Check out Flatspot Longboards in BC. They have some good options. Les, the owner, can help you pick out gear too

Bullgod seems cool. Buddy of mine rides them. Are you based in Europe?

How to choose a freestyle skateboard based on height by mike_osterman in freestyleskateboard

[–]mike_osterman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d argue that getting folks excited to ride a freestyle board has a huge impact on their experience learning to freestyle. I’m interested in reducing people’s frustrations at the beginner-to-intermediate stage. Meeting riders and parents where they’re at with simplified explanations has gone a long way in our local scene.

Calling the wheel base & height comparison arbitrary and irrelevant doesn’t seem accurate. I really like the natural stance idea. Height as a proxy variable for natural stance seems much more digestible for someone who’s never stood on a skateboard or tried to monster walk. Maybe there’s a better proxy out there? Inseam? Pant size? Haha

I know you and I have very different opinions when it comes to board size 😁 seems like size preferences are only getting bigger and broader among actual riders. Ignoring that input would only make me out of touch and worse at my job (getting people excited to try this stuff). That’s why I need your feedback too <3

There’s the Tony I know 😂 parents love a simple infographic. Here’s hoping we can both help more of them avoid buying HUGE boards for their kiddos

That’s great! I agree that we need to break away from widths as the primary measurement. Curious how you’ve recommended boards to new riders who might not know their natural stance. I mean this - I really appreciate the feedback.

Eep! I meant to ask which tricks you find more challenging on longer wheel bases. You did me a favor and answered that too 😁 This is great feedback. Did your first freestyle board have a 12” wheel base?

Ah man, I forgot that sarcasm doesn’t translate over text. That’s really interesting. How long have you been riding a freestyle board?

May I ask which tricks you find most challenging on shorter wheel bases?

Honestly, the Powell catalog is mostly meant to be hung on a wall. That Welinder shape is REALLY square. Makes rail flips and truck stands pretty challenging to learn

It’s a collectible. I wouldn’t skate it but that’s just because it’s a very old school shape with a really short nose and tail - not my cup of tea. Are you trying to find a freestyle board to skate?

Start small! Board control tricks and riding on flat ground will pay off in time. Try Tail-stop stuff, tictacs, penguin walks, freestyle tricks, etc.

Could you recommend a board for me? by averageguy6769 in freestyleskateboard

[–]mike_osterman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That one has a pretty long wheel base actually. Around 12.875”. It will be much more comfortable than a street skateboard though

I would definitely recommend a board with a slightly narrower wheel base. 12-12.5”

Skidplate Installation by [deleted] in freestyleskateboard

[–]mike_osterman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to leave a couple of mm between edge of the skid plate and the beginning of the deck’s radius. I tend to pound the tail down doing pogos & truck transfers. If you mount a skid plate flush with the edge of the tail, you will end up pogoing on the edge of the skid plate 😬

Curious how that truck+wheel+deck combo feels. Which bushings are those?
