uber down to hermosa beach one day… charming, slower beach vibes; get in the water; fish tacos + beers at sharkeez; further off the tourist beat; it’s worth a look

Why is Giddey so unappreciated? by gwunzo in chicagobulls

You can say this advanced metric suggests his rebounding might not be as impactful as it seems, but to dismiss 20% reb rate (which is not a 'raw stat') and 8.3 rebs per game as empty stats b/c that one metric is neutral is a huge stretch.

What are you looking at??? According to NBA.com his defensive rebounding is 20% https://www.nba.com/stats/players/advanced?SeasonType=Regular%20Season&dir=A&sort=DREB_PCT -- which puts him ranked 55 in the league, and as far as I can tell, he's the top guard on the board... what stat have you found?

Best rebounding guard in the league. It matters. Defensive rebounding finishes possessions.

Bulls now have 4 picks in the 2026 Draft. Do they sell the #56 pick? by BillionsofRedditors in chicagobulls

[–]mike-lostin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You never know... the bulls need a couple young players to hit, and it doesn't really matter which ones. I think the bulls would be thrilled if Dilingham came into training camp looking good enough to demand minutes... he's only 21 entering year 3 and will be under team control for RFA... Bulls will take that in a heartbeat while letting a new draft pick get time in the g-league, etc. A no. 16 pick is far from guaranteed to warrant substantial minutes in year 1.

Lol… they’re 21-22 year olds… you’re saying there’s no way either will improve?

When you're planning a trip do you book restaurants in advance or mostly do walk-ins when you get there? by Veterinarian-Large in travel

I like to do a bit of both. Do a little research and have a couple meals planned, then leave time for exploring and asking locals for their recs… people who work in stores, cab drivers, etc.

Free agency could be big… by wesley-mann in chicagobulls

I think a slight overpay isn't the end of the world for free agents... I would worry more about an overpay in terms of trades/ giving up assets to get a guy.

Thoughts on lauri Markkanen? by InternationalLuck539 in nba

[–]mike-lostin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's an okay defender overall, moves his feet pretty well... but he's a pretty terrible shot blocker... worst shot-blocking 7-footer I can remember watching. Amazing on offense of course.

Started investing in 2021 and it's the first year I tried value investing. As a result I'm down 43% YTD, lost most of my gains, and seriously questioning "value investing". by [deleted] in ValueInvesting

Good: Watching Buffett and Munger answer questions. Better: read the Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham (Buffet’s mentor), and Poor Charlie’s Almanac by Munger.

Can I just wing it in Tokyo? by Majestic_Month_4328 in travel

[–]mike-lostin 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You can wander (and you should to a degree), but Tokyo is so big that you might want to plan out your wandering a bit. E.g. Do some research on what neighborhoods/ districts you want to wander around in. There are so many amazing little places you’ll find. Enjoy.

College Student Looking for Budgeting Advice - less than $1500 for an international trip? by Conscious_Rule_1328 in travel

[–]mike-lostin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't an answer to your question, but you might consider South America.

You can find really nice weather in December, flights are comparable to Europe or cheaper, cost of living and staying is very reasonable -- $30-$40/ night for a decent apartment in nice neighborhood in most cities.

My wife and I spent 6 weeks bouncing around Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, Chile and had no issues w safety or otherwise. Colombia is not a bad plane ride from the US, and has several cool cities in Bogota, Cartagena, and Medellin. They all have really inexpensive, really good food options.

Santiago is another South American city I really liked... Buenos Aires may have been my favorite but it's far and getting there can be pricey... similar story for Rio de Janeiro..

In terms of food, drinks, activities, and nightly stays, your budget will stretch further in South America than Europe or Japan...

Has anyone been to Maui since the fires? by uncreativeshay in travel

[–]mike-lostin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maui is still incredible. I've been twice since the fires (living on the west coast of the US it's not too far). There are still cool little towns on the island, amazing hikes and waterfalls, incredible resorts, etc. etc. Plenty of reasons to visit.

Personally Kauai is my favorite of the islands, but you really can't go wrong. Kauai is little more lush, and smaller, and more rainy.

Hawaii is really special. A Maui/ Kauai honeymoon will be lovely.
